Vs. Muhlenberg College Lost 45-20
Freshman running back Matt Bernardo ran for a career high 251 yards on 40 carries and tied a Muhlenberg College record with four touchdowns in the Mules 45-20 victory over Moravian College in the annual rivalry game Saturday.
Muhlenberg moves to 8-2 on the season and now awaits a possible berth in the ECAC Playoffs while the Greyhounds finish the 2000 season at 6-4, a large improvement over the 2-8 campaign of 1999.
Bernardo helped the Mules get on the board early with a nine-yard touchdown run with 10:01 left in the first quarter. Senior Michael Dickinson made the extra-point, one of six conversions in the game, to give Muhlenberg a 7-0 lead. The Mules would extend the lead to 14-0 with 15 seconds left in the first stanza on a 41-yard pass from senior quarterback Michael McCabe to junior wide receiver Joshua Carter. McCabe completed 11 of 24 passes in the game for 159 yards but he was intercepted three times.
Moravian would cut the lead to 14-6 early in the second quarter when sophomore wide receiver Josh Fick took a handoff and ran three yards for a touchdown. The extra-point failed and Moravian trailed 14-6 with 12:21 left in the first half.
Bernardo, who won the Bianco Award in the game as Muhlenberg 's MVP, scored his second touchdown of the first half with 5:41 to play in the second quarter on a one yard run.
Moravian would score on its next drive on a 14 yard pass from sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden to sophomore wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart but the two-point conversion failed to set the score at 21-12. Bowden, Moravian 's MVP in the game, completed 16 of 32 passes for 250 yards to give him 2,237 on the year, the third best single season in Moravian history. However, Bowden was intercepted twice in the game.
Muhlenberg would need exactly 13 seconds to pad its lead as Carter received the kickoff at the ten yard line and ran up the middle of the field 90 yards for a touchdown. The score gave the Mules a 28-12 halftime lead.
The Greyhounds would be the only team to score in the third quarter as freshman tailback Tim Barlok scampered up the middle 36 yards for the touchdown. A Bowden pass to Rhinehart for two points put Moravian down by eight points, 28-20 with 4:02 left in the third quarter. Barlok led the Moravian ground game with 75 yards on 12 carries.
Muhlenberg would finish out the scoring in the fourth quarter with 17 points. Bernardo scored on touchdown runs of two and one yards while Dickinson capped the scoring with a 28-yard field goal with 3:49 to play. Bernardo came out of the game, 12 yards shy of the Muhlenberg single game rushing record.
Senior cornerback Mike Burke led the Muhlenberg defense with 11 tackles, one for loss, and two interceptions while senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart paced the Greyhounds with 13 tackles, one interception and two pass break-ups.
At Wilkes University Won 28-21
Freshman tailback Tim Barlok scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 1:11 left in the game to give the Moravian College football team a 28-21 Middle Atlantic Conference victory over Wilkes University Saturday.
The Greyhounds, who trailed 14-0 after the first quarter and committed seven turnovers in the game (three interceptions and four fumbles), improve to 6-3 on the season and clinch the squad 's first winning season since 1997 while the Colonels fall to 5-4. The win was Moravian 's second straight over Wilkes after a 28-22 overtime victory in 1999.
Wilkes, which was fourth in the nation in total defense at 202 yards per game, allowed the Greyhounds 102 yards in the game and 342 yards in total offense, 140 yard more that the Colonel defense season average. The Greyhounds held Wilkes to 41 yards on the ground and 303 yards overall.
The Colonels took a 7-0 lead in with 9:56 to play in the first quarter on a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeff Marshman wide receiver Brian Miller and the extra-point by Ian Silverman. The Wilkes drive was set up by a 20-yard interception return by defensive back Justin Holmes.
Wilkes would extend its lead to 14-0 with 8:25 left in the first stanza on a 19-yard pass from Marshman to tight end Frank McCabe. The Colonels got possession after fumble by Moravian senior fullback P.J. Jankowicz.
