MORAVIAN CAPTURES THIRD STRAIGHT LANDMARK CONFERENCE TITLE WITH 7-3 WIN OVER SUSQUEHANNA
BETHLEHEM, PA --- The top seeded Moravian College softball team captured its third straight Landmark Conference Championship and an automatic berth into the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament with a 7-3 victory over second seed Susquehanna University Sunday at Blue & Grey Field in the final game of the 2010 Landmark Conference Tournament.
The conference title is the 11th consecutive for the Greyhounds, who will also be in the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time in 13 seasons. The Greyhounds are now 30-12 on the season, their tenth straight 30-win season.
Moravian, which was in the unusual spot as the visiting team and sitting in the first base dugout for if necessary game, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior second baseman Stephanie Falzarano walked to start the game, and a throwing error on a bunt by freshman shortstop Katie Gross put runners on second and third. Freshman third baseman Shannen Mohr then ripped a two-RBI single past the shortstop to score Falzarano and Gross.
The Greyhounds would extend their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth. Freshman outfielder Samantha Mulderig singled with an out and scored on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Olivia Evanko.
Susquehanna would send nine batters to the plate in the bottom half of the fourth inning and score three runs to tie the game. Junior third baseman Brennan Balfour led off the inning with a solo home run, her tenth of the season. Later in the inning, junior second baseman Taylor Crawford hit an RBI double while sophomore shortstop Kate Reese had an RBI single.
Moravian answered right back in the top of the fifth with two runs to take a 5-3 lead. Gross was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and she scored on a bases loaded single by sophomore first baseman Jenna Carmon. Mulderig added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Mohr, who had walked.
The Greyhounds would get two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Evanko, Falzarano and Gross all hit singles to load the bases before Mohr hit a two-RBI single sending Evanko and Falzarano across the plate.
Moravian had a 12-6 advantage in hits with Gross going two-for-two. Mohr was two-for-three with four RBIs while Mulderig was also two-for-three. Evanko was two-for-four for the Greyhounds while junior first baseman Kim Rubino was two-for-three for Susquehanna.
Greyhound junior pitcher Elizabeth Python earned win in relief to improve to 6-2 on the season. Python allowed just a walk and struck out one batter in 3 2/3 innings. Freshman Alyssa Fegely started for Moravian and gave up three runs on six hits and a walk with one strikeout. Junior Cara Swerdlow, the first of three Susquehanna pitchers in the game, took the loss after giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in four-plus innings of action.
