SCHERWIN, SHERTZER & WOLFSBERGER NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Sophomore Christina Scherwin (Denmark) and seniors Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin HS) and Heidi Wolfsberger (Moosic, PA/Riverside HS) of the women's track & field team have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

The trio competed at the 2002 NCAA Division III National Championships hosted by Macalester College and they helped the Greyhounds to tie for ninth place at the meet.

Scherwin became Moravian's seventh Individual National Champion and the first in a field event after capturing first place in the javelin throw at the 2002 NCAA Division III National Championships. Scherwin, who is the third female in Moravian history to win a national championship, had a meet record and winning throw of 51.69 meters (169 feet, seven inches). Scherwin also competed in the shot put on in the final day of the competition and placed ninth in the second flight with a toss of 13.00 meters (42 feet, eight inches). 

Shertzer placed seventh in the inaugural 3,000-meter steeplechase on the second day of the National Championships. Shertzer ran a time of 11:04.25 and earned All-American honors for the second time in her career with her top eight finish. Shertzer is a two-time track & field All-American and a four-time All-American for the Greyhounds.

Wolfsberger competed in the finals of the 1,500 meters and placed second with a time of 4:36.78 to earn All-America accolades. Wolfsberger's runner-up finish was her third in the 1,500 meters over the last three years and her fifth overall in NCAA track & field and cross country competition. Wolfsberger posted a time of 4:44.73 and placed second in the second preliminary heat to move into championship race. Wolfsberger, who won the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship in the 1,500 meters indoors, was a three-time cross country All-American and an ten-time All-American for Moravian during her career.
