2008 Review

The 2008 Moravian College men’s lacrosse team continued to show improvement in just its fifth season as a varsity sport. The Greyhounds, under the direction of head coach Fran Meagher, had a 4-12 overall record and a 0-6 record in the newly created Landmark Conference this season.

Leading the Greyhounds was junior attack Jason Tosches (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South HS), who netted 34 goals and seven assists for a total of 41 points on the year. Tosches, pictutred at right, also picked up 24 ground balls as well. Freshman midfielder Robert Devine (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes HS) contributed 24 goals and 12 assists for 36 points to go along with a team leading 88 ground balls. Devine also had a 106-242 face-off record this season.

Freshman attack David Bennett (Easton, PA/Easton HS) recorded nine goals, 15 assists and 17 ground balls while freshman attack Christopher Mohapp (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South HS) put in 11 goals, 12 assists, and 18 ground balls before getting hurt late in the season. Brian Cleaver (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) had 14 goals, eight assists and 44 ground balls on the year.

Junior attack Christopher Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) netted eight goals and four assists to go along with eight ground balls while freshman midfielder David Forte (Chester, NJ/West Morris Mendham HS) had five goals, one assist and 26 ground balls while posting a 30-88 face-off record. Junior defender Steven Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell HS) has scored one goal and four assists to go with 74 ground balls while freshmen attack Ian Harrold (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts HS) had one goal, one assist and three ground balls.

Sophomore midfielder Kevin Smart (Drexel Hill, PA/Archbishop Carroll HS) and freshmen midfielder Tim Smetana (Harvard, MA/The Bromfield School HS) each recorded one assist while Smart picked up 34 ground balls and Smetana got 17 ground balls of his own. Senior defender David Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS), pictured at left, had one goal, the first of his career, and 65 ground balls while freshman defender Michael Santos (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan HS) picked up 55 ground balls as well.

In goal for the Greyhounds was freshmen Benjamin Leavy (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS), who had a 13.47 goal against average and 211 saves in 940 minutes of action. Junior goalie Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) was hurt 21 minutes into the season and was only able to record five saves on the year.

Also contributing this year for the Greyhounds were senior Peter Coutros (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS), junior Matthew Mariani (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick HS), and freshmen Daniel Cress (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson HS), Daniel Heil (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville DeWitt HS), and Matthew Levine (Island Park, NY/West Hempstead HS).

Courtos and Danni were named to the 2008 Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Coutros and Danni were both named to the 2008 Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Coach Meagher should return most of his team for the 2009 season when the Greyhounds look to challenge for a berth in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
