CATHOLIC TOPS SUSQUEHANNA, 11-5, IN SECOND GAME OF LANDMARK CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

            BETHLEHEM, PA --- The third seeded Catholic University of America used a five-run sixth inning to open up a one-run game and earn an 11-5 victory over second seeded Susquehanna University in the opening game for the two teams at the 2011 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament hosted at Moravian College Friday.
            Catholic advances to play top seeded Moravian in a winner’s bracket game at 4:00 p.m.  Susquehanna will play in the first elimination game against fourth seed The University of Scranton at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
            The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Freshman outfielder Sam LaCoe (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights HS) walked with an out and eventually scored on a Catholic throwing error on an infield single by senior second baseman Taylor Crawford (Matamoras, PA/Delaware Valley HS).
            The Cardinals answered in the top of the second inning with four runs to take a 4-1 lead.  Senior catcher Kristen Trancynger (Pearl River, NY/Albertus Magnus HS) reached on a two-base error to start the inning, and she scored on a one-out RBI double from junior outfielder Tracey Scanlon (North Wales, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy).  After an error on a failed pickoff attempt, Scanlon scored the go ahead run on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Nina Victoria Curto (Pelham Manor, NY/Ursuline School HS)Curto would eventually score on a passed ball while sophomore outfielder Mel Galella (South Edison, NJ/Bishop George Ahr HS) drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single to score freshman outfielder Jillian Zic (Maspeth, NY/The Mary Louis Academy).
            Susquehanna would get two runs back in the bottom half of the second to cut Catholic’s lead to 4-3.  Senior designated player Shelly Landis (Souderton, PA/Christopher Dock Mennonite HS) walked to start the inning, and sophomore outfielder Kathryn Gilbert (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland HS) followed with a single and sophomore shortstop Larissa Luu (Montandon, PA/Milton HS) walked to load the bases.  Junior outfielder Lisa Finizio (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills HS) connected on a two-RBI single to score Landis and Gilbert.
            Catholic scored a run in the top of the third when junior shortstop Megan Rizzi (Mount Vernon, NH/Souhegan HS) hit a solo home run to left field, her fourth homer of the year.
            The Crusaders tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third.  Crawford led off the inning with a single, and senior third baseman Brennan Balfour (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth HS) reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.  After two outs, a pair of errors on a ground ball hit by Luu to score Crawford and Balfour.
            The Cardinals retook the lead, 6-5, with a run in the top of the fourth inning.  Curto led off with a double and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from junior second baseman Samantha Daubman (Plainedge, NY/Plainedge HS).
            Catholic extended its lead to 11-5 with five runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Scanlon led off with a single and Curto followed with a double to put runners at second and third.  Scanlon would come across the plate on a Susquehanna error on a ball hit by ZicGalella hit an RBI single to score Zic with the bases loaded, and after a pitching change, Rizzi hit an RBI single that scored DaubmanTrancynger hit an RBI fielder’s choice as sophomore third baseman Taylor Stockinger (Olney, MD/Sherwood HS) beat the throw to the plate.  Freshman pitcher Erin McMakin (Olney, MD/Sherwood HS) drove in Galella with the final run of the inning on an RBI ground out.
            The Cardinals had an 11-5 in hits with Curto going three-for-four with two runs.  Galella and Rizzi were both two-for-four with a pair of RBIs for Catholic while Scanlon was two-for-four with a pair of runs.  Zic went two-for-three with two runs.  For Susquehanna, Crawford was three-for-four while Finizio was one-for-three with two RBIs.
            Freshman pitcher Kerri Apicella (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay HS) improved to 11-9 on the year for Catholic in the circle after pitching six innings in relief.  She allowed a pair of unearned runs on two hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts.  McMakin started in the circle and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks to go with a strikeout in one-plus innings of action.
            Sophomore Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing HS) fell to 10-5 on the year for the Crusaders after allowing 11 runs, six earned, on nine hits and four walks to go with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.  Senior Bryn Whitmire (Lederach, PA/Souderton Area HS) tossed the final 1 2/3 innings with two hits.