Moravian would get on the scoreboard on an 18-play, 84-yard drive that took over half of the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 3:15 left in the second quarter. Junior Jim McIntyre made the extra-point. Bowden, who completed 21 of 37 passes for 240 yards, was not sacked in the game but was intercepted three times.
The Greyhounds would score the next 14 points in the game after a scoreless third quarter. Freshman tailback Dave Darmofal, who had fumbled into the end zone earlier in the game, scored on a one-yard run with 14:29 left in the fourth quarter. Moravian started its drive on the one yard line after a 21-yard interception return by sophomore cornerback Nate Pogue.
After Moravian fumbled inside the ten yard line on its next drive, the Greyhounds held Wilkes to minus five yards on its drive. After the second sack of the game by senior defensive end Dustin Collier put Wilkes on the Moravian two yard line with a fourth and 15, junior wide receiver Michael Abbate returned the punt 29 yards for a touchdown to give Moravian a 21-14 lead with 9:47 left in the game. Abbate also caught eight passes for 90 yards in the game.
Wilkes would drive down the field on the next possession and tie the contest again at 21-21 on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Marshman to Miller. Marshman completed 19 of 33 passes for 262 yards in the game but was intercepted three times. Miller had three catches for 59 yards.
The Greyhounds were forced to punt on their next drive and the two teams traded turnovers before Wilkes had to punt with 1:50 left in regulation. Abbate returned the punt seven yards to the Wilkes 38 yard line and the Colonels were called for a personal foul-face mask penalty, which gave Moravian the ball 23 yards from the endzone with 1:40 to play.
Bowden threw a pair of incomplete passes before he hit freshman wide receiver Ed Hughes for a 15-yard pass to the Wilkes eight yard line. Barlok took two carries to give Moravian the lead with the second rush of six yards putting the Greyhounds ahead for good. Barlok led the Moravian rushing attack with 46 yards on 18 carries.
Wilkes would take the kickoff and drive down to the Moravian 40 yard line where Marshman would throw a pass that was intercepted by Pogue at the five yard line to end the game.
The Moravian defense was led by 11 tackles from senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart and sophomore linebacker John Cupples. Rhinehart added one tackle for loss and an interception while Collier had eight tackles with his two sacks, three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Wilkes was led on defense by Holmes with eight tackles, one for loss, one forced fumble and his interception.
At Susquehanna University Won 52-33
Freshman tailback Tim Barlok set a Moravian College record with a 95-yard touchdown run in the Greyhounds 52-33 victory over Susquehanna University in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action on Saturday. Barlok finished the game with a season best 197 yards, the fifth best day in school history, on 22 carries and four rushing touchdowns. Barlok also caught two passes for six yards and a score.
Moravian, which scored over 50 points for the first time since a 50-17 victory over Muhlenberg College in 1994, improved to 5-3 on the season, clinched its first non-losing season since 1997 and finished second in the MAC Commonwealth at 3-2 while the Crusaders lost their third straight game to fall to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the MAC Commonwealth.
The Greyhounds erupted for 43 points in the second half after trailing 14-9 at the intermission. Moravian also ran for 220 yards after halftime after having minus-three yards in the first two quarters.
Barlok got Moravian on the board with 19 seconds left in the first quarter on a nine-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden. The Greyhounds led 6-0 after the missed extra-point. Bowden completed 16 of 24 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
Susquehanna would take a 14-6 lead in the second quarter on a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Mike Bowman to Mark Bartosic and two extra-point kicks by Andy Nadler. The first touchdown pass covered 47 yards while the second one was 48 yards.
Moravian would score on a 25-yard field goal by junior Jim McIntyre with 19 seconds left before halftime.
