At Elizabethtown College – Lost 5-2 in Commonwealth Conference Semifinals

Freshman midfielder Tim Shannon gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of their Commonwealth Conference Semifinal match at Elizabethtown College when he blasted a direct kick through the wall and into the goal but Moravian could not withstand the offense of the Blue Jays, falling 5-2 to end the season.  After Elizabethtown had taken a 4-1 lead in the 49th minute, the Greyhounds would score their second goal when junior midfielder Paul Melniczek scored on a diving head shot off a cross from freshman forward Anthony Merz in the 52nd minute.  However, Merz would receive his second yellow card of the contest just five minutes later and Moravian finished the match down one man.  Elizabethtown owned a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks.  Freshman goalie Greg Bechtel made nine saves in the loss.

At Muhlenberg College – Won 1-0

Senior forward Van Pham knocked home the rebound of a shot by freshman forward Anthony Merz in the 73rd minute to lift the Greyhounds to a 1-0 victory over rival Muhlenberg College.  Pham's goal was his eighth of the season.  Freshman goalie Greg Bechtel made two saves in the first half and sophomore keeper Ryan Sculley had one stop in the second half for the shutout.

Vs. Juniata College – Won 3-0

Freshman midfielder Brian Donofrio scored in the 49th minute to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in route to a 3-0 victory over Juniata College in Commonwealth Conference action to clinch the Greyhounds’ first playoff appearance since 1991. Moravian improves to 8-10 on the season and 4-3 in the Commonwealth Conference.  The Greyhounds are now the third seed in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs and will play in the semifinals at Elizabethtown College on Wednesday, November 1st. Donofrio scored on an unassisted goal to put Moravian on the board after a scoreless first half.  Moravian took a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute on a score by freshman midfielder off a pass from junior midfielder Paul Melniczek.  The Greyhounds completed the scoring in the 81st minute on a goal by freshman midfielder Anthony Merz off an assist from freshman midfielder Mike Grillo.  Moravian freshman goalie Greg Bechtel made four saves for his first career shutout.

At Elizabethtown College – Lost 1-0

Freshman goalie Greg Bechtel made five saves in his first start in over two weeks and he allowed just one goal but the Greyhounds fell to Elizabethtown College, 1-0, in Commonwealth Conference action.  The match was played a day earlier than scheduled due both schools hosting women's soccer playoff matches on Wednesday. 

At Messiah College – Lost 3-1

Senior forward Van Pham scored in the 26th minute off a pass from freshman forward Anthony Merz but the Greyhounds couldn't battle back any further in a 3-1 loss to Messiah College in Commonwealth Conference action.  Sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley made seven saves in the first half while freshman Greg Bechtel had seven saves in the second half. 

At Albright College – Lost 3-2

Despite second half goals from junior midfielder Scott Heydt and senior forward Van Pham, the Greyhounds lost their first match of the season in Commonwealth Conference action, falling to Albright College, 3-2.  Senior defender Kevin Byrne assisted on Heydt's goal while senior midfielder Andrew Grezlak had the assist on Pham's goal.  Moravian held a 16-9 advantage in shots in the contest.  Greyhound sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley had three saves on the day.

At Wilkes University – Lost 2-0

Sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley made three saves and the Greyhounds out shot Wilkes University 11-6 but Moravian came out of the match on the short end of the score in a 2-0 loss to the Colonels in Middle Atlantic Conference action.

At Delaware Valley College – Won 3-1

Junior midfielder Paul Melniczek scored a pair of goals and freshman midfielder Tim Shannon added the game-winning goal and an assist as the Greyhounds defeated Delaware Valley College, 3-1, in Middle Atlantic Conference action.  Melniczek scored the first goal of the match in the 26th minute while Shannon's game-winner came in the 63rd minute.  Melniczek finished the scoring in the 84th minute.  Moravian sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley had four saves in the win. 

Vs. Drew University – Lost 4-3

The Greyhounds dropped a 4-3 Middle Atlantic Conference match to Drew University.  Moravian, which trailed 3-0 at halftime, pulled within one goal early in the second half with goals by freshman midfielder Brian Donofrio assisted by freshman midfielder Tim Shannon and junior midfielder Evan Weller assisted by freshman defender Dan Shane.  After the Rangers took a  4-2 lead, Weller tallied a second goal off an assist from junior midfielder Scott Heydt with just less than four minutes left in the match.  Moravian sophomore keeper Ryan Sculley had five saves in the match.

Vs. Allentown College – Lost 1-0

For the first time in seven matches, the Greyhounds were on the losing end of the score, falling to Allentown College, 1-0, in Middle Atlantic Conference action despite out shooting the Centaurs, 19-17.  Sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley made 13 saves in the match.

At Susquehanna University – Won 6-2

Senior midfielder Andrew Grezlak had two first half goals, the first two goals of his career, to help the Greyhounds to a 5-0 halftime lead and a 6-2 victory over Susquehanna University in Commonwealth Conference action.   Moravian, winners of its last six matches, moves to 6-4 overall on the season and 3-0 in the Commonwealth Conference.  Senior forward Van Pham started the scoring in the fourth minute off a pass from sophomore forward Wilson Gonzalez. Grezlak scored his first goal in the 8th minute from senior midfielder Rich Tate. Grezlak’s second goal was in the 20th minute and was unassisted.  Senior Matt Kling extended the Greyhounds lead to 4-0 in the 23rd minute when he made a penalty kick and junior midfielder Paul Melniczek ended the scoring in the first half with a goal in the 36th minute off a pass from freshman midfielder Mike Grillo. The Greyhounds final goal of the match was an own goal by Susquehanna.  Sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley played 70 minutes with seven saves while freshman Greg Bechtel made two saves in the final 20 minutes.

