1998 Review

For the 11th straight year, the Greyhound golf team led by head coach John Makuvek had a winning season. Moravian won six of nine dual matches on the year and placed in the top five in two tournaments including a fourth place finish at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.

Leading last year’s team was sophomore Mike Quirk (Allentown/Parkland HS) with a stroke average of 79.7. He tied for third place at the MAC Championships. Quirk’s best round of the season was a 77 at Saucon Valley Country Club against Allentown and Ursinus.

Senior Joe Braunstein (Yardley/Pennsbury HS) averaged 81.8 per round with a season best 77 at the Moravian Invitational at Southmoore Golf Course. He was tied for 13th at the MAC Championships.

Classmate Noel Naughton (Old Tappan, NJ/Bergen Catholic HS) shot 84.5 per 18 holes. His season best of 81 also came at the Moravian Invitational.

Newcomer Kevin Lewis (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs HS) averaged 85.8 strokes per round with a low score of 78 at Delaware Valley.

Senior Chris Gulini (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) shot 86 per round while junior Roy Lee (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna HS) averaged 86.9.

Freshman Mike Muller (Drexel Hill/Monsignor Bonner) averaged 87.3 stoles per round. Lee and Muller tied for 31st at the MAC Championships while Lewis was 49th.

Freshman Rich Flederbach (North Honesdale/Honesdale HS) averaged 90.8 per round in his first season as a Greyhound. His best round was 86 at FDU-Madison.

Following a fall season that usually features three to five tournaments, the Greyhounds’ spring season gets underway in March. Moravian plays its home matches at the Saucon Valley Country Club par-72 Grace Course, one of the three courses at the nationally-renowned Saucon Valley facility. The Saucon Valley Country Club "Old Course" was the site of the 1992 U.S. Senior Open.
