2000 Review

The 2000 edition of the Moravian College field hockey team showed a lot of heart and pride during the season as the 13-member squad posted a 5-14 record, two more wins than the 1999 campaign produced.  The Greyhounds opened the fall season with three wins in four contests, including an overtime win over Haverford College.

Junior forward Elissa Gerstel (Warminster/William Tennent HS) started the season on a scoring hot streak as she tallied seven of Moravian’s first 11 goals of the year.  Gerstel, who was named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team, finished the season with 11 goals and one assist for 23 points.  She scored four game-winning goals for the Greyhounds and five ties during the season; Gerstel was the only Moravian player to score in a match including two of the team’s victories.

Junior forward Suzy Wargo (Somerville, NJ/Hillsborough HS) was also named to the Commonwealth Conference All-Star Second Team this fall after scoring four goals for eight points.

Senior forward Brooke Dancho (Bethlehem/Freedom HS) was second on the team in scoring this season with ten points on two goals and six assists.  Dancho completed her Moravian career with 33 points on ten goals and 13 assists.  Senior forward Chelsea Roberts (Philadelphia/St. Basil Academy), who was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll this season, tallied two goals and two assists for six points.  Roberts had ten goals and four assists for 24 points in her career.

Freshman forward Rachel Crocker (Bethlehem/Northampton HS) scored one goal and one assist for the Greyhounds in her debut season while freshman midfielder Kate Hunter (Stillwater, NJ/Pope John XXIII) had one assist in 11 matches before an ACL injury sidelined her for the rest of the season.

Also in the midfield for the Greyhounds this season were senior Kelly Pico (Lincoln Park, NJ/Boonton HS) and juniors Andrea Rafferty (Hellertown/Saucon Valley HS) and Leslie Siebler (Easton/Wilson HS).

Leading Moravian on defense this fall were senior captain Melissa Garrison (Phillipsburg, NJ/Belvidere HS), junior Nicole Solley (Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh HS) and freshman Rachel Martz (Pottstown/Pottstown HS).

Junior transfer goalie Kristie Cupples (Allentown/Salisbury HS) started 16 matches in goal this season and played 927 minutes.  She had a 3.02 goals against average and 123 saves.  Cupples combined with sophomore Mary Peterson (Winston-Salem, NC/Salem Academy) for a shutout of Bryn Mawr College this season.  Peterson started three matches this fall and had a solo shutout of King’s College to closeout the 2000 season.  She posted a 1.86 goals against average and 26 saves in 413 minutes of action.

The Greyhounds will return a strong nucleus of nine players next fall and look to continue the improve that started this season.
