At FDU-Madison - Won 27-0
Freshman tailback Cody Hendershot ran for 72 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown in his first career start to lead the Moravian College football team to a 27-0 victory over FDU-Madison in Middle Atlantic Conference game.
The Greyhounds finished the season with a 5-5 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the MAC while FDU-Madison finishes the season with a 1-9 overall mark and a 1-8 MAC record. The game was a make-up game that was originally scheduled for September 15th.
Moravian took the opening kickoff, after a 31-yard kickoff return by junior Eric Gustafson, and drove 49 yards for the score. Hendershot finished off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Senior Jim McIntyre made the extra-point for a 7-0 lead.
Hendershot started the game for Moravian due to injuries to tailbacks junior Josh Fick and sophomores Tim Barlok and David Darmofal.
The Greyhounds took over on their second possession with just 27 yards to the end zone after a bad snap on the Devils punt attempt. Senior wide receiver Michael Abbate capped off the seven-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run. McIntyre's kick gave the Greyhounds a 14-0 lead with 6:59 remaining in the first quarter.
Moravian made its lead 21-0 with a one-yard touchdown run by freshman tailback Bill Carasia with 12:17 left in the third quarter. McIntyre added his third extra-point of the game.
The Greyhounds final score came with 40 seconds left in the third quarter when junior quarterback Charlie Bowden picked up a fumble by sophomore tailback Ray Burgan at the four yard line and ran into the end zone. Senior Marc Roesch missed the extra-point to set the final score 27-0. The touchdown capped a 15-play, 92-yard drive that took 9:28 of the third quarter. Moravian had taken possession of ball after forcing the Devils to turn the ball over on downs inside the ten yard line.
Burgan finished the game with 46 yards on 12 carries while Gustafson had 42 yards on seven carries. Moravian had 229 yards on 56 carries in the game. Bowden ran for 33 yards on five carries and he was not sacked while completing 11 of 17 passes for 146 yards. Abbate had three receptions for 30 yards and 15 yards on five carries. Abbate completed his career with 114 receptions (fourth in school history) for 1,621 yards (third) and 13 touchdowns (third).
Junior tight end Rick Kulp led the Greyhounds with three receptions for 37 yards while junior wideout Jarod Rhinehart had three receptions for 31 yards. Rhinehart has 86 career receptions for 1,122 yards.
For FDU-Madison, junior running back Ed Cracchiolo ran for 145 yards on 23 carries to set the FDU-Madison single season rushing record with1,095 yards. The Devils gained just 174 yards on 40 plays as Moravian had control of the clock 39:18 to 20:42.
Sophomore safety John Panikiewsky led the Moravian defense with nine tackles with three tackles for loss and a half a sack. Junior defensive lineman Tom Blackledge had five tackles with one and a half sacks. McIntyre stop the final FDU-Madison drive with 2:55 to play with an interception in the end zone.
Sophomore defensive backs Greg Martone and Chris Trolan each made 12 tackles for the FDU-Madison defense.
At Muhlenberg College - Won 17-7
Senior wide receiver Michael Abbate caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score and junior cornerback Jarrod Pence was named the Moravian College Most Valuable Player of the game as he added three interceptions to tie the school record while leading the Moravian football team to a 17-7 non-conference victory over rival Muhlenberg College. The game was the 50th in the series between the two schools with Moravian now holding a 31-18-1 lead.
The victory lifts the Greyhounds record to 4-5 overall with one game to play at FDU-Madison next Saturday while the Mules fall to 7-3 and await a possible ECAC berth. Muhlenberg did earn the Centennial Conference Co-Championship on Saturday with Johns Hopkins University defeating Western Maryland College.
