2009 Review

Under the direction of seventh year head coach Amy Endler, the 2009 Moravian College field hockey team posted a 7-11 record this fall.  The Greyhounds were 2-4 in the third year of the Landmark Conference and suffered a total of seven losses by two or less goals, with two of those games ending in overtime.

Leading the Greyhounds was senior forward Kayla Carson (Leesport, PA/Wyomissing HS) with nine goals and an assist for a total of 19 points. Carson finished her career with 25 goals, which is sixth in school history, 11 assists, ninth all-time, and 61 points, fifth in the Moravian record books.

Senior midfielder Julie Bisci (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg HS), pictured right, added five goals and an assist for 11 points while junior forward Maureen Helfers (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke HS) put one goal in the back of the cage to go along with five assists for a total of seven points.

Junior forward Vita Ranella (Clarks Green, PA/Abington Heights HS) contributed two goals and an assist for five points while senior forward Jillian Pagliel (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock North HS) added a goal and an assist for three points. Junior forward Becky Ronaldo (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) also added a goal and an assist for three points total this season for the Greyhounds while senior midfielder Samantha Bell (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) contributed one assist.

Freshman defender Stephanie Pezzello (Holmdel, NJ/St. John Vianney HS) had five defensive saves this year while senior defender Stephanie Dellaquilla (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford HS) had three defensive saves. Also contributing a defensive save this year for the Greyhounds was junior defender Alexandra Lopez (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS).

Junior goalie Maura Acox (Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vianney) played 1,092 minutes in goal while earning a goals-against average of 1.73 with 71 saves, four shutouts, and a 7-8 mark on the season. Senior goalie Aliina Ross (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) saw 140 minutes of action to go along with a 2.0 goals-against average and two saves while freshman goalie Kirsten Gehm (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) had 44 minutes in goal, a 3.13 goals-against average, and five saves.

Also contributing for the Greyhounds this season were seniors midfielder Damara Varney (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS), who is pictured left, and defender Patty Eck (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS), junior defender Lizzette Arias (Arlington, VA/Wakefield HS), sophomores forward Rolyn Santiago (Allentown,PA/Dieruff HS) and midfielder Erica Cernobyl (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS), and freshmen forwards Briana VanBuskirk (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg HS) and Elise Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan HS).

Bell, Bisci, Dellaquilla, Eck, Ross, Varney, Acox, Arias, Lopez and Renaldo were all named to the 2009 Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.
