MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- The women's tennis team which won its second straight Middle Atlantic Conference title last week and five other have been named as Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Senior Corinne Kleinsmith (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) anchored the women's tennis lineup at number one singles.  Kleinsmith, a former MAC Doubles Champion, had a 6-7 singles mark this season and a 41-17 record in four seasons.  Junior Jenn Genevese (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) played at number two for the Greyhounds and she had a 13-0 record this fall.  Genevese has a career mark of 38-8.  Kleinsmith & Genevese has teamed up for an 11-2 record at first doubles this season.

Freshman Becky Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) played number three singles for the Hounds and she was undefeated at 14-0 while senior Katie Copf (Allentown, PA/ Salisbury HS) was 10-3 at fourth singles.  Senior Lacey Leverberg (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg HS) posted a 13-1 mark at fifth singles.  Copf had a 47-10 career singles mark while Leverberg was 49-7.  The duo was 10-2 at second doubles for Moravian this season.

Junior Jill Simms (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) was 7-1 at sixth singles and 8-2 at third doubles with her sister senior Julie Simms (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) until she was sidelined with an injury.  Sophomore Lauren Castagna (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) stepped in her spot at sixth singles and had a 5-1 record.  Castagna and Julie Simms were 3-0 at third doubles.  Moravian completed its second undefeated season in four years with a 16-0 record and the squad is 117-11 since the start of the 1994 season with five MAC Championships in the last six years.

Sophomore setter Amy Lawrence (Gettysburg, PA/Delone Catholic HS) was been named the Commonwealth Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the week for her performance last week.  Lawrence led the Greyhounds to a 3-2 record last week including a 2-2 mark at the Western Maryland Green Terror Invitational and a third place finish in the Gold Bracket.  Lawrence was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Green Terror Invitational and it was the third all-tournament team she has been named to this season.  She averaged 10.28 assists over 18 games last week and she added 3.4 digs and 1.2 kills per game with a .340 hitting percentage.  Moravian is 16-6 on the season.

Senior Erin Boyle (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy HS) ran the best race of her career last weekend for the Moravian women's cross country team which has been ranked #1 in the nation the last four weeks.  Boyle was third at the DeSales University Invitational, won the Greyhounds, in a time of 18:41.74.  The time was Boyle's best 5,000-meter time of the year by 26 seconds.  Moravian will go for its ninth straight MAC title on October 27th.

Tim Shannon (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley HS) led the Greyhounds to a 2-1 mark last week with four goals including the winning goal in both Moravian's men's soccer wins last week.  Shannon, a sophomore midfielder, had a pair of goals in a 3-2 overtime win at Delaware Valley College and he added two tallies in a 4-0 victory at Wilkes.  Moravian had its five match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to #11 Johns Hopkins on Saturday.  Shannon scored eight goals and one assist in the five-match winning streak with four game-winning goals.  The Greyhounds are 9-3-2 this fall.

Junior linebacker John Cupples (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was been named the Middle Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for his performance in the Greyhounds 41-0 victory over Delaware Valley.  Junior tailback Josh Fick (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) earned a spot on the MAC Honor Roll for his performance as well.

Cupples led the Greyhounds to their first shutout since the 1998 season in the victory over Delaware Valley.  Cupples paced the Moravian defense with ten tackles, including nine solo stops, two for loss, one of Moravian's nine sacks and one of Moravian's four interceptions which he returned 46 yards, ending the Aggies best scoring chance of the game.  The Greyhounds allowed just 56 yards rushing on 35 attempts for Delaware Valley in addition to the four interceptions and nine sacks.

Fick had the best day of his collegiate career and the ninth best day in Moravian College history, gaining 172 yards on 21 carries with two first-quarter touchdowns.  Fick averaged 8.19 yards per carry and had runs of 54 yards and 32 yards to go with his touchdown runs of four and ten yards.  The 100-plus yard game was Fick's second in three games and Moravian's third straight 100-yard rusher.  Moravian is currently 2-3 on the season.
