SUSQUEHANNA TOPS SCRANTON, 3-1, IN FIRST ELIMINATION GAME AT LANDMARK CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
BETHLEHEM, PA --- The second seeded Susquehanna University softball team won the first elimination game at the 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament hosted by Moravian College with a 3-1 win over fourth seed The University of Scranton Saturday morning.
The Royals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior second baseman Annie Zeleniak (Taylor, PA/Scranton Prep HS) walked with an out, and she scored from second base on a throwing error by Susquehanna.
The Crusaders answered with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. Senior third baseman Brennan Balfour (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth HS) singled with an out and scored on an RBI double from senior second baseman Taylor Crawford (Matamoras, PA/Delaware Valley HS).
Susquehanna scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to build a 3-1 lead. Junior outfielder Sarah Dowzicky (Collegeville, PA/Germantown Academy HS) hit a two-out single and junior outfielder Lisa Finizio (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills HS) reached on an error. Junior shortstop Kate Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area HS) followed with a two-RBI single down the right field line.
The Crusaders had a 7-2 advantage in hits with Reese going one-for-two with a pair of RBIs.
Senior Cara Swerdlow (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield HS) picked up her 19th win of the season in the circle for Susquehanna, allowing an unearned run on a hit and five walks while striking out three batters. Sophomore Sarah Hoffman (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing Valley HS) earned her first save of the season for the Crusaders after giving up a hit in two innings of action.
Junior Christine Capalbo (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) took the loss after allowing three runs, just one earned on seven hits and a walk to go with a strikeout.
