FOUR NAMED MORAVIAN ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Sophomore Neali Miller (Wyomissing/Wilson West Lawn HS) from the women’s soccer squad, junior Elissa Gerstel (Warminster/William Tennent HS) of the field hockey team, sophomore Charlie Bowden (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial HS) from the football team and sophomore Wes Zimmerman (Boyertown/Boyertown HS) of the men’s cross country squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Miller recorded a pair of shutouts in a 3-0 week for the women’s soccer squad last week. Miller, who is rotating games with Moravian’s other goalie, made three saves in a 3-0 shutout of Widener University and she had six saves in a 5-0 blanking of Haverford College. Miller has had three consecutive shutouts for the Greyhounds. Moravian is 6-1 overall this fall.

Gerstel, a midfielder, scored five goals last week in a 2-1 week for the Greyhounds. Gerstel, who has scored seven of Moravian’s 11 goals this season, netted both goals in a 2-0 win over Bryn Mawr College. She added two goals in a 5-2 victory at Cedar Crest College and Gerstel scored the only goal in a 3-1 loss to Messiah College. Moravian is 3-2 on the year.

Bowden made his first collegiate start a good one by leading the Greyhounds to a 27-17 victory over Albright. Bowden completed 19 of 33 passes for 256 yards with touchdown passes of 64 and 21 yards. He also ran for a touchdown in the game. Moravian is 2-0 for the first time since 1996.

Zimmerman led the cross country squad to a first place tie at the Muhlenberg College Invitational on Saturday with a third place finish on the 8,000 meter course with a time of 27:15.4. The Greyhounds tied rival Muhlenberg for first place while the Moravian women’s team won the race, its third victory of the season.
