BORTZ & HENNESSY NAMED COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE PLAYER & PITCHER OF THE WEEK

ANNVILLE, PA --- Sophomore shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) and freshman pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) of the Moravian College softball team have been named the Commonwealth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week for their performances last week.

Bortz and Hennessy helped the Greyhounds to a 6-3 record last week as the team completed its spring trip to Virginia and Maryland.

Bortz hit .560 for the week with 14 hits in 25 at-bats in the second spot in the line-up. Bortz also scored six runs and drove in four more. She added a double, a triple, five walks, two sacrifices and two stolen bases. Bortz had a .680 slugging percentage and a .633 on-base percentage for the week. In the field, Bortz had 16 putouts, 13 assists and three errors in 32 chances.

Hennessy had a 3-2 week on the mound. In her two losses, a 1-0 decision to Christopher Newport University, and a 4-0 loss to #7 Salisbury (MD) University, Hennessy allowed just one earned run. Hennessy finished the week 1.00 ERA, allowing four earned runs in 28 innings pitched. She gave up just 25 hits and five walks while striking out 39 batters. In the loss to Salisbury, Hennessy had ten strikeouts and she tied the school record with 11 strikeouts in a 3-2 victory over King’s College. Opponents hit just .229 off Hennessy last week with four extra base hits (all doubles). Hennessy also had nine assists in the field and was 1-for-6 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

Moravian is 9-3 on the year and will open its 2003 home season on Saturday, March 22nd in a non-conference doubleheader with Haverford College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