The Greyhounds would blow the game open in the third quarter with three touchdowns in the first 8:02. Barlok scored the first two touchdowns on runs of 14 and seven yards. Bowden completed a two-point conversion to sophomore wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart. Rhinehart grabbed five passes for 73 yards in the game. Moravian 's third touchdown was a 12-yard pass from Bowden to junior wideout Micahel Abbate. McIntyre 's extra-point gave the Greyhounds a 31-14 lead with 6:58 left in the third quarter. Barlok 's second touchdown run and Abbate 's touchdown receptions were set up by the Moravian defense recovering fumbles. Abbate caught five passes for 75 yards.
The teams would trade touchdowns for the rest of the game. Susquehanna would strike first on an 11-yard scoring run by Jon Dvorshok. Moravian would get the lead back to 38-20 on a two-yard touchdown run by Bowden and a McIntyre kick. Bartosic and Bowman would hook up again in the fourth, this time from 46 yards out. Bowman completed 28 of 51 passes for 407 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Bartosic grabbed nine passes for 208 yards and the three touchdowns. Nadler 's extra-point made the game, 38-27 Moravian with 11:33 left to play.
The Greyhounds would add seven more points on a 24-yard run by Barlok and a McIntyre kick with 10:06 in the fourth quarter to take a 45-27 lead. Bowman completed his final touchdown pass to wide receiver Tim Ronchi, which covered 23 yards. The two-point conversion failed.
Barlok completed the game 's scoring with his school record 95-yard scamper with 3:24 to play. Barlok took the handoff and followed his blockers off the left side of the line, made one Susquehanna player miss and was off to the races. His run broke Jack Iannantuono record of 91 yards set in 1970 at Delaware Valley. McIntyre 's extra-point made the final score of 52-33. Senior running back P.J. Jankowicz added 20 yards in the game to pass Iannantuono in the Moravian record books with 2,041 career rushing yards.
Senior cornerback Doug Joseph and sophomore cornerback Nate Pogue each had eight tackles in the game and combined to break-up five passes while the Susquehanna defense was led by ten tackles from Troy Sosnovik. Sophomore safety Jarrod Pence, sophomore linebacker John Cupples and junior safety Mike Wukitsch each had interceptions in the game while sophomore defensive end Brian Cascioli and McIntyre each had a fumble recovery.
Vs. FDU-Madison Won 36-13
Senior tailback P.J. Jankowicz became the seventh Moravian College football player to surpass 2,000 yards in a career with a 32-yard performance in Moravian 's 36-13 victory over FDU-Madison in Middle Atlantic Conference action. The Greyhounds snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and moved to 4-3 on the season while the Devils fall to 0-7 on the year.
Jankowicz, who has 2,021 yards after Saturday 's game, went over the 2,000-yard plateau on a 12-yard carry in Moravian 's second drive of the afternoon. Jankowicz finished with the 32 yards on nine carries and one touchdown and he also caught three passes for 73 yards and two scores.
The Greyhounds took a 7-0 lead with 12:25 left to play in the first quarter on a seven-yard scoring scamper by freshman tailback Tim Barlok and an extra-point kick from junior Jim McIntyre . Moravian needed to move just 18 yards for the score as junior defensive tackle John Kwiatkowski had sacked FDU-Madison quarterback Brad Bishop and forced a fumbled, which was recovered by Moravian sophomore defensive end Tom Blackledge.
Moravian would take a 9-0 lead six minutes later when sophomore defensive end Brian Cascioli sacked Bishop in the end zone.
The Greyhounds would extend the lead to 23-0 before the Devils would score. Sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden hit Jankowicz on touchdown passes of four and 51 yards. Bowden completed 16 of 23 passes for 242 yards with the two touchdowns and one interception.
Sophomore running back Ed Cracchiolo got FDU-Madison on the scoreboard with 10:40 left in the third quarter on a 37-yard run. The two-point conversion failed.
Moravian would extend its lead to 36-6 on a pair of touchdown runs. Senior fullback Frank Starner, who led the Greyhound ground attack in the game with 54 yards on 12 carries, took the ball in from one yard out but McIntyre missed the extra-point. Barlok also had 54 yards on 11 carries in the game.
