The Moravian College field hockey team saw its 2009 season come to a close with a 2-0 loss to The Catholic University of America Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference action at Betty Prince Field.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute when junior midfielder/defender Andrea Baick scored an unassisted goal, her second goal of the season. Catholic extended its lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute when junior forward Meredith Chandler netted an unassisted goal, her team leading 11th goal of the year.
Catholic had a 10-1 edge in shots and a 16-5 advantage in penalty corners. Moravian senior goalie Aliina Ross, pictured, had three saves while Greyhound freshman defender Stephanie Pezzello had two defensive saves for Moravian. Catholic senior goalie Marian Cassilly had one save on Moravian’s only shot by senior forward Jillian Pagliei.

The Moravian College field hockey team dropped its second straight overtime match, falling to Susquehanna University, 2-1 in overtime, in Landmark Conference action at Betty Prince Field Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute on a ten-yard shot from sophomore forward Anna Spisak for her fourth goal of the season off of a pass from freshman midfielder Ally Bradley. The Greyhounds tallied to tie the match in the 61st minute when senior midfielder Julie Bisci, pictured, knocked in her fifth goal of the season off of a pass from junior midfielder Maureen Helfers.
Susquehanna would win the match 2:19 into overtime when Bradley lifted a shot from near the edge of the circle into the top of the net for her sixth goal of the year.
The Crusaders had a 9-7 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. Moravian junior goalie Maura Acox had six saves while sophomore goalie Erin Ferguson had three stops for Susquehanna. Julia Amendola added a defensive save for the Crusaders.

The Moravian College field hockey team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime, and the Greyhounds appeared to have the match won before falling to Gwynedd-Mercy College, 3-2 in overtime, at Betty Prince Field Wednesday afternoon as Moravian had its three-match winning streak snapped.
The Griffins took a 1-0 lead just nine minutes into the match when sophomore forward Kerri Boon scored her fourth goal of the season off of a rebound after a save. The Griffins extended their lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when sophomore forward Dottie O’Neil punt in a crossing pass from Boon.
Moravian responded 1:22 later when senior forward Kayla Carson, pictured, tapped in a loose ball in front of the cage for her eighth goal of the season to cut the Gwynedd-Mercy lead to 2-1. The score remained that way until Carson scored in the 63rd minute off of a pass from senior midfielder Samantha Bell. The goal was Carson’s ninth of the season and gave her 25 career goals, now sixth in school history and Carson moved into fifth all-time at Moravian with 61 points.
The Greyhounds dominated the early portion of the overtime and appeared to win the match in the 77th minute when junior forward Vita Ranella scored from the top of the circle. After initially allowing the goals, the referees had a conference and ruled that a Moravian player had interfered with Griffin freshman goalie Kate Eschbach and disallowed the goal. Three minutes later, after Moravian’s 11th penalty corner of the match, Gwynedd-Mercy took control of the ball with O’Neil breaking down the field. O’Neil would cross the ball to sophomore forward Kayla Farrow, who scored the game-winner for her fifth goal of the season.
Moravian had a 22-16 advantage in shots and an 11-3 edge in penalty corners. Greyhound junior goalie Maura Acox had six saves while freshman defender Stephanie Pezzello had a defensive save for Moravian. Eschbach had 12 saves for the Griffins, and freshman midfielder/defender Erin Gorenflo had a pair of defensive saves for Gwynedd-Mercy.

Junior midfielder Maureen Helfers, pictured, scored her first goal of the season to lead the Moravian College field hockey team to a 1-0 Landmark Conference victory over Goucher College Saturday afternoon.
The victory was the third straight for the Greyhounds, who improved to 2-2 in Landmark Conference action. Helfers scored an unassisted goal in the 21st minute.
Goucher had a 9-5 edge in shots and a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners. Moravian junior goalie Maura Acox had two saves for her fourth shutout of the season. The victory was also Acox’s 20th career win, making her the third goalie in school history to win 20 matches. Micki Manheimer added three saves for the Gophers.

Senior forward Kayla Carson connected on a penalty stroke with 7:46 remaining in the match to lift the Moravian College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action Wednesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior forward Vita Ranella, pictured, hit in a crossing pass from junior midfielder Maureen Helfers just 1:28 into the contest.
The Royals tied the match in the 47th minute when senior forward Elizabeth Carugan tapped in a crossing pass for her fourth goal of the season from freshman forward Gretchen Kempf after Scranton nearly went the length of the field on a fast break.
Carson netted her seventh goal of the season and fourth of the week on the penalty stroke in the 63rd minute. Moravian was awarded the stroke when Greyhound senior forward Jillian Pagliei was taken down by Scranton senior goalie Deirdre Rocklein as Pagliei tried to get to a loose ball just in front of an empty net. The goal moved Carson into a tie for seventh in career goals with 23 and career points with 57.
Moravian had a 15-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in the first half, while Scranton had a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners with a 10-3 edge in the second half. Moravian junior goalie Maura Acox posted four saves in the victory while Rocklein had six saves. Moravian senior defender Stephanie Dellaquilla had a defensive save for the Greyhounds.

