2006 Review

THE SEASON: Moravian completed its 2006 season with an overall record of 4-6 including a 4-5 mark in the team’s last season as a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference.

THE COACH: Scot Dapp (West Chester ’73) completed his 20th season at Moravian, with a career record of 121-84-1 (.590). He entered the season in the top 50th in winning percentage among NCAA Division III active coaches. Dapp, who served as the president of the American Football Coaches Association in 2005, has earned Coach-of-the-Year honors from the MAC three times including Co-Coach of the Year in 1997 and has led the ’Hounds to two appearances in the NCAA playoffs, the ECAC Southeast Bowl game in 2002, the ECAC Southwest Bowl game in 2004 & 2005, winning the title in 2005.

BALANCED & EXPERIENCED ‘HOUNDS: Of the 81 players on the Moravian roster in 2006, 17weare freshmen, 35 were sophomores and 18 were juniors. There were 11 seniors on this season’s squad, and the Greyhounds returned 57 letterwinners and nine starters.

GREYHOUNDS IN THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC CONFERENCE: Beginning five seasons ago, the Middle Atlantic Conference became an 11-team conference instead of two separate leagues. Moravian was selected to finish sixth in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll this season. Wilkes University was selected to win the MAC and clinched the title and an automatic berth to the 2006 NCAA Division III Playoffs. This will be Moravian’s final year in the MAC as the Greyhounds are set to join the Centennial Conference in 2007.

THE MAC STATISTICAL RANKINGS: The Greyhounds were eighth in the MAC in total defense, allowing 324.0 yards per game. The squad was ninth in passing defense at 191.6 yards per game, and the defense is fourth in rushing yards allowed at 132.4. The Greyhounds were eighth in points allowed at 23.1 per game, and the squad was sixth in points scored per game at 17.7. Offensively, Moravian was 11th in the MAC at 244.1 yards per game. The Greyhounds were ranked seventh in rushing offense at 127.0 yards per game and tenth in passing offense at 117.1 yards per game. Moravian tied for eighth in turnover margin with a -0.50 per game average as the Greyhounds have committed 25 turnovers while forcing 20 turnovers. Moravian also led the MAC in kickoff returns with an average of 22.0 yards per return and red zone offense percentage at 86.4 percent (19-of-22). Individually, sophomore running back Tyler McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was fourth in the MAC in rushing with an average of 85.9 yards per game, and he was third in scoring at 5.8 points per game, third in touchdown scoring at 5.8 points per game and seventh in all-purpose yardage at 99.4 yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Marc Braxmeier (Center Valley, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was seventh in pass efficiency at 113.8, and he was tenth in passing yards per game at 72.4. Sophomore kicker Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) was fifth in kick scoring at 3.7 points per game, and he was second in field goals at 0.80 per contest (seven of ten) while sophomore punter Michael Voskian (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) was tenth in punting with an average of 33.2 yards per punt. Senior linebacker Cliff Garr (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) and junior linebacker Dan Edleman (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School) were tied for second in the MAC with 0.30 fumble recoveries per game. Sophomore linebacker Andrew Morrissey (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) was tied for first in the MAC in forced fumbles per game a 0.33, and he was fifth in tackles at 7.8 per contest. Garr was third in the MAC in tackles at 8.2 per game while sophomore linebacker Kevin McGorry (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was 19th in tackles with 6.5 per game. Freshman defensive back Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) was 36th at 5.2 tackles per contest while sophomore safety Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley HS) was tied for 42nd at 4.9 tackles per contest. Robinson was tied for ninth in interceptions with an average of 0.40 per game.

ALL-MIDDLE ATLANTIC CONFERENCE HONORS: Juniors tight end Kris Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and offensive lineman Jeff Kocsis (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) of the Moravian College football team were named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Second Team. Bisci led Moravian in receiving this fall with 27 receptions for 270 yards and a team high five touchdowns. In three seasons, Bisci has caught 54 passes for 545 yards and eight touchdowns for Moravian in his first three seasons, and he has added three catches for two-point conversions for a total of 54 career points. Kocsis, who started all ten games in 2006 at left guard, transferred to Moravian this fall from NCAA Division II East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. He helped the Greyhound offense average 127.0 yards per game on the ground and 117.1 yards per game in the air. Kocsis was on the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division All-Conference Second Team last season.

MILESTONE & RECORD WATCH: Moravian has two players moving up the record books. Senior wide receiver Shawn Martell (Bethlehe, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) completed his career with 79 catches (12th in school history) for 1,436 yards eighth all-time). Martell, who also had 38 career tackles, was seventh with 12 career touchdown receptions. He had a total of 13 career touchdowns. Sophomore kicker Brian Reckenbeil is third in school history with 17 career field goals, and he is sixth in extra-points with 41 and third all-time in kick scoring with 92 points. Reckenbeil needs four field goals to become the all-time leader, two extra-points to move up to fifth and 37 points to move into second.

