TRIO NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Christina Scherwin (Denmark) from the women’s outdoor track & field team, senior Todd Edwards (Conyngham, PA/Hazleton HS) of the men’s tennis squad and senior Jeff Meila (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) from the baseball team have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Scherwin was again the only competitor not from a Division I school in the event and she is now provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the event. Moravian will compete at the Lafayette Invitational on Saturday, April 19th.

Edwards, who plays first doubles and third singles for the Greyhounds, helped Moravian post a 2-0 record last week. Edwards won both of his singles matches in straight sets and he partnered with junior Jason Toedter (Easton, PA/Easton HS) for one doubles win. Moravian is 7-4 on the season and 5-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Greyhounds can clinch their third straight trip to the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs with a victory on Monday, April 14th in a MAC Commonwealth match at Elizabethtown College beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Meila, a catcher, helped the Greyhounds to a 1-1 record last week while hitting .571. Meila had four hits in seven at-bats during the two games with two RBIs. Meila drove in the winning run in Moravian’s 4-3 victory at Messiah College to help the Greyhounds earn a split of the Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. Meila had 13 putouts and one assist in 14 chances in the field last week. The Greyhounds had five other games either postponed or cancelled due to weather during the week. Moravian is 10-8 overall and 8-4 in the Commonwealth Conference.
