FOUR GREYHOUNDS NAMED STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Sophomore Jessica Esposito (Madison, NJ/Madison HS) of the softball team, sophomore Christina Scherwin (Denmark) from the women's track & field squad, senior Sean Carney (Ariel, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) of the golf team and senior Bill Quinn (Lebanon, CT/Lyman Memorial HS) from the baseball squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Esposito, an outfielder, helped the Greyhounds to 2-0 record last week with a doubleheader sweep of Albright College, 7-0 & 5-2. Moravian finished the Commonwealth Conference season by winning 11 straight games and sweeping five consecutive doubleheaders. Esposito was two-for-four with two runs scored and a RBI in the first game of the doubleheader. She scored the only run of the game Moravian would need in the bottom of the second inning. In the second contest with Moravian trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Esposito ripped a two-run double to the gap in right centerfield to drive in what was the game winning run. The Greyhounds are 31-6 overall and will return to action at the Commonwealth Conference Tournament on Friday, May 3rd.

Scherwin captured first place in the College Women Championship at the 108th Penn Relays with a throw of 52.86 (173 feet, five inches). Scherwin, who has the longest throw in the nation this season on any level, was throwing on the same field where a torn ACL ended her first season at Moravian. Scherwin and the rest of the Greyhounds will be competing at the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships hosted by Susquehanna University this Thursday through Saturday, May 2nd to 4th.

Carney led the Moravian golfers to a third place finish at the Lehigh Valley Championships, including a one stroke victory over rival Muhlenberg College, and a third place finish at the 2002 MAC Championships. Carney fired a team-best round of 83 at the Northampton Country Club during the Lehigh Valley Championships. He was tied for tied for 17th with a 27-hole total of 122 at the Shawnee Country Club after the first day of the MAC Championship and the second day was canceled due to rain.

Quinn, a designated hitter, hit .400 for the Greyhounds last week with four hits in ten at-bats including a pair of solo homeruns at Albright College last Saturday. Quinn also scored five runs and added two RBIs and a 1.000 slugging percentage for the week. The Greyhounds are 13-24 overall and close out their 2002 season on Monday, April 29th in a non-conference game at Haverford College.
