1999 Review

An undefeated dual season and a fourth place finish at the 1999 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships highlighted the spring season for the Moravian College golf team under the direction of head coach John Makuvek. The undefeated season is the third of the 1990s under Makuvek, who has been head coach for the past 32 years. He has a career mark of 287 wins and 184 losses.

Freshman Ricky Gower (Bath/Bethlehem Catholic HS) paced the Greyhounds this spring, averaging 82.5 strokes per round. He finished second at the Moravian Invitational with his best round of the season, a 76, and Gower was the top Greyhound finisher and seventh place overall at the MAC Championships with a 54-hole total of 246.

Senior Brian Longley (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park HS) had his best season at Moravian this year with an 83.5 stroke average per round. Longley tied for third at the Lehigh Valley Invitational with a 77 against Lafayette College, Lehigh University and Muhlenberg College. He finished ninth overall at the MAC Championships with a 54-hole total of 249.

Junior Mike Quirk (Allentown/Parkland HS) averaged 84.0 strokes a round and had a pair of 78s during the season. He tied with teammate Karl Searing (Tamaqua/Tamaqua Area HS) for the team’s best round of 85 at the season opening Elizabethtown Invitational. Searing, a sophomore completed the year with an 89.0 stroke average. Searing had a 54-hole total of 273 and was 51st at the MAC Championships.

Sophomore Kevin Lewis (Gansevroot, NY/Saratoga Springs HS) was averaging 85.0 strokes per round and fired three consecutive rounds of 84 when a leg injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

Junior Brian Fry (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had a 54-hole total of 260 to tie for 29th at the MAC Championships. Fry had an 88.0 stroke average for the year with a season best round of 83 at FDU-Madison.

Junior Geoff Hood (Willow Grove/Upper Moreland HS) fired a 275 at the MAC Championships and had a stroke average of 91.9 for the year.

Two other golfers hit the links this spring as part of the Moravian squad. Senior Roy Lee (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna HS) shot rounds of 92 and 95 in his only action while sophomore Rich Flederbach (Honesdale/Honesdale HS) fired an 87 in his only round of the spring.

Fry was named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll at the end of the season.
