SUSQUEHANNA TOPS JUNIATA, 5-1, TO ADVANCE TO WINNER’S BRACKET AT 2009 LANDMARK CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

            BETHLEHEM, PA --- The second seeded Susquehanna University softball team posted a 5-1 victory over third seeded Juniata College in the teams’ first round game Saturday morning to advance to the winner’s bracket in the 2009 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament being hosted by Moravian College.
            The Crusaders advance to play the top seeded Greyhounds at approximately 12:00 p.m. with the winner of that game moving into the championship contest.  Juniata will play fourth seed The Catholic University of America in the tournament’s first elimination game at approximately 2:00 p.m.
            Susquehanna jumped out a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Junior catcher Kelli Holota (Spring Lake, NJ/Livingston HS) reached first on a wild pitch after a strikeout and moved to third on a double from sophomore third baseman Shelly Landis (Souderton, PA/Christopher Dock HS).  Sophomore shortstop Taylor Crawford (Matamoras, PA/Delaware Valley HS) then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Holota.
            The Crusaders extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Junior outfielder Deanna Anderson (Coal Township, PA/Shamokin Area HS) connected on a one-out, solo home run to score the first run of the inning.  Freshman outfielder Lisa Finizio (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills HS) followed with a triple to right field and scored on a Juniata throwing error on the play.
            The Eagles would get a run in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 3-1.  Senior outfielder Liz Schmitt (Knoxville, TN/H. Frank Carey (NY) HS) drew a one-out walk and eventually scored on a Susquehanna error in the outfield on a hit by sophomore second baseman Callandra McCool (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley HS)McCool was out at second on the play.
            Susquehanna added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Senior first baseman Laurie Blazka (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) drew a walk to start the inning, and Holota singled.  Sophomore Sara Bartoletti (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Coughlin HS) came in to pinch run for Holata, and both Blazka and Bartoletti scored on Landis’ third double of the game.
            The Crusaders had a 7-3 edge in hits with Landis going three-for-three.  Finizio was two-for-three for Susquehanna while McCool was two-for-three for Juniata.
            Susquehanna sophomore pitcher Cara Swerdlow (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield HS) improved to 15-7 in the circle, allowing an unearned run on three hits and four walks with 12 strikeouts.  Junior Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg HS) suffered the loss for the Eagles, falling to 14-7 on the season after giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts.
