LANDMARK CONFERENCE ASSISTANT
COMMISSIONER POSITION DESCRIPTION
THE POSITION:
The Landmark Conference is comprised of eight NCAA Division III
institutions located in the mid-Atlantic region. The conference
members include seven independent private colleges and universities
and a federal academy. All of the institutions have a residential
focus. Member institutions are committed to the centrality of
the academic mission and the educational value of athletics. The
Chief Executive Officers of the Landmark Conference are involved
and in control of Intercollegiate Athletics.
THE CONFERENCE:
The member institutions are: Drew University, Madison, NJ; Goucher
College, Baltimore, MD.; Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA.; Moravian
College, Bethlehem, PA.; Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove,
PA.; The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC.; The
University of Scranton, Scranton, PA.; and the United States Merchant
Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. The Conference Office is located
in Madison, NJ on the campus of Drew University.
The conference founded November 2005 by the Chief Executive Officers
of the member institutions, will begin competition in the fall
of 2007. The Landmark Conference is committed to the NCAA Division
III philosophy with a focus on integrating the athletic and educational
experience. Consistent with the NCAA Division III philosophy each
institution offers a wide variety of varsity sports that are fully
supported and receive equal treatment. Student-athletes are students
first and therefore are treated in the same way as all students
in terms of admissions, financial aid, and academic and social
support.
Member institutions encourage student-athletes to realize their
full potential both academically and athletically. Historically,
conference members have been very successful on and off the field
of play. Members have produced numerous All- Americans, Academic
All-American, NCAA Post-Graduate Scholars and Rhodes Scholars.
In addition member institutions have won a significant number
of conference, regional and National Championships.
REPORTING AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Assistant Commissioner will report to the Conference Commissioner
who, in turn, reports directly to the eight Chief Executive Officers.
The assistant will serve as the conference’s primary coordinator
for media and public relations. He/she will interact on a daily
basis not only with the public and the media but also with conference
sports information directors, coaches and athletic administrators.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Assist in the development and maintenance of the conference
website to include members’ information, sport standings,
statistics, results, relevant releases and links.
- Distribute conference news releases to member institutions,
and the appropriate media. The releases will include, but not
be limited to results, conference statistics, players of the
week, and upcoming events.
- Develop and coordinate a reporting protocol with member institution
sports information directors.
- Distribute releases related to conference awards and championships.
- Receive inquiries from the media, the public and member institutions
regarding the various aspects of conference member athletic
programs.
- Report conference sports information, as appropriate, to
the ECAC, NCAA and sport specific outlets.
- Create an annual sport championship summary to include each
sport’s final standings, championship results, individual
statistical rankings and award recipients.
- Create, maintain and archive complete records of all athletic
competition between conference members, including conference
records and statistics in each sport. Select the software necessary
to distribute this information to conference sports information
directors and the media.
- Coordinate the public relations functions of the conference,
including, but not limited to, preparing and publishing conference
brochures and promotional information.
- In cooperation with the championship host institutions sports
information director, prepare championship programs.
- Prepare an annual report to be presented at the athletics
directors and the CEO’s.
This report will be included in a conference handbook.
- Represent the conference, when and where appropriate, at
media events and championship.
- Perform other professional responsibilities as assigned by
the Commissioner.
- Serve as Commissioner in the event of his/her absence
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors Degree required, Masters Degree and two years experience
in a Sports related field preferred.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience up
to a predetermined limit.
An excellent benefits package is available.
Appropriate hardware and software will be provided.
Authorized travel expenses will be reimbursed.