Jankowicz closed out the Moravian scoring with 9:35 to play in the fourth stanza on a 12-yard run. McIntyre made his fourth kick of the afternoon.
The Devils scored the game 's final points with no time left on the clock on a 21-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Patrick O'Neill, the third FDU-Madison quarterback of the game, to sophomore wide receiver Chad Pirnos and the Eric Eickhorst extra-point.
Sophomore linebacker John Cupples led the Greyhound defense with eight tackles while senior linebacker Tom Pouliot had 11 tackles for the Devils.
Vs. Juniata College Lost 27-20 Homecoming Game
Senior wide receiver Matt Eisenberg caught three touchdown passes to tie the Juniata College career record of 36 and junior quarterback Jamie Campbell connected on a school record 29 completions to lead the Eagles to a 27-20 victory over Moravian College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action Saturday.
The win lifts Juniata 's record to 1-5 on the season and 1-3 in the MAC Commonwealth while the Greyhounds lose their third straight game to fall to 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in the MAC Commonwealth. With the win, Juniata snapped an odd streak between the two schools that had not seen a winner in regulation since 1994. In 1995, the two teams tied and from 1996 through 1999 Juniata and Moravian played four overtime games with the Greyhounds winning three of those games.
Juniata took a 3-0 lead with 11:16 remaining in the first quarter on a 32-yard field goal by sophomore Dusty Lehr. Moravian would take the ensuing kickoff and drive down the field to take a 6-3 lead on a four-yard touchdown burst by freshman tailback Tim Barlok. Moravian missed the extra-point. Barlok, making his third start of the season, had his first 100-yard game in college with 139 yards on 21 carries. Barlok also led the Moravian receivers with four catches for 46 yards.
Juniata would tie the score at 6-6 with just 16 ticks left in the first stanza on a 30-yard field goal by Lehr. The Eagles took the lead into halftime with a 48-yard pass from Campbell to Eisenberg with 1:36 remaining in the second quarter. Campbell 's pass was tipped by a Moravian player before Eisenberg ran under it and took off down the sideline. Lehr made the extra-point for a 13-7 Juniata lead. In the first half, Campbell completed 18 of 28 passes for 202 yards while the Eagles were limited to minus-two yards on the ground in seven carries. Campbell completed the game with 315 yards on 29 of 49 passing with three touchdowns and one interception. He was sacked four times.
The Eagles would extend their lead to 20-7 early in the second half when Campbell and Eisenberg hooked up for a four-yard touchdown passes and a Lehr extra-point. On the touchdown, Eisenberg appeared to come down with the ball out of bounds but the officials ruled it a completion.
Moravian would respond with 1:32 left in the third quarter on a 27-yard scoring pass from sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden to sophomore tight end Rick Kulp on a third-and-14 play. Junior Jim McIntyre came on for the extra-point to cut Juniata 's lead to 20-13. Bowden completed 15 of 33 passes in the game for 153 yards but he was intercepted once and sacked five times. Junior wide receiver Michael Abbate (South Plainfield, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS) grabbed three aerials for 45 yards.
The Greyhounds tied the game with 7:29 remaining in the fourth quarter to make it look like a possible fifth straight overtime game on a one-yard run by Bowden and McIntyre 's kick.
Campbell was intercepted by sophomore strong safety Mike Wukitsch on the ensuing drive but Moravian would have to punt the ball away after three plays. After exchanging punts, Juniata would take over on the Moravian 46 with 1:29 to play. After a run for no gain by freshman Craig Moshier, who led the Eagles with 70 yards on 12 carries, Campbell found sophomore wide receiver Nate Leach, who caught ten passes for 126 yards, for 39 yards down to the seven yard line. On the next play, Campbell found Eisenberg in the corner of the end zone for a seven-yard score to seal the game with 47 seconds left on the clock. Eisenberg caught eight passes on the day, three for scores, for 109 yards. Lehr added the extra-point for the final of 27-20.
