2006 Review

The 2006 Moravian College men’s lacrosse team continued to show improvement in just its third season as a varsity sport. The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Fran Meagher, suffered through injuries to two of their top offensive players very early in season and still had a 4-12 overall record and a 2-8 record in Middle Atlantic Conference action.

Junior midfielder Ken Blom (Rochelle Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic HS) led Moravian with 21 goals and 15 assists for 36 points including five man-up goals to go with 35 ground balls and 23 of 72 face-off wins while junior midfielder TJ Hirsch (Putnum Valley, NY/Walter Panas HS) had 24 goals and ten assists for 34 points this season. Sophomore midfielder Aaron Satterfield (Mt. Arlington, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) had two goals, seven assists, 41 ground balls and won three of four face-offs.

Freshman midfielder Bradley McVaugh (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) scored four goals and three assists, and he added 28 ground balls while winning five of 11 face-offs. Freshman midfielder Brian Cleaver (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) had six goals to go with 27 ground balls while freshman midfielder Kyle Gardner (Emmaus, PA/Perkiomen Prep HS) found the back of the cage six times and added one assist.

Junior attack Daniel Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) scored a goal and an assist before an injury sidelined him for the season in the second match of the year. Freshman midfielder James Messler (Allentown, PA/Emmaus HS) had an assist and 17 ground balls while junior midfielder Tristan Flis (Harleysville, PA/North Penn HS) scored two goals and one assist. Freshman midfielder Neil Heimsoth (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) added an assist.

Freshman defender Steven Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell HS), who missed the final three matches of the year with an injury, had 37 ground balls this spring while sophomore defender David Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS) added 41 ground balls. Senior long-stick midfielder Rocco DiPoalo (Keyport, NJ/Academy of Marine Science) had one assist, won 12 of 40 face-offs and added 20 ground balls while sophomore defender Adam Melroy (Newton, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) had 30 ground balls.

Freshman keeper Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) had a 3-10 mark with an 11.43 goals-against average, 155 saves and 38 ground balls in 698 minutes of action this season. Sophomore goalie Peter Coutros (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) had a 1-2 record with an 11.17 goals-against average and 53 saves in 263 minutes of action.

Blom and Flis earned spots on the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Coach Meagher should return most of his team for the 2007 season when the Greyhounds look to challenge for one of the six berths in the MAC Tournament and the chance to earn the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championships.