The Mules jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 7:37 to play in the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Justin Jones to senior tight end Michael Stankowicz. Junior Chris Reed added the extra-point for a 7-0 Muhlenberg lead but that was all the scoring the Mules would have on the afternoon. Jones finished the game eight of 17 for 55 yards with six interceptions and he fumbled the ball away once to account for all seven of Muhlenberg's turnovers
Moravian got on the board with 1:31 to play in the second quarter on a 20-yard field goal by senior Marc Roesch. Roesch's field goal capped a 24-play, 68-yard drive that consumed 12:02 of the second quarter. The Mules hurt themselves on the drive, committing three pass interference penalties on long third downs, including one in the end zone to give the Greyhounds three automatic first downs to keep the drive alive.
On the second play of the ensuing drive for Muhlenberg, Jones threw his first interception, which was grabbed by junior nose tackle Pat Mancini. Moravian junior quarterback Charlie Bowden needed just four plays to get the Greyhounds in the end zone before the first half expired. On third and ten from the 37-yard line, Bowden found Abbate in the end zone. A Muhlenberg defender knocked the ball away from Abbate but he stuck his hands behind his head to make the touchdown catch. Senior Jim McIntyre made the extra-point to give the Greyhounds a 10-7 lead with 34 seconds left in the first half.
Moravian scored the final points of the game with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter when Abbate ran an 11-yard reverse off the right side off the offensive line for a touchdown. McIntyre's kick set the final score at 17-7 Moravian. Moravian had gained possession for the touchdown drive on Pence's second of his three interceptions in the game.
For the Greyhounds, who ran 74 plays for 237 yards, sophomore tailback Tim Barlok had 66 yards on 24 carries to move with 27 yards of 1,000 in his career. Junior fullback Eric Gustafson had 21 yards on seven carries while sophomore tailback David Darmofal added 20 yards on ten carries.
Bowden completed nine of 20 passes for 113 yards while junior wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart had four receptions for 32 yards. Abbate caught two passes for 51 yards to give him 111 receptions (fourth all-time) for 1,589 yards (third all-time) and 13 touchdowns (third in school history).
Muhlenberg sophomore running back Matt Bernardo, who went over 1,000 yards for the season early in the first quarter, was held 62 yards under his season average of 110 per game with just 48 yards on 13 carries. Senior wide receiver Joshua Carter had four receptions for 53 yards.
Defensively for the Greyhounds, Pence led the squad with seven tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble. Junior defensive lineman Tom Blackledge had six tackles with three for loss. McIntyre and junior linebacker Steve Maslanek each had interceptions in the game.
For Muhlenberg, senior linebacker Jon-Paul Skarpetowski had 12 tackles while junior defensive end Mike Koth added ten tackles with five tackles for loss and one and a half sacks.
Vs. Susquehanna University - Lost 41-14
Junior quarterback Mike Bowman completed 14 of 28 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns and he helped the Susquehanna University football team convert four of seven turnovers by Moravian College into touchdowns as the Crusaders earned a 41-14 victory over the Greyhounds in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday.
Susquehanna improves to 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the MAC heading into the final game of the season next weekend at home with Lebanon Valley College. Moravian falls to 3-5 overall and in the MAC with two games remaining including a non-conference contest at Muhlenberg College next Saturday.
The Crusaders jumped on the board first with a 29-yard pass from Bowman to sophomore wideout Mark Bartosic with 9:26 remaining in the first quarter. Bartosic grabbed six passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns in the game and he set Susquehanna records with 63 receptions in a season, 1,074 yards in a season and 27 career touchdowns.
Susquehanna gained possession of the ball on Moravian's second fumble of the game on a punt return by senior Michael Abbate.
The Crusaders made the score 14-0 with 3:08 left in the first stanza on a 12-yard run by freshman Bryan Strohl to cap an eight-play, 70 yard drive. Strohl's touchdown and junior Andy Nadler's second extra-point of the game were set up by an interception of Moravian junior quarterback Charlie Bowden by Susquehanna junior cornerback Antonio Nash.
The Crusaders went on top 21-0 with 5:37 left in the second quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by freshman Jason Eck. Eck finished the game with 50 yards on 22 carries. Susquehanna had just 12 yards on the drive as junior defensive back Nick Chesney returned an interception of Bowden 20 yards. Bowden was just two-for-seven in the game for 21 yards and two interceptions.
