2001-02 Review

A third place finish at the Middle Atlantic Conference Golf Championships and head coach John Makuvek’s 300th career victory highlighted the 2001-02 season for the Moravian College golf team. Makuvek has been Moravian’s head coach for the last 35 seasons and he has a record of 300 wins and 189 losses. The milestone victory came over rival Muhlenberg College by one stroke in the Lehigh Valley Championships.

The Greyhounds were third of 14 teams with a team score of 480 after the first 27 holes of the MAC Championships when rains cancelled the second day of the tournament. Moravian did have four MAC All-Stars for placing in the top 20 of the tournament.

Junior Jason Pozniak (Tunkhannock, PA/ Tunkhannock HS) and sophomore Jamison Licausi (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mountain HS) were named First Team All-Stars for placing in the top ten with 27-hole scores of 118. Pozniak was seventh overall and Licausi was eighth based on individual nine-hole scores. Pozniak finished the season with a stroke average of 84.2 and he had his best round of the year with a 79 at Saucon Valley Country Club in a tri-match with Albright College and Lebanon Valley College. Licausi led the Greyhounds with an 81.3 stroke average this season and he played all but one round for Moravian. Licausi fired a season low of 77 at the Brookside Country Club in a tri-match with DeSales University and Ursinus College.

Senior Sean Carney (Lake Ariel, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) and sophomore Brian Kurylo (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) finished in the top 20 at the MAC Championships with 27-hole scores of 122.  Carney was 19th overall while Kurylo was 20th as the duo earned MAC All-Star Second Team honors. Carney averaged 83.0 strokes per round in his final season and he had the teams lowest round of the year, firing a 76 at the East Stroudsburg University Invitational last fall. Kurylo had an 84.0 stroke average this season and fired a low round of 81 at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational.

Freshman Todd Solecitto (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) also competed in the 2002 MAC Championships and had a 27-hole score of 126. Solecitto was second on the Greyhound squad with an 82.3 per round stroke average and he had a season low round of 79 at the Lebanon Valley Invitational.

Other golfers for the Greyhounds this season included juniors Charles Tice (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) and Sean Alden (Tunkhannock, PA/ Tunkhannock HS) and senior Ricky Gower (Bath, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS). Tice averaged 85.2 shots per round with a low of 81 at the ESU Invitational while Alden averaged 85.3 strokes with a low score of 77 at ESU. Gower closed out his Moravian career with a stroke average of 85.9 this season and a low round of 82 at the Moravian Spring Invitational at Southmoore Golf Course. Alden and Gower were both members of the MAC All-Academic squad.

Junior Jerry Coveney (Plymouth Meeting, PA/LaSalle College HS) played two rounds for Moravian this year with an average of 90 while sophomore Todd James (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) played one round with a score of 97.

Coach Makuvek should have another solid team for the 2002-03 season with eight players back including three that earn MAC All-Star honors this year.