Junior linebacker Josh Seiders led the Juniata defense with 11 tackles and one sack. Sophomore defensive end Fred Taber and junior linebacker Jason Stouffer each had one and a half sacks in the contest. The Moravian defense was led by 12 tackles from senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart.
At King's College Lost 17-14
Freshman Matt VonTauhausen connected on a 30-yard field goal with 4:38 to play in the fourth quarter breaking a 14-14 tie and give the King 's College football team a 17-14 victory over Moravian College in Middle Atlantic Conference action.
The Greyhounds did hold the Monarchs ' and MAC rushing leader senior Damon Saxon to 107 yards on 28 carries, 81 yards below his season average.
Moravian jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 8:22 remaining in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back P.J. Jankowicz. Freshman Josh Miller made the extra-point. Jankowicz led Moravian on the ground with 41 yards on 12 carries and now needs just 33 yards to become the seventh player in Greyhound history to run for 2,000 yards in a career.
King 's would answer Moravian 's score with 8:24 left in the first half on a 13-yard pass from junior Tom Pierantozzi to junior Jim Pio. VonTauhausen connected on the extra-point to tie the score. Pierantozzi seven of 17 passes for 92 yards in the game.
The Monarchs would take a 14-7 lead with 1:41 to play in the third quarter on a 13-yard scamper by Saxton and VonTauhausen 's extra-point.
The Greyhounds got a break early in the fourth quarter when junior defensive back Jim McIntyre blocked a VonTauhausen punt and Moravian took over on the King 's 45-yard line. Moravian drove down to the 23-yard line where the offense faced a fourth-and-12. For the fourth time this season, the Greyhounds connected for a touchdown on the fourth down play as sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden hit freshman wide receiver Kevin Miltenberger for a 23-yard touchdown. Miller 's extra-point tied the game at 14:14 with 8:40 to play in regulation.
Bowden completed 14 of 30 passes for 184 yards but he was intercepted twice and sacked six times. Bowden, who also fumbled three times, losing one recovered a fumble by King 's Jacob Blomgren while Blomgren was returning an interception. Sophomore wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart grabbed six passes for 82 yards in the game.
VonTauhausen 's kick capped a ten-play, 51-yard drive that took 4:02 on the ensuing drive after the Greyhounds had tied the game.
Moravian had two chances to drive down the field and win the game but one ended in a punt and the other by a sack of Bowden.
Defensively for King 's, sophomore cornerback Sean Frazier had ten tackles while sophomore defensive end Steve Wilson had two sacks and three tackles for loss among his seven tackles. Senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart led the Moravian defense with nine tackles.
Vs. Widener University – Lost 46-20
Junior linebacker Andrew Waxman returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns and senior quarterback Mike Granato threw two touchdown passes to junior wide receiver Mike Coleman to lead the Widener University football team to a 46-20 victory over Moravian College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action Saturday.
In the battle of the unbeaten teams, the Pioneers, ranked 21st in this week 's American Football Coaches Association Top 25 poll, move to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the MAC Commonwealth while the Greyhounds fall to 3-1 and 2-1. Widener has now scored over 40 points in its last three games, a first in school history.
Widener scored the first 21 points of the game with junior fullback Sean Selover running in from one-yard out with 10:09 left in the first stanza. Freshman Paul Ragan added the extra-point. The Pioneers next drive was set up when senior cornerback Dante Trader intercepted a pass from Moravian 's sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden. The interception was the first of the season thrown by Bowden. Granato, who completed 12 of 23, passes for 188 yards, connected with Coleman on a seven-yard scoring play. Granato moved over 6,000 career passing yards in the game (6,035), the first Widener quarterback to accomplish that feat.
Waxman would make the first of his two interceptions on the ensuing drive, returning it 41 yards for the score. Ragan 's kick made the lead 21-0 for Widener with 14:45 left in the second quarter.