Susquehanna had a chance to extend the lead in the final minute of the first half but the Greyhound defense shut the door twice from the one-yard line.
Moravian would finally get on the board in the third quarter on a one-yard run by sophomore quarterback Will Seng. Senior Jim McIntyre added the extra-point to cut the Susquehanna lead to 21-7.
The Crusaders would score the next 14 points in the game with a 50-yard scoring pass from Bowman to Bartosic with 13:43 left in the fourth quarter and a 15 yard run by junior Jon Dvorshak with 10:27 remaining in the game. On the touchdown pass, Bowman was hit as he threw the ball and still was able to find Bartosic who broke three tackles on his way to the end zone. The Dvorshak touchdown was set up by Moravian's fourth fumble of the game. Dvorshak finished the game with 70 yards on eight carries to lead all backs in the game.
Moravian scored its final touchdown with 7:22 remaining in the contest on a 22-yard pass from Seng to Abbate and McIntyre adding the extra-point to cut Susquehanna's lead to 35-14. Seng completed eight of 14 passes for 94 yards in relief of Bowden but he was intercepted once. Abbate grabbed four passes for 65 yards to go over 1,500 yards, just the fifth player in Moravian history to reach 1,500 yards with 1,568 yards on 109 career receptions.
On the ground for the Greyhounds, sophomore tailback David Darmofal ran for 65 yards on 11 carries while sophomore tailback Tim Barlok added 51 yards on 14 attempts.
Susquehanna finished the scoring with 3:03 left in the fourth quarter on a five yard Bowman to Bartosic. Nadler missed his first extra-point of the afternoon to set the final score at 41-14 Susquehanna.
Nash led the Crusader defense with 12 tackles and three pass break-ups while senior linebacker Troy Sosnovik had ten tackles, two forced fumbles and a 39-yard fumble return.
For the Greyhounds, sophomore linebacker Bill Engler had 13 tackles while junior linebacker John Cupples had nine tackles.
At Albright College - Lost 30-21
Senior tailback Keith Johnson ran for 113 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns to lead the Albright College football team to a 30-21 victory over Moravian College in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday.
Moravian jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 7:10 left in the first quarter on a ten-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Charlie Bowden to sophomore tailback Tim Barlok. Senior Jim McIntyre made the extra-point.
Albright came back to take an 8-7 lead with 1:30 remaining in the first stanza on a one-yard run by Johnson and a two-point conversion run by senior safety Mike Beckley on a bad snap on the extra-point. Beckley had an interception of Bowden to give the Lions' possession for the drive. The Lions extended their lead to 14-7 on a 33-yard pass from senior quarterback Mike Strack, who completed nine of 26 passes for 170 yards and two scores, to senior wide receiver Jason Scheerer. Beckley attempted a pass on the extra-point play after another bad snap but the pass was incomplete. Albright added two points on a safety with 5:21 left in the second quarter when sophomore linebacker Kenny Montout blocked a punt attempt by senior kicker Marc Roesch.
Moravian senior wideout Michael Abbate pulled down a 33-yard reception for the 100th of his career, making him the fifth Greyhound in school history to catch 100 passes. Abbate finished the game with six receptions for 111 yards to move into fourth all-time with 105 receptions for 1,473 yards (fifth all-time).\
Albright scored on its first possession of the second half on a 20-yard run by Johnson. Senior George Merrill added the extra-point for a 23-7 lead with 13:25 left in the third quarter.
The Greyhounds cut Albright's lead to 23-15 with 7:42 remaining in the third quarter on a nine-yard touchdown scamper off the left side by sophomore tailback David Darmofal and a run by Bowden for the two-point conversion. Darmofal finished the game with 55 yards on ten carries while the Moravian running attack was led by Barlok, who had 97 yards, three more than his season total, on 23 carries.
The Lions scored on a 34-yard pass from Strack to freshman wide receiver Nick Cushman. Merrill's kick extended Albright's lead to 30-15 early in the fourth quarter.
