The Mules, now 9-1 on the season, extended their winning streak to five straight games while snapping Moravian’s six-game winning streak. Muhlenberg will head to the NCAA Tournament for the first time next week as the Mules finished the Centennial Conference season as tri-champions after Johns Hopkins University defeated McDaniel College, 27-7, on Saturday and Muhlenberg earned the conference’s automatic bid on strength of schedule. The Greyhounds, now 7-3 on the season, must wait until Monday, November 18th to see if the team will receive a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships, a one-game playoff.

The Mules were unable to attempt the extra-point as the snap was fumbled by the center on the muddy Moravian field. Jones completed just four of 18 pass attempts on the sloppy field for 44 yards with Shay catching two of those passes for all 44 yards.

The Greyhounds, who gained just 125 yards on 56 plays in the game, would run their first play in Muhlenberg territory with just 11 seconds left in the first half but senior quarterback Charlie Bowden threw an interception, one of three in the game, on the next play. The Greyhounds had freshman kicker Nate Strohl line-up for22-yard field goal attempt but a bad snapped bounced to Strohl’s feet and he never attempted the kick.

The Greyhounds, now 6-2 overall and in the MAC, jumped on the scoreboard before the offense even took the field as senior cornerback Jarrod Pence picked up a fumble by Albright’s Adam Hubley and returned it 53-yards for a touchdown. Freshman kicker Nate Strohl added the extra-point to give Moravian a 7-0 with 12:25 to play in the first quarter. The Lions, who fall to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the MAC with the loss, turned the ball over on downs in their next possession and then the teams traded punts before the Greyhounds scored again. On the drive, Bowden picked up a pair of long third down conversions on with a ten-yard pass to sophomore fullback Bill Carasia when the Greyhounds needed nine yards and the other was a 21-yard scamper by Bowden on a third and 16. Carasia had 44 yards on 11 carries in the contest while senior tailback Josh Fick led the Moravian rushing attack, which gained 149 yards on 52 carries, with 50 yards on 18 carries.

Strohl did a planned short kickoff after the Bowden score and the Greyhounds came up with the ball after a Lion fumble at the Albright 35-yardline but the drive was ended when Albright’s Steve Butler intercepted his fourth pass of the season on the third place of the drive.

Moravian forced Albright to punt but Bowden was intercepted by the Lions’ Jack Byers, his fourth of the season, on the third play of the drive. The teams would trade punts in the game’s next four possessions but the Greyhounds got a break on their second punt as Albright’s Jason Scheerer fumbled the ball and Moravian junior linebacker Josh DiGiacomo came up with loose ball.

However, the Greyhounds turned the ball over on downs after Bowden completed an 18-yard pass to senior wideout Jarod Rhinehart on 4th and 19. On Albright’s next possession, Moravian forced a punt but Albright junior Burt Wenzel had a bad snap and never got the punt off before fumbling. Moravian senior linebacker Vince Cowlishaw covered the loose ball at the ten-yard line.

The Greyhounds, which controlled the ball for 33:54 despite only gaining 256 yards on 73 plays, would take four plays to capitalize on Albright’s sixth of seven turnovers (three interceptions and four fumbles) in the game with Bowden rushing for his second score of the game on a one-yard dive on a fourth down play. Strohl added his fourth extra-point of the game to give the Greyhounds a 28-7 lead with 40 seconds to play in the third quarter.
