2004-05 Review

The 2004-05 Moravian College golf team placed second of seven schools at the 2005 Commonwealth Conference Championships. The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach John Makuvek for the 37th season, won six tournaments throughout the season and placed in the top five in 13 of 16 tournaments.

Freshman Bryan Ott (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was named the Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team. Junior Dustin McCormick (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) also was named to the All-Conference First Team. Ott shot a 157 on two rounds on a par 72 Hershey Country Club East Course at the Conference Championships. He finished his first-year for the Greyhounds with an average of 78.9 stokes per round with a season low score of 71, which tied him at first place individually at the Moravian Spring Invitational at Southmoore Golf Course. Ott went on to win medalist honors on the tiebreaker. McCormick shot a 159 at the Commonwealth Championships. He finished the season with an average of 79.2 strokes per round with a low score of 71 at the Susquehanna Fall Invitational at Edgewood-in-the-Pines Golf Course. He won first place at this match.

At the Commonwealth Conference Championships, sophomore Brian Bergstol (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) finished in a tie for 12th place with a tournament score of 165 after a second round score of 82. Sophomore Thad Miller (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) was tied for 20th at 170 after a second 18-hole round of 88 while junior John Donofrio (Easton, PA/Easton HS) finished in a tie for 26th with a two-day score of 171. Donofrio had an 85 on the second day of the tournament. Bergstol had a season average of 76.6 strokes per round with a low score of 70 at the Moravian Fall Invitational at Southmoore Golf Course. He made it to Moravian’s record books having the second lowest average. Miller sported an average of 81.6 with a low round of 75 also at the Moravian Fall Invitational while Donofrio averaged 81.9 strokes per round with a 78 at the Moravian Spring Invitational.

Senior Todd Solecitto (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) averaged 82.6 this season with a score of 74 at the Moravian Spring Invitational. Freshman Brian Scofield (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) played eight rounds in his debut season. He averaged 85.1 strokes per round while junior Scott Severino (Milford, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional HS) averaged 83.8 in five rounds this season. Sophomore John Gilbert (Allentown, PA/Freedom HS) played five rounds and averaged 83.0 strokes per round. Sophomore Matt Tomasic (Berlin, NJ/St. Augustine Prep HS) averaged 84.0 over two rounds. Junior Andrew Styer (Norristown, PA/Malvern Prep HS) sported an average of 92.0 strokes per round. Freshmen Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg HS) and Matt Hagerty (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) posted averages of 78.5 and 78.0, respectively, in their debut season.

Coach Makuvek returns all but one player next year that will try to win Moravian its first conference title since 1997.
