After finishing fourth the last three years, the Moravian College golf team improved its finish at the 2001 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships by placing second behind the play of the sophomore and junior classes.
The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach John Makuvek for the 34th season, posted another winning season in dual meet action with a 7-1 record. Moravian’s only loss was to King’s College on the lowest individual round after the two schools tied at 320. Moravian did not have a senior on this season’s squad.
Sophomore Mike Hersch (Macungie/Emmaus HS) paced Moravian this season. He placed seventh at the MAC Championships with a 54-hole total of 241. Hersch, who led the Greyhounds with a stroke average of 79.1 over 14 rounds, earned MAC First Team All-Conference honors for his top ten finish. Hersch’s best round of the season was a 75 that he fired at the Moravian Fall Invitational and the Franklin & Marshall College Fall Invitational.
Sophomore Jason Pozniak (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock HS) placed 12th at the MAC Championship with a score of 247 to earn MAC All-Conference Second Team accolades. Pozniak, who played 13 rounds for the Greyhounds, had a season scoring average of 84.3 and a season-low round of 78 at the Moravian Fall Invitational.
Freshman Brian Kurylo (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) played just the spring half of the season for Moravian but had an impact as he finished 18th at the MAC Championships with a score of 251. Kurylo, who averaged 83.4 per round, was named MAC Second Team All-Conference for his performance. His best round, a 78, came in a tri-match with FDU-Madison and Centenary (NJ) College.
Junior Sean Carney (Ariel/Wallenpaupack HS) placed 31st at the MAC Championships with a 54-hole total of 259. Carney was second on the Moravian squad this season with an average of 82.8 strokes per round over 13 rounds and he had a season-low score of 78 at the Moravian Fall Invitational.
Sophomore Sean Alden (Tunkhannock/Tunkhannock HS) also fired a 259 to place 32nd at the MAC Championships for the Greyhounds. Alden had a season scoring average of 86.1 and a season best score of 80 at the Moravian Spring Invitational.
Junior Ricky Gower (Bath/Bethlehem Catholic HS) averaged 86.0 a round for the Greyhounds and fired a 79 at the Moravian Fall Invitational. Sophomore Anthony Gill (Wilkes-Barre/Hanover Area HS) averaged 82.8 this season with a low of 81 at the Moravian Spring Invitational while classmate Charles Tice (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) averaged 84.0 strokes per round with a season-low of 81 at the Muhlenberg College Fall Classic.
Sophomore Mike Schlamp (Nazareth/Nazareth Area HS) averaged 84.9 shots per round this season with a season-best round of 79 in a five-team match at Ursinus College. Freshman Jamison Licausi (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain HS) rounded out the Moravian squad with an average of 85.0 and a season best round of 81 at the Moravian Spring Invitational.
With the entire team returning next season, the Greyhounds will look to challenge for their fourth MAC title. The squad will also be looking to get coach Makuvek his 300th win as he heads into the season with 297 career victories.
