26 MORAVIAN TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES NAMED TO MAC ALL-STAR TEAMS
ANNVILLE, PA --- The Moravian College men's and women's indoor track & field teams
have had 26 student-athletes named to 46 positions on the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference
All-Star First & Second Teams.
To earn MAC All-Star honors, a student-athlete must finish in the top six of an event
at the MAC Championships with the medal winners being named to the All-Star First Team
and the fourth though sixth place finishers earning All-Star Second Team accolades.
The Moravian women, who won their seventh straight MAC indoor title, had 17 student-athletes
earn 28 spots. Freshman Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS), who was named
the Women's Most Outstanding Performer of the MAC Championships, earned All-Star First
Team honors in the long jump, where she was the champion with a jump of 5.29 meters, and
in the triple jump, which she was also the champion of with a distance of 10.92 meters. Rotzell earned
All-Star Second Team accolades for a fourth place finish in the 55 meters in 7.68 seconds.
Senior Erin Boyle (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy HS) earned All-Star First
Team honors in three events with a second place in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:53.01,
a third place showing in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.92, and a championship in the
distance medley relay with fellow seniors Kim Jaick (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh
HS), Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin HS) and Amanda Samok (Palmerton,
PA/Palmerton HS) in a meet record time of 12:29.59. Shertzer also earned
First Team honors for winning the 5,000 meters in a meet record time of 17:50.90, and Jaick was
also on the First Team for the 5,000 meters, finishing second in 18:17.59. Samok earned
Second Team honors for a fourth place finish in the 400 meters in 1:03.37.
Senior Sarah Shaneberger (Bethlehem, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) earned All-Star First
Team accolades in the weight throw with a winning toss of 12.61 meters and in the shot
put with a second place distance of 12.05 meters. Senior Steph Horne (Sinking
Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) was named to the All-Star First Team in the 55-meter
hurdles for her second place finish in a Moravian record time of 8.70 seconds. Horne also
earned Second Team honors in the 200 meters with a sixth place finish in the school record
time of 27.33 seconds.
Freshman Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) earned All-Star First Team accolades
in the 800 meters with a winning time of 2:22.37, and she teamed with senior Jen Boberg
(Lansford, PA/Panther Valley HS) and freshmen Megan Wise (North Wales, PA/North
Penn HS) and Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) to win the 4x800-meter
relay in a meet record time of 9:57.96. Wise was also named to the All-Star
Second Team for a sixth place finish in the 1,500 meters in 5:00.14.
Rounding out the Moravian women honorees were sophomore Christina Scherwin (Denmark) earning
First Team honors for winning the shot put with a meet record toss of 13.36 meters, freshman Julie
Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) earning First Team accolades for a second place
showing in the weight throw with a second place toss of 11.80 meters, and sophomore Amanda
Wynn (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) earning a First Team sport for a third place
finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.67 meters. Junior Jen Wagner
(Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS) was named to the All-Star Second Team for a fifth place
finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:59.92, while freshman Chelsea Mullins (Jim
Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) was sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:46.15 for
Second Team honors and sophomore Alicia Fowler (Easton, PA/Easton HS) was fifth
in the weight throw with a toss of 11.15 meters for Second Team accolades.
The Moravian men's squad, which finished third at the MAC Championships last weekend,
had nine student-athletes earn 18 All-Star slots led by senior Kevin Bush (Stroudsburg,
PA/Stroudsburg HS). Bush, who was named the Men's Most Outstanding Performer
at the MAC meet, was named to the All-Star First Team in the 200 meters for winning the
race in a meet record time of 22.68 seconds and winning the 400 meters in a meet record
time of 50.41 seconds. Bush teamed with senior Josh Heebner (Lansdale,
PA/North Penn HS), junior George Wacker (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale HS) and freshman Scott
Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) to earn All-Star First Team honors in
the 4x400-meter relay in a meet record time of 3:28.28. Bush also earned All-Star
Second Team accolades in the 55 meters with a sixth place time of 7.24 seconds in the final.
Silvoy earned All-Star First Team honors in the 200 meters, finishing in second
at 22.96 seconds, and he was named to the All-Star Second Team in the 400 meters for a
sixth place finish in 52.02 seconds. Heebner and Wacker also earned
All-Star First Team honors in the distance medley relay with sophomore Joe Grady (Nanticoke,
PA/Nanticoke HS) and freshman Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) in
a winning time of 10:41.17. Grady and Grogan teamed with sophomore Sean
McDonnell (Scranton, PA/Scranton Prep HS) and freshman Matt Oertner (Slatington,
PA/Northern Lehigh HS) to earn All-Star Second Team accolades in the 4x800-meter relay
with a second place finish in a time of 8:19.21.
Moravian's only other male honoree was sophomore Joe Moore (Andover, NJ/Newton HS),
who was on the All-Star First Team for his first place finish in the long jump with a leap
of 7.04 meters.