Moravian kept itself in the game with a 22-yard pass from Bowden, who completed 15 of 34 passes for 159 yards, to Abbate. A failed two-point conversion made the score 30-21 with 6:35 left to play in the fourth quarter.
Defensively for Moravian sophomore linebacker Bill Engler had 11 tackles. Junior linebacker John Cupples and sophomore defensive back John Panikiewsky each added nine tackles in the loss. Senior linebacker Tom Fitti paced the Lions with 18 stops while senior safety Steve Biddle added 12 tackles.
Vs. Wilkes University – Won 25-15
Junior fullback Eric Gustafson ran for touchdowns of 11 and seven yards and helped the Moravian College football team rack up 218 yards rushing on 53 carries in a 25-15 victory over Wilkes University in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday.
Gustafson, who had 40 yards on 11 carries, gave Moravian a 6-0 with 8:44 to play in the first quarter on his 11-yard touchdown score. The Greyhound's extra-point attempt was blocked.
The Colonels would take a 7-6 lead with 9:57 to play in the second quarter when MAC leading rusher freshman Brett Trichilo ran for a 10-yard touchdown to cap an 11-play, 93-yard drive. Junior Will McLaughlin's kick gave Wilkes its only lead of the game.
The Greyhounds would take the lead for good with 42 seconds remaining in the first half on a ten-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Charlie Bowden to junior tight end Rick Kulp. Bowden's two-point pass attempt failed. Bowden, who missed last week's game with a dislocated finger on his throwing hand, completed nine of 18 passes for 123 yards while Kulp had two catches for 55 yards.
Moravian extended its lead to 18-7 at the 12:27 mark of the third quarter. The Greyhounds took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored on a two-yard touchdown run by sophomore tailback Tim Barlok, who returned to the line-up after missing three weeks with a shoulder injury. Again the Greyhounds failed on the two-point conversion attempt. Barlok finished the game with 81 yards on 15 carries while sophomore tailback David Darmofal, who made his first career start, finished with a career high 85 yards on 19 carries.
The Greyhounds scored their final touchdown with 1:51 to play in the third quarter on Gustafson's seven-yard scamper. Senior Marc Roesch made the extra-point for a 25-7 Moravian lead.
The Colonels scored with 13:31 left in the fourth quarter on Trichilo's second touchdown of the game, a one-yard run. Freshman quarterback Matt Kaskie hit sophomore wide receiver Mike Walk with the two-point conversion to cut the score to 25-15.
Trichilo finished the game with 123 yards, 26 yards below his season average, on 24 carries while Kaskie, who played every series but the first of the game due to a concussion by starting quarterback junior Jeff Marshman, completed seven of 13 passes for 124 yards. Walk had four receptions for 54 yards.
Junior linebacker John Cupples led the Moravian defense with 11 tackles including one of the Greyhound's three sacks; four tackles for loss and one fumble recovery. Senior defensive lineman John Kwiatkowski added nine tackles including one for loss while senior safety Mike Wukitsch have four tackles with a sack and a forced fumble on the same play.
Senior defensive back Mark Hendry led the Colonel defense with 12 tackles while junior linebacker Mike DaRe and sophomore linebacker Mike Rogers each had 11 stops. Senior defensive lineman Demetri Tzovolos added ten tackles.
Vs. Delaware Valley College – Won 41-0
Junior tailback Josh Fick ran for 172 yards, the ninth highest single game total in school history, on 21 carries with two first quarter touchdowns to lead the Moravian College football team to a 41-0 victory over Delaware Valley College in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday.
Moravian's last shutout came in 1998 when the Greyhounds blanked FDU-Madison, 35-0 on homecoming and the last time Moravian won by more that 40 points was in 1993 with a 49-0 victory versus King's College.
Moravian got on the board just 2:36 into the game when senior wide receiver Michael Abbate ran in from three yards out to give the Greyhounds a 6-0 lead after a failed extra-point.
