2006-07 Review

The 2006-07 Moravian College golf team placed second of seven schools at the 2007 Commonwealth Conference Championships played at the Shawnee Country Club. Moravian had a team score of 915 in the two-day, 54-hole tournament while Susquehanna University won the team title with a score of 881 to earn the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach John Makuvek for the 39th season, won two tournaments throughout the season and placed in the top five in eight of 15 tournaments.

Leading the Greyhounds was senior Brian Bergstol (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) who was named the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Scholar-Athlete for the sport of golf. At the Commonwealth Conference Championships, Bergstol defended his individual championship, placing first for the second straight year with a five-under par total of 211. Bergstol also earned the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season, and earned a spot on the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team for finishing in the top five. Bergstol ended the year with a school record 71.9 average, and completed his career with a school best 75.4 career stroke average.

Junior Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) earned a position on the Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team with a two-day score of 228, which placed him ninth at the Commonwealth Conference Championships. Whitman ended out the season with an 80.5 stroke average including his lowest round of 74 at the Moravian College Fall Invitational. Junior Matt Hegarty (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) finished 15th in the Commonwealth Conference Championships with a score of 235, and also had an 80.5 stroke average on the year. Hegarty’s lowest score came against DeSales University when he shot a 74.

Senior Thad Miller (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) had a 243 at the Commonwealth Conference Championships which earned him a tie for 23rd place while shooting an 82.3 average on the year including a lowest round of 80 at the Moravian College Fall Invitational. Freshmen Steve Labiak (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) earned a tie for 29th place in the Commonwealth Conference Championships by shooting a 247. Labiak had an 83.5 average on the year including his lowest round of 79 coming at the Moravian College Fall Invitational.

Bergstol, Miller, and senior John Gilbert (Allentown, PA/Freedom HS) were named to the 2007 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor Roll

Coach Makuvek returns more than half of his team as the team prepares to begin competition in the new Landmark Conference.