Ambrose finished the game with 125 yards on 15 carries and became the first Widener freshman since 1996 to run for over 100 yards in a game.
Moravian would make a game of it with a pair of touchdown passes from Bowden to junior wide receiver Michael Abbate. The first pass covered 21 yards and was followed by a Miller kick while the second score was from 41 yards and the extra-point failed, making the score 34-20 Widener with 7:24 to play in the fourth quarter. Abbate had seven receptions for 188 yards on the day, the third highest single game-receiving total in Moravian history.
Widener would put the game away with a pair of touchdowns in the final 4:32. Coleman grabbed a short pass from Granato and went 47 yards for the score. Ragan 's kick was no good. Coleman had four catches for 80 yards in the contest.
Waxman ended the scoring with no time on the clock as he intercepted a pass from senior Jed Moyer and returned it 59 yards to set the final score at 46-20 Widener.
Sophomore cornerback Ryan Wehmeyer led the Widener defense with nine tackles while senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart and sophomore linebacker John Cupples each had nine tackles in the game for Moravian. Sophomore safety Jarrod Pence had one interception for the Greyhounds, his fourth of the season, and junior safety Mike Wukitsch also had one interception to give the Greyhounds 11 interceptions in four games this fall.
At Lebanon Valley College – Won 19-6
Sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden completed 15 of 29 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Moravian College football team to a 19-6 victory over Lebanon Valley College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action.
For the Greyhounds, now 3-0 for the first time since a 4-0 start in 1988, the defense helped control the ball for Bowden and the offense. Moravian (2-0 in the MAC Commonwealth) forced four turnovers in the game and intercepted three passes for the third straight contest this season. The defense, which dropped five more possible interceptions in the game, came into the game leading the MAC in scoring defense and improved on that number by allowing just the six points to the Flying Dutchmen (1-2 overall, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth).
Sophomore safety Jarrod Pence got Moravian on the board with 10:42 remaining in the first quarter when he scooped up a fumble at the Lebanon Valley 29 yard line and returned it untouched for a touchdown. Senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart, who had 13 tackles in the game, a sack and an interception, forced the fumble on the play. Junior Marc Roesch had his extra-point attempt blocked. Roesch would also miss two field goals in the game. Sophomore defensive lineman Brian Cascioli blocked a punt on the possession prior to Pence 's fumble return and recovered it at the 15 yard line but the Greyhounds could only muster a Roesch field goal attempt.
Bowden and the Greyhound offense got the ball with 2:02 remaining in the second quarter and for the third straight week, Bowden led the offense down the field for a touchdown just prior to the half. Saturday, Bowden connected on a 44-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Jeff Lowry. However, after a holding penalty, Bowden was off the mark on a two-point conversion attempt to make the score 12-3 at the half. Lowry caught three passes for 64 yards in the game.
Bowden would complete the scoring in the game with 4:45 left in the fourth quarter when he hit junior wide receiver Michael Abbate for a nine-yard score. Freshman kicker Josh Miller made the extra-point to set the final score at 19-6.
In addition to Rhinehart 's 11 tackles, sophomore linebacker Bill Engler had 13 tackles and a sack. Senior cornerback Doug Joseph had seven tackles and two interceptions for 34 yards while sophomore linebacker John Cupples had ten tackles. On offense, senior running back P.J. Jankowicz had 14 carries for 32 yards to move him within 82 yards of 2,000 in his career. Jankowicz also grabbed four passes for 46 yards while freshman wideout Kevin Miltenberger had three receptions for 41 yards. Freshman Tim Barlok had three kickoff returns for 78 yards and seven carries for nine yards.