Senior forward Kayla Carson, pictured, netted her first career hat trick to lead the Moravian College field hockey team to a 4-2 non-conference victory over Washington (MD) College Monday afternoon at Betty Prince Field.
The victory snapped the Greyhounds’ four-match losing streak, and the teams combined to score the six goals in a span of 15 minutes during the second half.
After a scoreless first 35 minutes, Carson opened the scoring in the 39th minute when she put a ball over top of Shorewomen goalie Elena Nicholoff after a save on a Moravian penalty corner. Washington tied the match five minutes later when senior attack Kristin Bircsak took a one-time shot off of a pass from freshman midfielder Kristen Wille on a Shorewomen penalty corner.
The Greyhounds retook the lead in the 47th minute when senior midfielder Julie Bisci tapped in a one-time pass from junior forward Vita Ranella on a Moravian penalty corner. Junior midfielder Maureen Helfers took the pass to start the corner and sent it to the top of the circle to Ranella, who fired the ball to Bisci on the far post.
Moravian would push the lead to 4-1 on Carson’s other two goals. Carson scored in the 51st minute on a shot down the goal line from the right side that eluded Nicholoff and rolled into the goal. Just 1:28 later, Carson would put in a crossing pass from junior midfielder Maureen Helfers for her sixth goal of the season. The hat trick by Carson moved her into eighth all-time at Moravian with 22 career goals, and she ninth with 11 career assists and tied for ninth in career points with 55.
Washington needed just 1:26 to cut Moravian’s lead down to two goals when senior attack Kelsey Kemp scored her eighth goal of the season.
Moravian finished the game with a 14-7 advantage in shots while the Shorewomen had a 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Nicholoff had a match high six saves for Washington in 56 minutes of action while junior goalie Shannon Davis played the final 14 minutes with one save. Junior goalie Maura Acox had four saves for the Greyhounds.

The Moravian College field hockey team suffered a 5-0 loss at Juniata College in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Juniata’s Kim Amrod scored three goals to lead the Eagles. Juniata opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Sam Smith scored off of a pass from Meghan McGlone. Amrod netted her first goal in the 21st minute while Paula Price had an unassisted goal in the 47th minute. Amrod would score off of a Price pass in the 54th minute and finish the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 68th minute.
Juniata had a 22-8 advantage in shots while Moravian had a 10-8 edge in penalty corners. Moravian junior goalie Maura Acox, pictured, made eight saves. Denalyn Spratt started in goal for Juniata and had three saves in 54 minutes of action while Moira Nugent had two saves in 16 minutes. McGlone had a pair of defensive saves for the Eagles while Caitlyn Bowman had one defensive save.

The Moravian College field hockey team suffered a 1-0 non-conference loss to FDU-Florham at Betty Prince Field Monday afternoon.
The Devils would score the only goal of the match in the 29th minute when sophomore forward Lauren Guenther netted her first goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Victoria Nedo took a shot from inside the top of the circle on a penalty corner, but the shot was blocked and ended up on Guenther’s stick for a goal from five yards out on the left side.
The Greyhounds had a 10-7 advantage in shots including 6-1 in the second half, and Moravian also had a 10-7 edge in penalty corners but for the second time this season, the Greyhounds were shutout despite out-shooting their opponent. The Moravian College field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision at Drew University to begin the 2009 Landmark Conference season in Madison Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Meghan Howlett scored on a pass from Nicole DiBattista. Just a minute later, Elizabeth Law scored on an assist from Howlett. Drew pushed its lead to 3-0 in the 18th minute when Christine Beckhussen found the back of the cage with an unassisted goal.
Moravian opened the second half by cutting the Drew lead to 3-1 on an unassisted tally by junior forward Vita Ranella in the 42nd minute. The goal was Ranella’s first of the season. Drew would add another goal in the 52nd minute when Sarah Charles scored off of a pass from DiBattista.
The Rangers had a 21-4 advantage in shots and a 12-1 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalie Maura Acox had eight saves while senior defender Stephanie Dellaquilla, pictured, had a defensive save. Goalie Stef Rutkowski had two saves for the Rangers.

The Moravian College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 non-conference decision to rival Muhlenberg College at Betty Prince Field Wednesday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Tara Cohn scored both goals for the Mules with an unassisted tally in each half. Cohn opened the scoring with a drive in from the right side, beating Moravian junior goalie Maura Acox, pictured, to the left corner of the cage in the eighth minute. Cohn scored again in the 53rd minute with a blast from the top of the circle after her initial attempt was blocked on a penalty corner.
The Mules had a 15-12 advantage in shots although it was a tale of two halves with Muhlenberg holding a 9-1 edge in the first half and Moravian out-shooting the Mules, 11-6, in the final 35 minutes. Muhlenberg also had a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. Mule freshman goalie Kristen Dorenburg had six saves, and Muhlenberg also received defensive saves from freshman midfielder Tiffany Kreider and sophomore defender Cait Teegarden. Acox finished with eight saves for the Greyhounds.

