FOUR NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Senior Jennifer Genevese (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) of the women’s tennis team, junior Amy Lawrence (Gettysburg, PA/Delone Catholic HS) from the women’s volleyball squad, senior Charlie Bowden (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial HS) of the football team and sophomore Jim Feimster (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain HS) from the men’s soccer squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Genevese, Moravian’s top singles and doubles player, led the Greyhounds to their third straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and the squad’s sixth title in seven seasons with an 8-1 victory over Messiah College last Monday. Genevese had both a singles and a doubles win in the match and her singles triumph was the point that gave Moravian the title. Genevese also posted a 3-1 record at the 2002 MAC Individual Tournament last week. She was seeded third in the tournament and reached the semifinals before being knocked out. Genevese had a singles victory in Moravian’s other match last week, a 6-3 victory at Marywood College to finish her career with a 53-13 singles mark. Moravian completed the season at 15-0 and has a 38-match winning streak.

Lawrence, a setter, led the Greyhounds to a 4-1 record last week including a 3-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference action. In the five matches, Lawrence averaged 11.87 assists, 4.13 digs and 1.53 kills per game while hitting .512 for the week. Lawrence committed just one hitting error in 32 chances as Moravian posted a 3-1 record at the Green Terror Invitational hosted by McDaniel College. She had a triple-double in the Greyhounds’ 3-0 victory over regionally ranked Eastern University with 36 assists, 13 digs and 10 kills. Lawrence also added three service aces and three blocks during the week. Moravian, now 18-7 on the season, returns to action on Wednesday, October 23rd in a Commonwealth Conference match at Susquehanna University beginning at 7:00 p.m. With a victory in that match, Moravian will clinch its seventh straight postseason appearance.

Bowden completed 9 of 1 passes for 187 yards with three touchdowns and he ran three times for 47 yards and a score to lead the Greyhounds to a 33-13 victory over Delaware Valley College in Middle Atlantic Conference action. Bowden was not sacked in the game and for the first time in 2002, he did not throw an interception. He had a 31-yard run on a third down play that set up his third touchdown pass of the game. With the three touchdown passes in the game, Bowden now has 36 in his career to move into third all-time at Moravian. The Greyhounds have won three straight games to improve their record to 4-2 overall and in the MAC. Moravian will return to action on Saturday, October 26th at Wilkes University in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.

Feimster, a midfielder, helped keep Moravian’s postseason chances alive as the Greyhounds posted a 2-0 record last week. Feimster netted the only goal in Moravian’s 1-0 victory at Franklin & Marshall College. The goal was his third of the season and all three have won matches. Feimster added an assist on the Greyhounds’ winning goal in the 83rd minute of a 2-1 victory at Susquehanna University in Commonwealth Conference action. The win got Moravian back to .500 in conference action and keeps them in the race for one of the four-playoff spots. The Greyhounds, now 6-5-2 on the year, return to action on Tuesday, October 22nd in a Commonwealth Conference match at Elizabethtown College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