After fumbling on their next possession, the Greyhounds went 80-yards on five plays with Fick carrying the ball three times with a 54 yard run and a four yard touchdown scamper. Moravian made the score 14-0 with a two-point conference pass from sophomore quarterback Will Seng to junior tight end Rick Kulp. Seng started the game for junior quarterback Charlie Bowden, who missed the game after dislocating a finger on his throwing hand in practice during the week.
Junior cornerback Jarrod Pence intercepted Delaware Valley quarterback Duke Greco in the first play of the next possession to set up a Fick 10-yard touchdown run with two seconds left in the first quarter. Senior Marc Roesch made the extra-point for a 21-0 lead.
On Moravian's first drive of the second quarter, Seng connected again with Kulp, this time on a nine-yard touchdown throw for his first collegiate touchdown pass. Roesch added his second extra-point of the game.
The two squads traded punts before Moravian took over on the Delaware Valley 47 yard line after a four-yard punt. After a 32-yard run by Fick and a four rush by Abbate, Seng connected with freshman wide receiver on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Moravian led 35-0 at halftime after Roesch's extra-point. Seng completed his first six passes of the game and finished eight of 13 for 127 yards and he was sacked just once. Seng added 19 yards on the ground.
Moravian closed out the scoring 1:37 into the fourth quarter when Abbate ran a reverse in from 19 yards out for his second touchdown of the game. The extra-point was wide to set the final score at 41-0. Abbate had 48 yards on seven carries and he caught three passes for 51 yards to give him 99 career receptions and 1,342 career receiving yards.
For the Greyhounds, sophomore tailback David Darmofal added 50 yards on 13 carries as Moravian ran for 299 yards on 50 attempts. Greco completed 14 of 31 passes for 166 yards for Delaware Valley including eight pass completions to senior wide receiver Rich Gear for 100 yards. However, the Moravian defense sacked Greco nine times and forced him into four interceptions.
Defensively for Moravian, junior linebacker John Cupples had ten tackles with two for loss, one sack and an interception return of 46 yards that ended Delaware Valley's best scoring chance of the afternoon in the third quarter. Junior defensive end Tom Blackledge, freshman defensive lineman Shaun Nelson and freshman safety Bill Skriletz each had seven tackles in the game with Blackledge and Nelson each having one sack. Sophomore linebacker Bill Engler and freshman defensive lineman John Dowling each had two sacks in the game.
At Juniata College – Lost 39-35
The Greyhounds lost a 35-6 lead in a 39-35 loss to Juniata College in Middle Atlantic Conference action. Freshman quarterback Greg Troutman, who completed 27 of 64 passes for 432 yards and three touchdowns, hit junior wide receiver Nate Leach with a 23-yard touchdown pass to cap a 12-play, 95-yard drive with 39 seconds remaining to lead the Juniata College from a 35-6 deficit to the victory over Moravian College in Middle Atlantic Conference action.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter on a 12-yard run by junior tailback Josh Fick, who had 83 yards on 26 carries (the third highest single game rushing attempts in school history), and the extra-point by senior Marc Roesch. The score was setup by a 24-yard interception return by senior cornerback Jim McIntyre to the Juniata 22-yard line.
Moravian extended the lead to 14-0 on a 17-yard touchdown strike from junior quarterback Charlie Bowden to senior wide receiver Michael Abbate, who had ten receptions for 99 yards. Roesch added the extra-point.
Juniata got on the board with a 28-yard field goal by Dusty Lehr with 14:07 left in the second quarter after Juniata had a touchdown called back on an illegal block. Juniata had started the drive at the Moravian 35-yard line after recovering a Moravian fumble. The Eagles made the score 14-6 Moravian with a 19-yard field goal by Lehr with 9:33 left in the first half.
With 19 seconds left in the second quarter, Bowden hit sophomore wide receiver Jeff Lowry on a nine-yard scoring strike. Roesch added the extra-point for a 21-6 halftime lead. Moravian gained possession for the drive when junior nose tackle Pat Mancini had a sack on a Juniata fourth down play.
