FOUR HOUNDS NAMED STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Sophomore Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) from
the women’s cross country team, junior Amy Lawrence (Gettysburg, PA/Delone
Catholic HS) of the women’s volleyball squad, senior John Cupples
(Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) from the football team and junior
Tim Shannon (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley HS) of the men’s soccer squad
have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances
last week.
McGarvie paced the Greyhounds to their tenth straight Middle Atlantic
Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship by their closest margin ever, defeating
Messiah College by just four points, 43 to 47, at the 2002 MAC Championships run at Lancaster
County Central Park. Moravian did have its streak of MAC individuals champions snapped
at nine. McGarvie was the top Moravian finisher and earned a spot on the
All-Middle Atlantic Conference First Team with a third place finish in a time of 23:14
on the 6,000-meter course.
Lawrence, a setter, led the Greyhounds to a 5-1 record last week including
the championship of the Elizabethtown College Blue Jay Classic. In the six matches, Lawrence averaged
11.09 assists, 3.04 digs and 0.65 service aces while hitting .220 for the week. Lawrence committed
just two hitting errors in 41 chances last week. Lawrence, who was named
to the All-Tournament Team at the Blue Jay Classic, had a total of 15 service aces, six
blocks and 11 kills during the week. Moravian is 24-8 on the season, the squad’s
seventh straight 20-win season, and the Greyhounds will host Messiah College in a Commonwealth
Conference Semifinal on Wednesday, November 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Cupples, a linebacker who was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference
Honor Roll for the second straight week, led the Moravian defense with 11 tackles as the
Greyhounds posted a 28-7 victory over Albright in MAC action. Moravian, which entered the
game ranked 12th in the nation in rushing defense, allowed the Lions minus-12 yards rushing
and only 225 yards to the MAC’s second ranked offense. Cupples had
three solo tackles including one of Moravian’s eight tackles for loss. He also forced
a fumble on the fifth play of the game that Moravian’s Jarrod Pence (Livingston,
NJ/Livingston HS) ran 53 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Moravian, now 6-2
on the season, has a five-game winning streak, it’s longest since a five-game streak
in 1997, and the squad has clinched a .500 season, the 13th in head coach Scot
Dapp’s 16-year career. Coach Dapp is now within one victory
of 100 in his career. The Greyhounds will return to action in their final MAC game of the
season on Saturday, November 9th when the squad travels to Susquehanna University for a
1:00 p.m. kickoff in Selinsgrove, PA.
Shannon, a midfielder, led Moravian to a 3-0 record last week including
a 3-2 overtime victory over Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action as the
Greyhounds clinched their third straight Commonwealth Conference Playoff appearance. Shannon opened
the week with both goals in a 2-1 victory over the University of Scranton and he added
a pair of assists in a 6-1 win over DeSales University. In the match at Widener, Shannon scored
the tying goal with 6:48 left to play in regulation. For the season, Shannon has
five goals and three assists for 13 points. Moravian is 10-7-2 on the season and will travel
to Elizabethtown College on Wednesday, November 6th for a Commonwealth Conference Semifinal
match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
