MORAVIAN TO INDUCT SEVEN INTO ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME FRIDAY
DENISE TORMA NAMED HERBSTMAN AWARD WINNER

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Dan Bloom (Newark, DE), Katherine Beck DeKorte (Lehighton, PA), James Lasko (Bethlehem, PA), John Makuvek (Bethlehem, PA), Michelle Ann Betz Reichenbach (Allentown, PA), Stephen A. “Doc” Sydorak (deceased, formerly of Bethlehem, PA) and James Walters (Glen Rock, NJ) make up the class of 2002 that will be inducted into the Moravian College Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, November 15th.

Also being honored at the 2002 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be Dr. Denise Torma (Bethlehem, PA) with the Robert Martin Herbstman Award and the 1991-92 women’s basketball team.

Bloom, who graduated in 1987, was a member of the men’s soccer team for four years. He finished his career third all-time with 36 career goals and fourth all-time with 83 career points. Bloom was a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America Regional All-American and a three-time All-Middle Atlantic Conference First Team All-Star. He was a three-time Team Offensive Most Valuable Player and as a senior he was the Team MVP. Bloom received the Greyhound Award as Moravian’s Outstanding Senior Male Athlete in 1987. Bloom works for Printpak, Inc in New Castle, Delaware. He lives in Newark, Delaware with his wife Melissa and their four children.

DeKorte, a 1992 graduate, lettered four years in women’s basketball at Moravian. While playing at Moravian, she set school records with 1,936 career points and 1,014 career rebounds. She was a two-time Kodak All American and the 1991-1992 Kodak Division III Player of the Year. DeKorte led the Greyhounds to the National Championship game in 1991-92 when the team was 31-2. She was a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference All-Star, MAC Southeast and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference South Player of the Year in 1991-92, and the ECAC Rookie of the Year in 1988-89. She also led Moravian to the MAC Championships in the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons. In the 1988-89 season, DeKorte led Moravian to the ECAC Tournament and as a sophomore, junior and senior she helped the team get to the NCAA Tournament. In 1992, she received the Greyhound Award as Moravian’s Outstanding Senior Female Athlete. DeKorte resides in Lehighton, Pennsylvania with her husband, Todd and their three children.

Lasko graduated from Moravian in 1986 and earned three varsity letters in football after transferring to the school. He was the first Greyhound player to reach 1,000 receiving yards in a season and he set the school record for 13 receptions in a single game. In 1985, he set school records with 55 receptions, 1,144 yards and 20.8 yards per reception. Lasko also set the school record with 127.1 yards per game average in 1985. He has 84 career receptions to go along with 1,585 career yards. He also set the school records with 18.9 yards per reception in his career, 58.7 yards per game and 10 touchdowns. In 1985, Lasko was a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Star First Team, the All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference South All-Star team, the MAC All-Academic team, and was an Associated Press Little All-American Honorable Mention. Currently, Lasko is an Assistant Vice-President for Guardian and lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with his wife Carol and their two children.

Makuvek was the head men’s soccer coach at Moravian for 24 seasons. His teams posted a record of 219 wins, 134 losses, and 31 ties from 1968-1991. He led the men’s soccer team to nine Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournaments, the 1982 NCAA Tournament and the 1983 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship. Makuvek has been the head golf coach at Moravian since 1968 and he has a record of 300 wins and 197 losses heading into the 2002-2003 season. Makuvek, who is retired as professor emeritus, also served as Athletic Director from 1992-1996. He resides in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with his wife Louise and they have three children.

Reichenbach, a 1989 graduate of Moravian, lettered four years in track and field. She is the outdoor record holder in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4X100 meter relay. She is a two-time MAC Champion and an All-American in the 4X100 meter relay. Reichenbach is the indoor record holder in the 60 meters, 300 meters and 4X100 meter relay. She was a three-time MAC Champion in the 60 meters, a two-time MAC Champion in the 300 meters, an MAC Champion in the 4X100 meter relay and the 4X400 meter relay. She was the Most Valuable Female Athlete in Track in 1989. Reichenbach lives in Allentown, Pennsylvania with her husband Daniel ’91, a member of the Moravian Hall of Fame last year, and their four children.

Sydorak, who graduated from Moravian in 1943, was a four-year standout on the football team and a two-year letterwinner on the baseball team while at the Bethlehem school. He played professional football for the Boston Yanks and Providence Steamrollers of the All-America Conference. Sydorak was a teacher and head football and baseball coach at Sayre High School, Sayre, Pennsylvania from 1945-1947. He was an assistant football coach at Moravian College from 1955-1959 and then was the head football coach at Liberty High School from 1959-1962. He worked in the Bethlehem Area School District and is survived by his wife Marianne, who resides in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and their two children. Sydorak’s son Stephen will accept his honor.

After transferring to Moravian, Walters, a 1984 graduate, was a three-year letterwinner on the men’s basketball team. He set the Moravian College record for career assists with 405. He also scored 630 career points. He was a member of the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest All-Star in the 1983-1984 season. Walters was also the team captain in that same season. In 1983, he helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament. Walters also helped his team win the ECAC New York Metro Region Championship in 1983-1984. Walters is self-employed as a futures trader in New York City. He resides in Glen Rock, New Jersey with his wife, Linda.

Torma, who graduated in 1977, was a four-year letterwinner in badminton, a three-year letterwinner in volleyball, and she participated in tennis for one season. She was the badminton Most Valuable Player and the team captain in both 1976 and 1977. In 1977, Torma was the volleyball team captain and team MVP. She was also a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Conference Team. She received the Greyhound Award as Moravian’s Outstanding Senior Female Athlete in 1977. Currently, Torma is the Director of Research and Evaluation for the East Penn School District. She resides in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The 1991-92 women’s basketball team posted an overall record of 31-2, won the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and hosted the NCAA Division III Final Four before losing to Alma College in the National Championship game.