THE QUARTERBACKS: Sophomore Marc Braxmeier, who had his first career start at Juniata College, completed 43 of 88 passes for 579 yards with four interceptions and five touchdowns for a 113.79 pass efficiency rating. Braxmeier, who was sacked 11 times, added 25 yards on 26 carries. Freshman quarterback Ryan Rempe (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley HS), who made his first career start against FDU-Florham, completed 34 of 68 passes for 306 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions, one thrown on a wide receiver reverse against Widener University, for a 79.86 pass efficiency rating. Rempe added for 28 yards on 25 carries, and he was sacked ten times. Junior Brad Swartz (Temple, PA/Muhlenberg HS), who moved to defensive back, completed 19 of 39 passes for 282 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for a 107.66 pass efficiency rating. Swartz was sacked eight times this season but did have a one-yard touchdown run and a long run of 15 yards.

IN THE BACKFIELD: In the backfield, sophomore tailback Tyler McCambridge had 773 yards and seven touchdowns on 171 carries while sophomore running back Tyler de Rouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS) has 261 yards and three touchdowns on 52 carries despite missing the final seven games with an injury. Sophomore full back Morgan de Rouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS) had 142 yards on 39 carries while senior tailback Marc Panepinto (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS), who missed eight games with an injury, added 49 yards on eight rushing attempts. Senior fullback Joe Costanzo (Barnstead, NH/Bow HS & Tilton School) added 28 yards on 12 attempts while junior tailback Mark Peters (Mendham, NJ/Mendham HS) had five yards on two carries after switching from linebacker back to running back.

THE WIDE RECEIVERS: The Greyhounds had ten different players catch a pass this season led by junior tight end Kris Bisci, who had 27 catches for 270 yards and five touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Shawn Martell caught 20 passes for 391 yards and two scores. Sophomore running back Tyler McCambridge had ten catches for 90 yards and a touchdown while junior wide receiver Sean Hill (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing HS), who was converted to the position from quarterback during the week leading up to the season opener, had 12 receptions for 146 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Tyler Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) had nine receptions for 143 yards despite missing four games with an injury while freshman tight end Brian Dencker (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) had six receptions for 50 yards. Sophomore fullback Morgan de Rouen added four receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown this season while junior wide receiver Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) had three catches for 12 yards and sophomore running back Tyler de Rouen has three catches for 17 yards. Senior fullback Joe Costanzo has caught three passes for 18 yards.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Leading the way for the backfield was a solid offensive line led by returning starters senior Andrew Remsing (Bath, PA/Northampton HS) and sophomore Timothy McBride (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township HS). Junior Dave Kircher (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS), who began 2005 as a starter for Moravian before an injury in the fourth game of the year sidelined him for the remainder of the season, also gave experience to the Moravian line. Junior Eric Adams (Dover, NJ/Dover HS) and junior transfer Jeff Kocsis earned the other two starting positions. Kocsis was a two-year starter for NCAA Division II East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. Sophomores Wes Harpel (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS) and Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) also saw action.

DEFENSIVE FRONT: Senior defensive tackle Alex Smith-Constantine (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus HS) led the Moravian defensive front with 46 tackles with nine for loss, a half a sack, a pass break-up, a forced fumble and two blocked extra-points, one each against Delaware Valley College and Lebanon Valley College. Sophomore defensive end Don Maxwell (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston HS) added 30 tackles this season including four and a half for loss, one and a half sacks, a pass break-up and a fumble return of 31 yards for a touchdown against FDU-Florham while senior defensive end Nick Feo (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) had 25 tackles, six and a half tackles for loss, four sacks, three pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and forced a fumble. Sophomore defensive tackle Robert Kadel (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren HS) contributed seven tackles with one for loss while senior defensive tackle Michael Liccketto (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights HS) had six tackles this season with a tackle for loss, a sack and blocked a field goal against Widener University. Sophomore defensive end Douglas Bocchino (Madison, NJ/Madison HS) had seven tackles and a pass break-up after switching from tight end. Sophomore defensive lineman Michael Cancelliere (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) contributed six tackles with half a tackle for loss and half a sack while junior defensive end Arturo Duran (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood HS) had five tackles with a half tackle for loss. Sophomore defensive tackle Mike Nagle (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace HS) added two tackles while sophomore Michael Ientile (Manchester, NJ/Manchester Township HS) had two tackles and recovered a fumble.