The Greyhounds extended the lead to 28-6 with 8:18 left in the third quarter when Fick capped a seven-play, 87-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run. Junior fullback Eric Gustafson, who finished with a career high 121 yards (the 20th best game in school history) on 14 carries, setup the touchdown with a 57-yard run on the previous play.
Bowden, Bowden completed 22 of 39 passes for 220 yards but was intercepted twice in the game and the Greyhounds lost three fumbles, connected on his third touchdown pass with 3:50 left in the third quarter when he hit junior wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart with a seven-yard pass. Rhinehart had five catches for 45 yards and now has 73 career receptions for 1,021 yards, making him the 12th Greyhound to have over 1,000 yards receiving. Roesch added the extra-point to give the Greyhounds a 35-6 lead.
Juniata scored its first touchdown of the game when Troutman ran an option 54 yards for the score. Lehr added the extra-point to cut the lead to 35-13 Moravian. Troutman hit Leach with a 31-yard scoring strike but the extra-point hit the upright to set the score at 35-19 Moravian.
Troutman, who ran for 108 yards on 15 carries, added a 14-yard touchdown run with 12:03 left in the fourth quarter and he hit senior wide receiver Josh Chubb for the two-point conversion to cut the Greyhounds lead to 35-27. Juniata pulled within two in the game on a 56-yard pass from Troutman to senior wide receiver Lucas Kelleher with 7:05 left to play in the fourth quarter. Juniata missed the two-point conversion to tie the game.
Roesch had a 24-yard field goal attempt blocked by junior defensive lineman Nick Myers with 2:21 left in the fourth quarter that would have given the Greyhounds a five-point lead. Troutman led the Eagles down the field for the winning touchdown on the ensuing play.
Senior linebacker Josh Seiders led the Juniata defense with 16 tackles while sophomore linebacker Bill Engler paced the Greyhound defense with 11 tackles.
Vs. Lebanon Valley College – Won 34-20
Junior tailback Josh Fick, making the first start of his collegiate career, ran for two touchdowns in the first 6:27 of the game to lead the Moravian College football team to a 14-0 lead and eventual 34-20 victory over Lebanon Valley College in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday.
Moravian wins it's first game of the season and improves to 1-2 overall and in the MAC while Lebanon Valley falls to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the MAC.
Fick scored on a three-yard run with 11:22 to play in the first quarter on Moravian's first offensive play of the game. The extra-point attempt was wide. Junior Jon McCann blocked a Flying Dutchmen punt attempt on the 20-yardline and it was recovered by sophomore linebacker Steve Maslanek on the three to setup Fick's score.
Fick, who finished the game with 125 yards on 19 carries and three receptions for 45 yards, was the Greyhounds whole offense on the next drive as well. After an incompletion, Fick had runs of 52, one and one yards to score. Moravian connected on a two-point conversion pass from junior quarterback Charlie Bowden to junior tight end Rick Kulp to make the score 14-0.
The Greyhounds extended their lead to 21-0 with 10:21 left in the second quarter on a 36-yard touchdown run by sophomore tailback David Darmofal, who finished the game with 46 yards on four carries. Senior wide receiver Michael Abbate added 35 yards on four carries and two receptions for 15 yards for the Greyhounds.
Lebanon Valley struck back on its next drive after a 41-yard kickoff return sophomore Pete Henning. Senior fullback Mark Ely finished off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 7:22 left in the first half.
The Flying Dutchmen scored the only other points of the second quarter on a 21-yard field goal by sophomore Jim Poverotney. Lebanon Valley had gained possession for the drive when senior defensive back Malou McIntire blocked a Marc Roesch 38-yard field goal attempt.
Moravian scored on the opening drive of the second half on a 27-yard scoring strike from Bowden to sophomore wideout Jeff Lowry. Bowden completed 17 of 33 passes for 210 yards in the game with two scores and three interceptions. Lowry caught six of those passes for 82 yards.
