GENEVESE & DERINGER NAMED TO COMMONWEALTH ALL-STAR TEAM;
BENNER COACH OF THE YEAR
ANNVILLE, PA --- Senior Jennifer Genevese (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall
HS) and sophomore Becky Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) of
the Moravian College women’s tennis team have been named to the 2002 Commonwealth
All-Conference Team while Greyhound head coach Dawn Benner, a native
of Lititz, PA, has been tabbed as the Commonwealth Coach of the Year for the fourth
consecutive year.
The duo and Benner helped lead Moravian to an overall
record of 15-0 record and the squad’s third straight and sixth MAC Team Championship
in seven seasons this fall. Since 1994, the Greyhounds have posted a record of 132-11
and won six Commonwealth titles in addition to the six MAC Championships. The undefeated
season was Moravian’s second straight and third in the last five years. Moravian
currently has a 38-match winning streak and the squad had a 46-match winning streak from
1997 until 1999.
Benner has a career record of 153-63 in 16 seasons as
Moravian’s head coach. She has led the program to the MAC Championship match each
year since 1994.
Genevese, who was on the Commonwealth All-Conference
Team last year, posted a 15-5 singles record this season as Moravian’s top singles
player. She reached the semifinals of the 2002 MAC Individual Tournament as the number
three seed and Genevese finished her career with a 53-13 singles record.
In doubles action, Genevese combined with Deringer to
post a 14-3 record as the Greyhounds’ top doubles tandem. Deringer,
who was honored as the Commonwealth Rookie of the Year in 2001, was 12-6 at second singles
for Moravian and has a career mark of 27-7 with two seasons left.