Senior midfielder Julie Bisci, pictured, blasted in a rebound of her previous shot into an open goal 5:02 into overtime to give the Moravian College field hockey team a 1-0 non-conference victory over Arcadia University at Betty Prince Field Tuesday afternoon.
Bisci’s goal, her third of the season, came on her fourth shot of the match and was a follow-up shot to a save by Arcadia senior goalie Brittany Rausmussen just seconds before. Bisci was one of four Greyhounds to take four shots in the game including senior forward Jillian Pagliei and juniors midfielder Maureen Helfers and forward Vita Ranella as Moravian dominated shots, 21-6.
The match was actually a tale of two halves with the Greyhounds dominating the first half with a 14-2 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge on penalty corners. In the second half, the Knights controlled the ball and had a 4-2 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners. Overtime proved to be all Moravian as the Greyhounds had a 5-0 edge in shots and a 2-0 edge in penalty corners in the five minutes played.
Moravian junior goalie Maura Acox made five saves for her second shutout of the season, and the fifth of her career. It also marked the first time Acox had a shutout that didn’t finish in a 2-0 score. Rausmussen made 15 saves for Arcadia.

Acox’s shutout was the fourth of her career at Moravian, all by 2-0 scores, and the second time she has shutout Immaculata.
The Greyhounds would get all the offense that Acox would need in the 13th minute when senior forward Jillian Pagliei netted her first goal of the season off of a pass from senior forward Kayla Carson. Senior midfielder Julie Bisci would score her second goal of the season with just five minutes remaining in the match off of a pass from Pagliei.
Moravian had an 11-7 edge in shots and an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners in the victory. Mighty Macs goalkeeper Britt Worthington started and had two saves in 40 minutes of action while goalie Jess Jones had two saves in the final 30 minutes.

The Colonels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on a goal by Jennifer Keegan off of a pass from Amanda Peters. Wilkes would take a 2-0 lead on a goal from Trisha Kapes with Peters setting up the goal again in the 41st minute.
Moravian would get on the scoreboard in the 44th minute when junior forward Becky Renaldo put a loose ball in the back of the cage. Keegan would score again in the 47th minute on a pass from outside the circle from Kim Baldino. Jenna DiSabatino finished the scoring in the 57th minute with an unassisted goal.
Wilkes finished the match with a 19-6 advantage in shots while Moravian had a 6-5 edge in penalty corners. Freshman Kirsten Gehm started in goal for the Greyhounds and made five saves in 45 minutes of action while junior Maura Acox had four saves in 25 minutes. Freshman defender Stephanie Pezzello also had a defensive save for the Greyhounds. Lindsey Davenport made three saves in 65 minutes of action while Caitlin Jordon didn’t make a save in the final five minutes.

The Moravian College field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Marywood University, 2-0, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon on Marywood’s new synthetic turf field.
The Greyhounds started the match strong in thefirst half, out-shooting the host Pacers 6-3 in the opening 35-minutes, but could not find the back of the net as Marywood freshman goalie Jamie Bowman made four stops. Pacer junior defender Maggie Brittain made a defensive save as well; stopping a shot by Moravian junior forward Vita Ranella before it crossed the line.
Marywood started the second half strong on the offensive end, scoring just over 11-minutes in. Junior midfielder Brittany Beaton capitalized on a scramble in front of the Greyhound net and put home a loose ball for her first goal of the season. Brittain then followed with her goal just over four minutes later as she scored in nearly the same fashion at the 50:22 mark.
The Greyhounds had several scoring chances in the final 19 minutes but could not put a shot on net despite six second half penalty corners. For the game, Moravian out-shot the Pacers by a 9-5 margin and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners. Greyhound junior goalie Aliina Ross had one save while Bowman finished with four saves.

Senior forward Kayla Carson netted a pair of first half goals to lead the Moravian College field hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference win over DeSales University to begin the 2009 season Tuesday afternoon at Betty Prince Field.
Carson needed just 1:57 to get the Greyhounds on the scoreboard as she hit home a pass from senior midfielder Julie Bisci on a penalty corner to give Moravian a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs tied the match in the 26th minute as junior forward Jamie Matthews lifted in a pass from freshman midfielder Alyssa Knappenberger. Carson would find the back of the cage again with just 58 seconds remaining in the first half as she tipped in a crossing pass from junior midfielder Maureen Helfers .
Moravian scored the only goal of the second half when Bisci netted her first goal of the season with a put back after a save in the 45th minute. The Greyhounds had a 9-5 advantage in shots and a 10-9 edge in penalty corners.
Junior goalie Maura Acox had three saves in goal for the Greyhounds while freshman keeper Victoria DelToro had four saves for the Bulldogs.