Vs. Albright College – Won 27-17
Sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden made his first collegiate start a good one as he completed 19 of 33 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns to lead Moravian to a 27-17 victory over Albright College in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action. Bowden got the Greyhounds, who are now 2-0 on the season for the first time since 1996, on the board with 10:55 remaining in the first quarter when he connected with junior wide receiver Michael Abbate on a 64-yard scoring strike. Junior Marc Roesch made the extra-point. Abbate caught three passes for 109 yards.
Moravian would regain the lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first stanza on a one-yard scamper by senior tailback P.J. Jankowicz and a Roesch extra-point. Jankowicz had 30 yards on ten carries to move within 114 yards of 2,000 in his career. Freshman tailback Tim Barlok led the Greyhound rushing attack with 74 yards on six carries. Bowden, who was sacked four times in the game, gave the Greyhounds the lead for good with a one-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds remaining in the first half to cap a 10-play, 55-yard drive in the final 3:21. It was the second straight week that Bowden drove Moravian down the field for a score just before the half.
The Greyhounds put the game away with 12:54 remaining in regulation with a 21-yard scoring pass from Bowden to freshman wide receiver Kevin Miltenberger on a fourth and seven-play from the Albright 21 yard line. The Lions had declined a pass interference penalty on the previous play against Moravian in the end zone. Roesch missed the extra-point. For the second straight week, Miltenberger was the top target for the Greyhound quarterbacks, catching six passes for 62 yards.
Senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart led Moravian 's defense for the second straight week with ten tackles including one for loss and one interception, which he returned 30 yards with under two minutes remaining in the contest to seal the game. Sophomore safety Jarrod Pence had one forced fumble and one interception to end the first half. It was Pence 's third pickoff of the season. Senior cornerback Doug Joseph also had an interception for the Greyhounds. Sophomore defensive tackle Pat Mancini added five tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for Moravian.
At Delaware Valley College – Won 19-10
Sophomore quarterback Charlie Bowden completed 11 of 20 passes for 136 yards and led all four scoring drives as the Moravian College football team opened the 2000 season with a 19-10 victory at Delaware Valley College. The season opening victory for the Greyhounds was their first since defeating King 's College to begin the 1996 season.
Bowden, who rotated at quarterback with senior Jed Moyer, led the Greyhounds to a 3-0 lead with 3:56 remaining in the second quarter. Junior Marc Roesch connected on a 28-yard field goal after Bowden took Moravian 29 yards in nine plays to set up the kick. Moyer completed five of eight passes for 67 yards.
The Aggies took a 7-3 lead with 33 seconds left in the first half when quarterback Duke Greco connected on 20-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Rich Gear. Moravian started at its own 38-yard line with 27 seconds remaining. On the first play of the drive, Bowden hit sophomore wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart for a 22-yard completion. After a timeout, Bowden connected with junior wideout Michael Abbate for an 11-yard gain out of bounds. Bowden then connected with Rhinehart again for a 26-yard completion to the Delaware Valley three-yard line. The Greyhounds used another timeout to stop the clock with four seconds before the half. Bowden flipped the ball to Abbate on an option play after the timeout to give the Greyhounds a 9-7 halftime lead.
After the Aggies (0-1) scored a field goal with 11:36 remaining in the third quarter, Bowden led the Greyhounds to ten points in the final stanza. The Greyhounds took the lead for good 26 seconds into the fourth quarter as sophomore Josh Fick took a Bowden handoff 40 yards up the middle for a touchdown. Roesch 's extra-point put Moravian up 16-10. Fick finished the day with 58 yards on nine carries. Moravian 's final score came with 6:40 left on a 33-yard field goal by Roesch.
On defense for the Greyhounds, sophomore linebacker Bill Engler had 13 tackles with two for loss and half a sack. Senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart had 11 tackles with one and a half sacks and three tackles for loss. Sophomore safety Jarrod Pence had a pair of interceptions and six tackles while junior safety Mike Wukitsch had one interception, two pass break-ups and five tackles. Junior defensive lineman John Kwiatkowski and sophomore defensive lineman Tom Blackledge each had one sack in the game
