22 GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO SPRING MAC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
ANNVILLE, PA --- Moravian College had 22 of its spring sports student-athletes named to
the Middle Atlantic Corporation Spring All-Academic Team. The women's track & field
team led the way for the Greyhounds with 11 student-athletes.
To be a member of the MAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.40
grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve on his or her respective team.
Of the 11 student-athletes from the women's track & field team, which won its ninth
straight MAC Outdoor Championship, six are from the junior class led by All-Americans Heidi
Wolfsberger (Moosic/Riverside HS), Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin HS) and Erin
Boyle (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy). Wolfsberger is a four-time track All-American
and was the NCAA Division III National Champion in the 1,500 meters indoors this winter
while Shertzer was an All-American in the 10,000 meters last year. Boyle was an All-American
in the distance medley relay indoors this winter with Wolfsberger. The other juniors
on the MAC All-Academic Team are distance runners Tiffany Catalino (Bethlehem/Freedom
HS), Amanda Samok (Palmerton/ Palmerton Area HS) and Jennifer Boberg (Lansford/Panther
Valley HS).
Other members of the MAC Spring All-Academic Team from the women's track & field squad
were senior jumper Leah Williams (Andreas/Tamaqua HS), sophomore pole vaulter Amanda
Wynn (Hellertown/Saucon Valley HS) and sophomore distance runners Jennifer Wagner
(Riegelsville/ Wilson HS), who was an All-American with Wolfsberger and Boyle on the
distance medley relay team, Regina Lacombe (Andover, CT/Rham HS) and Ann Corless
(Plainville, CT/Plainville HS).
The Greyhound men's track & field team, which placed third at the MAC Championships,
had six honorees led by senior distance runner Damon Rutherford (Reading/Exeter HS),
who placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2001 MAC Championships. Joining
Rutherford were junior sprinter Chris Colley (Easton/Easton HS) and sophomore distance
runners Wes Zimmerman (Boyertown/Boyertown HS) and Justin Arnold (Basking Ridge,
NJ/Ridge HS) and sprinters Eric Paul (Reading/Reading Central Catholic HS) and Chris
McGinnis (Brick, NJ/Brick HS).
Representing the Moravian softball team that made the NCAA Division III National Tournament
for the fourth straight season and set the school record for all sports with 33 victories
this spring were junior outfielder Summer Miller (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional
HS) and junior second baseman Laurie Rentschler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh HS). The
softball team also won its second straight Commonwealth Conference Championship.
The Greyhounds had two baseball players earn spots on the sophomore infielder Luke
Bricker (Kutztown/Kutztown HS) and sophomore pitcher Ryan Boyle (Bethlehem/Liberty
HS).
Rounding out the Moravian selections for the spring was sophomore Dan Gorman (Saylorsburg/Pleasant
Valley HS) of the men's tennis team that made the MAC playoffs for the first time
since 1996 this spring.