Lebanon Valley cut the score to 28-17 with 9:47 left in the third quarter when Henning ran in from 21 yards out. Henning finished the contest with 67 yards on 26 carries and three pass receptions for 42 yards. The Flying Dutchmen had taken possession on a McIntire block of a Roesch punt attempt.
The Greyhounds scored their final touchdown with 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a 13-yard pass from Bowden to junior wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart. Roesch's extra-point hit the right upright and bounced wide. Rhinehart had four catches for 62 yards in the game.
Lebanon Valley finished the scoring in the contest with a 20-yard field goal from Poverotney in with 7:41 to play to set the final at 34-20, Moravian. Lebanon Valley junior quarterback Dallas Noll completed 16 of 33 passes in the game for 247 yards but he was intercepted twice. Sophomore tight end Scott Marek had four catches for 68 yards while sophomore wide receiver Matt Bubnis had four receptions for 49 yards.
Junior linebacker John Cupples led the Moravian defense with 15 tackles including four for loss. Sophomore linebacker Bill Engler added 13 tackles, four for loss and one and a half of Moravian's seven sacks in the game. Freshman safety Bill Skriletz had two interceptions in the game for Moravian.
Senior linebacker Chad Hoofnagle led the Flying Dutchmen with ten tackles with two for loss while McIntire had five tackles, one interception, three pass break-ups and the two blocked kicks.
At Widener University – Lost 44-26
Junior quarterback Mike Warker completed 24of 38 passes for a school record 462 yards and a school record six touchdowns to lead the Widener University football team to a 44-26 victory over Moravian College in Middle Atlantic Conference action.
Moravian took a 6-0 lead with 9:07 to play in the first quarter on a four-yard touchdown run by junior Josh Fick. Fick's run capped an eight-play, 43-yard drive. There was a bad snap and the extra-point attempt came up short.
Widener took the lead, which it would never relinquish, with 4:54 left in the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass from Warker to senior wide receiver Jim Jones, who caught 12 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Paul Ragan made the extra point. Widener extended its lead to 13-6 with 9:05 left in the second quarter on a 34-yard pass from Warker to senior wideout Michael Coleman, who had five receptions for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Ragan's kick hit the upright and was no good.
Moravian scored with 7:30 left in the second quarter on a 46-yard touchdown run by Fick, who finished the game with 80 yards on 12 carries. Senior Jim McIntyre hit the upright to make the score 13-12 Widener. Moravian had thought about going for the two-point conversion on the play. Widener scored the next 21 points prior to halftime. Warker hit Jones for a 19-yard touchdown pass and Coleman for touchdown scores of 53 and ten yards. All three touchdowns came in the final 4:56 of the second quarter and gave the Pioneers a 34-12 halftime lead. The Pioneers scored first in the second half on a 21-yard field goal by Ragan with 9:19 to play in the third quarter to extend their lead to 37-12.
The Greyhounds scored just 1:04 later on a 39-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Charlie Bowden, who completed 13 of 36 passes for 195 yards, to senior wide receiver Michael Abbate, who caught six passes for 101 yards. McIntyre made the extra-point to make the score 37-19. Warker finished off the scoring for Widener on a 46-yard touchdown pass to Jones with 4:13 left in the third. Junior running back Austin Martin led Widener with 70 yards on 12 carries.
Moravian finished off the scoring for the game with a one-yard touchdown run by junior running back Will Shorman. McIntyre's kick set the final score at 44-26. Shorman's touchdown run was setup by a 51-yard pass from sophomore quarterback William Seng to sophomore wide receiver Ed Hughes to the one-yard line.
The Widener defense was senior defensive back T.J. Hess with seven tackles and two pass break-ups. For the Greyhounds, junior cornerback Jarrod Pence had 11 tackles, one for loss and three pass break-ups. Junior linebacker John Cupples added nine tackles for Moravian. Sophomore linebacker Steve Maslanek had two sacks among his six tackles for Moravian.