THE LINEBACKER CORPS: Senior Cliff Garr led the team with 82 tackles with four and a half for loss, and he added two sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception with a return of 46 yards versus FDU-Florham and three fumble recoveries. Sophomore linebacker Andrew Morrissey had 70 tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, three forced fumbles, two pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and an interception with a return of 15 yards against Lycoming College. Sophomore linebacker Kevin McGorry contributed 65 tackles with five and a half tackles for loss, a forced fumble, two pass break-ups and an interception with a 25-yard return against King’s College while freshman linebacker Jayson Williams (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood HS) had 33 tackles, seven tackles for loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass break-ups. Junior linebacker Dan Edleman had 21 tackles with three and a half for loss, a pass break-up and three fumble recoveries while freshman linebacker Daniel Merker (Leonardo, NJ/Middletown South HS) added nine stops. Freshman linebacker Derek Protasiewicz (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park HS) had eight tackles with one tackle for loss while junior linebacker Andy Fusco (Collegeville, PA/St. Pius X HS) had seven stops.

THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD: In the defensive backfield, freshman cornerback Brad Bodine added 52 tackles including 41 solo stops to go with a tackle for loss, one sack, two interceptions, two pass break-ups and a forced fumble while sophomore strong safety Carl Robinson contributed 49 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack, four interceptions and three pass break-ups. Sophomore defensive back Eric Brinkerhoff (Boonton, NJ/Boonton HS) had 42 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, four passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery while junior free safety/linebacker Zach Santiago (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had a 33 tackles, four and a half tackles for loss, two a sacks, four pass break-ups and a forced fumble. Senior cornerback Israel Aguila (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), who missed the final four games with an injury, had 18 tackles, a tackle for loss and five passes defended while senior defensive back Justin Klement (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) contributed 20 tackles, half a tackle for loss, half a sack, three pass break-ups, a forced fumble and a blocked punt against Juniata College. Sophomore cornerback Ryan Andrew (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) added four tackles.

KICKING GAME: Sophomore Brian Reckenbeil was eight-for-11 on field goal attempts this season with a career long of 42 yards versus King’s College, and he was 13-of-17 on extra-points. Reckenbeil averaged 54.2 yards per kickoff as well, making opponents receive the kickoff at their own 11-yard line. Sophomore punter Michael Voskian averaged 33.2 yards per punt on 45 kicks with 11 fair caught, ten inside the 20-yard line and one blocked. Voskian’s longest punt of the season is 46 yards versus Muhlenberg College. Sophomore Bruce Krell (Tuscarora, PA/Tamaqua HS) punted once for 24 yards this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Sophomore wide receiver Tyler Hersch averaged 37.8 yards per kickoff return on four returns with a 92-yard touchdown versus King’s College. The return was Moravian’s third for a touchdown of more than 90 yards since 2002. Senior Marc Panepinto averaged 42.5 yards per kickoff return after a 72-yard runback on his second return in the season opener before being knocked out with an injury. Freshman running back Edward Savoth (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) had six kickoff returns for 113 yards with a long of 37 yards at Juniata College, and he had seven tackles and a blocked extra-point against Wilkes University. Freshman quarterback Ryan Rempe returned five punts for an average of 8.2 yards and a long return of 14 yards and one kickoff for 35 yards while sophomore running back Tyler McCambridge had two punt returns for 32 yards. Senior wide receiver Shawn Martell returned ten punts for 62 yards, two kickoffs for 46 yards and added nine tackles. Sophomore running back Morgan de Rouen made seven tackles on special teams and returned four kickoffs for 28 yards while junior wide receiver Allan Fatzinger had six tackles and a forced fumble and junior wide receiver Sean Hill had four tackles. Fatzinger added two kickoff returns for 36 yards while Hill returned 13 kickoffs for 292 yards including a 56 yard return. Sophomore wide receiver Antuan Dixon (Kansas City, MO/St. Mark's HS) returned six kickoffs for 169 yards with a long of 46 yards at Lebanon Valley College.

OVERTIME ‘HOUNDS: Moravian has played a total of seven overtime games since the NCAA instituted the rule for the 1996 season and is 5-2 all-time in the extra-session. The 2006 season was the sixth time since 1996 that the Greyhounds did not play at least one overtime game.

WINNING WAYS: Moravian had 11 consecutive winning seasons—all under Coach Scot Dapp, from 1987 to 1997 and has had 15 winning seasons in Dapp’s 20 years. The 11-straight winning seasons is the longest in school history. Dapp ranks third among Greyhound coaches in winning percentage.

McCambridge, Braxmeier, Martell, Bisci, Feo, Gro, Klement, Panepinto, Fatzinger, Andrew, Arifaj, Henrie, Kadel, Reckenbeil, and Robinson were all named to the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Fall Academic Honor Roll. Martell, McCambridge and Reckenbeil were also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team.
