The 1999 season marked the first time in seven years that the Greyhound men’s cross country squad did not capture the championship at the Middle Atlantic Conference meet. The ‘Hounds six-year reign on top of the MAC ended with a fourth place finish at the race. Moravian completed the season with a 16th place finish of 32 teams at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship.
Senior Tim Pfluger (Slatington/Northern Lehigh HS) was the Greyhounds top runner this season, earning All-MAC honors with a seventh place finish at the MAC Championships in a time of 27:31.94. Pfluger also earned All-Mideast Region accolades with a 35th place showing at the regional meet in a time of 27:12.40. Pfluger won two races this past fall, finishing first at the Muhlenberg Invitational and the Reif Memorial Run at Cornell University.
Junior Damon Rutherford (Reading/Exeter HS) was Moravian’s number two runner this season with a season best finish of sixth place at Muhlenberg and a season best time of 27:29.90 to finish 50th at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Freshman George Wacker (Honesdale/Honesdale HS) had an impressive showing for the Greyhounds in his debut season. Wacker earned Freshman All-Mideast Region accolades as one of the top 35 freshman in the race. He placed 75th overall in a season best time of 27:56.00.
Rounding out Moravian’s top seven runners this fall were sophomores Tim McDade (Bechtelsville/Boyertown HS) and Chris DeWalt (Easton/Easton HS), senior Michael Keysock (Bethlehem/Freedom HS) and freshman Justin Arnold (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge HS). McDade was 27th at the MAC Championships and 137th at the NCAA Mideast Regional. He ran a season best 28:41. 89 at the Dickinson College Invitational while DeWalt also had his best outing of the year at Dickinson in a time of 29:20.38. DeWalt was 56th at the MAC race at 190th at the NCAA meet.
Keysock, who ran for his first time with the Greyhounds this season, was 58th at the MAC race and 167th in the regional meet. Keysock ran a season best 29:50.39 at the Allentown College Invitational. Arnold, who did not run much at the beginning of the season, placed 77th at the MAC Championships and 157th at the NCAA meet with a season best time of 29:43.40.
Pfluger and Rutherford each earned spots on the MAC Academic Honor Roll this past fall.
