2002-03 Review

The Moravian College golf team had another outstanding year with the squad placing third at the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships, three players earning All-Conference honors and the team finishing in the top five in its final seven tournaments of the year.

The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach John Makuvek, posted a team score of 961 in the two-day, 54-hole MAC Championship Tournament played at the Shawnee Country Club. Moravian finished second as a squad at the Lebanon Valley College, Moravian Spring and East Stroudsburg University Fall Invitationals, and the Greyhounds were third at the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational and the Lehigh Valley Championships.

Freshman Dustin McCormick (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) led Moravian this spring, and he earned First Team All-Conference honors with a score of 235, which tied him for sixth place at the MAC Championships. McCormick had rounds of 75, 80 and 80 on the par-72 course at Shawnee. McCormick averaged 78.0 strokes per round for the Greyhounds this year while playing all 17 possible rounds during the year. McCormick won the Lebanon Valley Invitational with a round of 75, and he posted a season low 18-hole total of 73 on the second day of the Glenmaura Invitational.

Juniors Jamison Licausi (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mountain HS) and Brian Kurylo (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) each earned Second Team All-Conference accolades with finishes in the top 20 at the MAC Championships. Licausi tied for 13th with a score of 239 and Kurylo was tied for 17th at 241. Licausi was a member of the All-Conference First Team in 2002 while Kurylo has been on the Second Team the last two years. Licausi averaged 81.0 strokes per round this spring with low of 76 at the Glenmaura Invitational while Kurylo, who also played every round possible this season, averaged 80.6 shots per 18-holes with a low round of 71 also at the Glenmaura Invitational.

Seniors Charles Tice (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) and Jason Pozniak (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock HS) also participated in the 2003 MAC Championships for Moravian. Tice tied for 25th with a tournament total of 246 while Pozniak was tied for 32nd among the 69 golfers in the field with a score of 250. Tice averaged 81.2 strokes per round this spring, and he fired a season low round of 77 at the Glenmaura Invitational. Pozniak posted a season average of 82.7 with a low score of 75 at the Susquehanna University Invitational last fall.

Sophomore Todd Solecitto (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) also averaged 82.7 strokes per round this year for the Greyhounds with low of 80 at the Moravian Fall Invitational. Senior Jerry Coveney (Plymouth Meeting, PA/LaSalle College HS) and freshman John Donofrio (Easton, PA/Easton HS) each had averages of 84.0 per round this year with Coveney firing an 82 at the East Stroudsburg Invitational and Donofrio posting an 81 at the Moravian Spring Invitational.

Freshman Larry Abrams (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock HS) played a pair of rounds with an average score of 80, including a 76 at the Moravian Fall Invitational, while freshman Elliot Joseph (Center Valley, PA/Parkland HS) and sophomore Brad Clark (Norristown, PA/Methacton HS) averaged 87.0 and 87.7 respectively per round this year.

The Greyhounds are slated to have the majority of their team back in 2003-04 as the squad will look for its first MAC title since tying for the title in 1997.
