The 2006 Moravian College men’s lacrosse team continued to show
improvement in just its third season as a varsity sport. The Greyhounds,
under the direction of head coach Fran Meagher, suffered
through injuries to two of their top offensive players very early in season
and still had a 4-12 overall record and a 2-8 record in Middle Atlantic
Conference action.
Junior midfielder Ken Blom (Rochelle Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic
HS) led Moravian with 21 goals and 15 assists for 36 points including
five man-up goals to go with 35 ground balls and 23 of 72 face-off wins
while junior midfielder TJ Hirsch (Putnum Valley, NY/Walter Panas
HS) had 24 goals and ten assists for 34 points this season. Hirsch,
who had seven man-up goals, led the team with 87 ground balls, and he
won 104 of 208 face-offs.
Freshman attack Jason Tosches (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor
Plainsboro South HS) netted 21 goals and added eight assists
for 29 points to go with 26 ground balls and three man-up goals while
freshman attack Christopher Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS)
found the back of the cage 13 times and added one assist for 14 points
to go with 14 ground balls.
Freshman attack Keith Danner (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland HS)
contributed ten goals and ten assists for 20 points, and he had 14 ground
balls while junior attack Nick Cacciutti (Media, PA/Haverford
School), who missed the majority of the season due to an injury,
had four goals in the two matches he played. Sophomore midfielder Aaron
Satterfield (Mt. Arlington, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) had two goals,
seven assists, 41 ground balls and won three of four face-offs.
Freshman midfielder Bradley McVaugh (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge
HS) scored four goals and three assists, and he added 28 ground
balls while winning five of 11 face-offs. Freshman midfielder Brian
Cleaver (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) had six goals to go with
27 ground balls while freshman midfielder Kyle Gardner (Emmaus,
PA/Perkiomen Prep HS) found the back of the cage six times and
added one assist.
Junior attack Daniel Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) scored
a goal and an assist before an injury sidelined him for the season in
the second match of the year. Freshman midfielder James Messler
(Allentown, PA/Emmaus HS) had an assist and 17 ground balls while
junior midfielder Tristan Flis (Harleysville, PA/North Penn HS)
scored two goals and one assist. Freshman midfielder Neil Heimsoth
(Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) added an assist.
Freshman defender Steven Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell
HS), who missed the final three matches of the year with an injury,
had 37 ground balls this spring while sophomore defender David
Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS) added 41 ground balls. Senior
long-stick midfielder Rocco DiPoalo (Keyport, NJ/Academy of Marine
Science) had one assist, won 12 of 40 face-offs and added 20
ground balls while sophomore defender Adam Melroy (Newton, NJ/Pope
John XXIII HS) had 30 ground balls.
Senior defender Greg Hawzen (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS)
saw action in just the first and last matches of the year due to an injury
while freshman defender Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville
HS) had nine ground balls in limited action.
Freshman keeper Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS)
had a 3-10 mark with an 11.43 goals-against average, 155 saves and 38
ground balls in 698 minutes of action this season. Sophomore goalie Peter
Coutros (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) had a 1-2 record
with an 11.17 goals-against average and 53 saves in 263 minutes of action.
Blom and Flis earned spots on the Middle
Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor
Roll.
Coach Meagher should return most of his team for the
2007 season when the Greyhounds look to challenge for one of the six berths
in the MAC Tournament and the chance to earn the conference’s automatic
berth to the NCAA Division III Championships.
