A fourth place finish at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships for the second straight year and another winning season highlighted the year 2000 for the Moravian College golf team under the direction of head coach John Makuvek.
With the 3-2 mark this spring, Makuvek moves within ten victories of 300 in his career. Makuvek, who finished his 33rd season as head coach, has led the Greyhounds to a 290-186 overall record, three undefeated seasons and three Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.
The Greyhounds had a young team this spring with six freshmen, a sophomore and a senior on the squad. Moravian also had one tournament and seven matches cancelled this spring due to rain and snow.
Newcomer Sean Alden (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock HS) led Moravian at the MAC Championships as he tied for 15th among the 70 golfers in the tournament. Alden had a 54-hole total of 250 at the MAC Championships and he posted his best round of the season at the Elizabethtown College Blue Jay Classic with a round of 82 at the Country Club of Hershey. For the year, Alden average 85.1 strokes per round.
Freshman Jason Pozniak (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock HS) was second for the Greyhounds and 32nd overall at the MAC Championships with a total of 261. Pozniak, who finished the season with an average of 85.7, tallied a season low 82 at the Moravian Invitational at Southmoore Golf Course.
Sophomore Ricky Gower (Bath/Bethlehem Catholic HS), who placed seventh in the MAC Championships as a freshman, was tied for 38th at the 2000 MAC Championships with a total of 265. Gower was the only Greyhound to play in every tournament and match this season and he averaged 85.9 strokes per round with a season low 78 in a tri-match at Delaware Valley College with the University of Scranton. Gower was named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll this spring.
Senior Geoff Hood (Willow Grove/Upper Moreland HS) was also named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll and he was tied for 34th at the MAC Championships with a 54-hole score of 264. Hood completed his final season at Moravian with an average of 89.3 strokes a round and a low of 84 against Delaware Valley and Scranton.
Freshman Brian Costa (Boonton, NJ/Mountain Lakes HS) rounded out the Greyhounds that competed at the MAC Championships. Costa tied for 46th with a total of 269. He finished the year with an average of 89.7 strokes per round and his season low of 87 was at the Moravian Invitational.
Freshman Mike Schlamp (Nazareth/Nazareth HS) averaged 87.5 shots per round in his first season with the Greyhounds. Schlamp had an 81 in the match with Delaware Valley and Scranton. Classmate Charles Tice (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) averaged 87.8 strokes in four rounds this season with a low of 80 in the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational played on the Weyhill Course at the Saucon Valley Country Club, home of the 2000 Senior PGA Championship. Freshman Anthony Gill (Wilkes-Barre/Hanover Area HS) rounded out the Moravian squad with an average of 90.0 over two rounds with a low of 85 versus Delaware Valley and Scranton.
With seven players scheduled to return for the 2000-01 season, Makuvek and the Greyhounds will look to challenge for their fourth MAC Championship.