Vs. University of Scranton – Won 5-1

Senior forward Van Pham scored a pair of goals to help Moravian to a 5-1 victory over the University of Scranton in Middle Atlantic Conference action.  Pham tallied the first goal of the match in the 18th minute when he headed home a corner kick from junior midfielder Evan Weller. The Greyhounds, now 5-4 overall and winners of five straight matches after losing the first four contests of the season, extended the lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute on a goal by junior midfielder Rich Tate from senior defender Andrew Grezlak.  Pham would score again on another header in the 23rd minute off a cross from freshman midfielder Brian Donofrio. Junior midfielder Scott Heydt booted home Moravian’s fourth goal of the first half in the 39th minute off a pass from junior midfielder Nick Jordal.  Jordal would finish the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 76th minute after Scranton had scored its only tally in the 57th minute.   Sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley made 11 saves for his third straight victory in net for the Greyhounds.

Vs. Alvernia College – Won 4-0

Senior forward Van Pham and freshman midfielder Anthony Merz each had a goal and an assist to lead Moravian to a 4-0 non-conference win over Alvernia College.  Pham headed home the first goal of the match in the sixth minute off a pass from Merz and the two traded places in the 53rd minute when Merz scored the goal.   Sophomore Wilson Gonzalez tallied a goal for the Greyhounds in the 57th minute off a pass from senior defender Kevin Byrne.  Junior midfielder Paul Melniczek score Moravian’s final goal on a direct kick in the 73rd minute.  Moravian sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley made 11 saves for his second straight shutout.

At Lycoming College – Won 4-0

The Greyhounds extended their winning streak to three straight matches and earned their first shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over Lycoming College in Middle Atlantic Conference action.  Sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley made four saves for his first collgiate shutout and freshman midfielder Anthony Merz provided the Greyhounds offense with two goals and an assist.  Senior forward Van Pham and freshman midfielder Tim Shannon also score goals for Moravian while senior defender Andrew Grezlak and junior midfielder Scott Heydt each had assists.

At Muhlenberg College – Postponed to Oct. 30

The Moravian at Muhlenberg College soccer match was postponed due to heavy rain in the Lehigh Valley.  It has been rescheduled for Monday, October 30th at 1:00 p.m.

At Widener University – Won 2-1

Junior midfielder Scott Heydt scored in the 63rd minute to lift Moravian to a 2-1 Commonwealth Conference victory over Widener University.  The Greyhounds jumped on the board first in the 13th minute on a goal by freshman midfielder Anthony Merz with an assist from senior forward Van Pham.  Heydt drove home his winning goal off a pass from Merz. Moravian held a 23-18 advantage in shots and had nine saves from freshman goalie Greg Bechtel.

At Lebanon Valley College – Won 3-2

Junior midfielder Evan Weller scored a pair of goals to lift Moravian to its first win of the season, a 3-2 triumph over Lebanon Valley College in Commonwealth Conference action.  Weller’s first goal came in the 54th minute as he knocked home a pass from senior Van Pham. Weller tallied the game winner in the 70th minute on an unassisted goal. The Greyhounds had taken a 1-0 lead at halftime on a goal by sophomore Wilson Gonzalez  in the 44th minute. Freshman midfielder Tim Shannon had the assist on Gonzalez’s goal.  Moravian freshman goalie Greg Bechtel made six saves for his first collegiate win.

At Rutgers University-Camden – Lost 3-0

For the first time this season, the Greyhounds were shutout in a match as Moravian fell to Rutgers University-Camden, 3-0, in non-conference action.   Freshman goalie Greg Bechtel made two saves in 78 minutes while sophomore goalie Ryan Sculley had one save in 12 minutes.  Despite being shut out, the Greyhounds did own a 17-12 advantage in shots during the match.

At Eastern College – Lost 3-1

Junior Scott Heydt scored his first goal of the season but it wasn't enough as the Greyhounds fell to Eastern College, 3-1.  Moravian trailed 3-0 in the match before Heydt tallied his goal off a pass from freshman Mike Grillo in the 79th minute.  Moravian freshman goalie Greg Bechtel made six saves in 70 minutes of action while freshman Vinny Nasuta played the final 20 minutes of the match.

At Johns Hopkins in Johns Hopkins Classic – Lost 4-1

Moravian fell to host Johns Hopkins University, 4-1, in the second day of the Johns Hopkins Classic.  Junior midfielder Evan Weller netted an unassisted goal while freshman goalie Greg Bechtel made nine saves in the match.

Vs. St. Mary's (MD) College at Johns Hopkins Classic – Lost 3-1

The Greyhounds opened up the 2000 season with a loss to St. Mary's College in the first round of the Johns Hopkins University Classic.  Freshman midfielder Tim Shannon tallied Moravian's only goal in the match.  Freshman goalie Greg Bechtel. had five saves in his first collegiate start.