At FDU-Madison – Cancelled
The Moravian College football game at FDU-Madison has been cancelled for Saturday, September 15th. "FDU-Madison decided this afternoon to cancel the football game due to this week's tragic events in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania," stated Paul R. Moyer, Moravian College Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Moravian will host its other scheduled athletic events this weekend." (Saturday, September 15th - women's soccer versus Widener University, field hockey versus Widener University, women's tennis versus Lebanon Valley College, and the men's and women's cross country teams running in an invitational at Middlebury College in Vermont). Moravian resumed athletic events on Thursday, September 13th after postponing contests for two days. No make-up date for the Moravian - FDU-Madison football game has been scheduled at this time. The other five football games scheduled that include teams from the Middle Atlantic Conference will still be played. Two MAC schools, FDU-Madison and the University of Scranton, have postponed all of their athletic events for the weekend. The Centennial Conference will play its weekend schedule as planned while the New Jersey Athletic Conference has cancelled all athletic events through the weekend.
Vs. King's College – Lost 14-13
Senior quarterback Tom Pierantozzi completed 11 of 24 passes for 115 yards and tossed a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to senior wide receiver Jim Pio to rally the King's College football team to a 14-13 victory over Moravian in Middle Atlantic Conference action.
The Greyhounds led 6-0 at halftime after a pair of second quarter field goals. Senior Marc Roesch connected on a career-long of 40 yards with 12:38 minutes left and senior Jim McIntyre made a 32-yarder with 11 seconds left in the half. Roesch also made his debut as the Greyhounds punter and was called on ten times. He averaged 29.1 yards per kick with a long of 42 yards and five downed inside the 20-yard line.
Moravian extended the lead to 13-0 with 1:33 left in the third quarter on a two-yard touchdown dive by sophomore tailback Tim Barlok. Barlok, who averaged over 60 yards per game last season, was held to six yards on seven carries by the King's defense. The Monarch defense held the entire Moravian running game to just 16 yards on 31 carries.
Pierantozzi, who was just five of 16 passing before King's first touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, connected on five of six passes for 66 yards in the Monarchs no-huddle scoring drive. Pierantozzi hit Pio from 20 yards out to make the score 13-7 in Moravian's favor. Pierantozzi had a 19 yard scramble for a first down in the drive.
After forcing the Greyhounds to punt on their next possession, King's junior Sean Frasier returned the punt 34 yards to set the Monarchs up on the Moravian 22-yard line. On a fourth and five play, Pierantozzi found Pio on a slant over the middle for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Freshman Bobby Nawrocki made his second extra-point of the afternoon to make the score 14-13 in King's favor.
King's forced the Greyhounds to punt on their next possession and turn the ball over on downs in the Greyhounds last possession of the game. The Monarchs had a chance to extend their lead with just under a minute and a half left in the game but the Greyhounds forced a fumble on the goal line, one of three turnovers Moravian forced in the game.
Junior quarterback Charlie Bowden led the Greyhound offense, completing 19 of 39 passes for 226 yards. Bowden's top target was junior wide receiver Jarod Rhinehart, who caught four passes for 90 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Jeff Lowry grabbed three passes for 28 yards while sophomore wideout Kevin Miltenberger grabbed three passes for 26 yards. Senior wide receiver Michael Abbate also had three receptions for 20 yards. Bowden completed a pass to nine different players in the game. Sophomore tailback Dave Darmofal led the Greyhounds on the ground with just 10 yards on five carries.
Defensively, junior linebacker Bill Engler, sophomore linebacker Steve Maslanek and sophomore cornerback John Panikiewsky each made ten tackles for the Greyhounds. Panikiewsky had two tackles for loss while Maslanek recovered on fumble. Engler, junior linebacker Vince Cowlishaw and junior defensive lineman Pat Mancini, who had seven tackles, each forced fumbles in the game. Junior linebacker John Cupples had seven tackles with one sack while Cowlishaw had eight tackles in his first career start. Senior safety Mike Wukitsch and junior defensive lineman Tom Blackledge each had fumble recoveries in the game. Blackledge and McIntyre each made five stops.
