2007 Review

The 2007 Moravian College men’s lacrosse team continued to show improvement in just its fourth season as a varsity sport. The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Fran Meagher had a 2-14 overall record and a 2-8 record in Middle Atlantic Conference action this year.

Leading the Greyhounds was senior midfielder T.J. Hirsch (Putnum Valley, NY/Walter Panas HS) who had 17 goals and 15 assists for 32 points, including 57 shots, and three man-up goals. Hirsch was also a national leader in face-offs with a 162-278 face off record for a .583 face off percentage. Sophomore attack Keith Danner (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland HS) contributed 18 goals and 10 assists for 28 points to go along with 21 ground balls and 63 shots.

Sophomore attack Jason Tosches (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South HS) had 19 goals and two assists for 21 points, with three man-up goals and 78 shots while senior attack Daniel Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) put up 61 shots, 14 goals and four assists for 18 points on the season. Senior midfielder Ken Blom (Rochelle Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic HS) had 11 goals with six assists for 17 points to go along with 49 shots, three man-up goals and 16 ground balls. Blom was injured late in the season and unable to play in the last few matches of the season.

Freshmen midfielder Cruz Sierra (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional HS) contributed 29 shots, 36 ground balls, five goals and five assists for 10 points, while sophomore attack Christopher Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) had 28 shots, four goals and one assist for five points. Freshmen midfielder Kevin Smart (Drexel Hill, PA/Archbishop Carroll) put up four goals with one assist for five points, to go along with 25 shots, 15 ground balls, and a 20-47 face off record for a .426 face off percentage.

Freshmen midfielder Dylan Maher (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludowe HS) contributed one goal off of three shots and seven ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Andrew Miranda (Schnecksville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) also had one goal and three shots as well. Junior defender David Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS) had one assist to go along with 32 ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Brian Cleaver (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) had six shots and 37 ground balls on the year.

Sophomore defender Steven Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell HS) was able to scoop up 26 ground balls this year while freshmen defender Matthew Deasy (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth Academy) was able to get 17 ground balls of his own. Sophomore defender Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) was able to grab 22 ground balls while junior defender Zak Goldstein (Wayne, PA/The Shipley School) was able to get 14 ground balls as well.

Freshmen Joshua Chase (Asbury, NJ/North Hunterdon HS), senior Rocco DiPoalo (Keyport, NJ/Academy of Marine Science HS), and sophomore James Messler (Allentown, PA/Emmaus HS) all contributed on defense with Chase grabbing 10 ground balls, DiPoalo grabbing eight and Messler getting seven ground balls of his own.

Sophomore goalkeeper Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) had 177 goals against for a 11.69 goals against average, 219 saves, for a .553 save percentage and 82 ground balls in 908 minutes of play this year. Freshmen goalkeeper David Crawford (Asbury, NJ/North Hunterdon HS) had 10 goals against, six saves, and one ground ball in 42 minutes of action.

Blom, Danni, Reckenbeil, and Goldstein were all named to the 2007 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Coach Meagher should return most of his team for the 2008 season when the Greyhounds look to challenge for a berth in the new Landmark Conference Tournament.
