TRIO NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Kim Hughes (Manasquan, NJ/St. Rose HS) from
the women’s basketball team, sophomore Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee
HS) of the women’s indoor track and field squad and sophomore Brandon
Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) from the men’s basketball squad
have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances
last week.
Hughes, a guard, led the Greyhounds to a 2-0 week while averaging 19.5
points and 4.5 assists per game. Hughes started the week with 20 points
and five assists in Moravian’s 67-49 victory versus Susquehanna University. Hughes added
19 points, four assists and two steals in the Greyhounds’ 69-48 victory versus Juniata
College that helped clinch the team’s home playoff game. For the week, Hughes shot
71.4 percent (15 of 21) from the floor, 77.8 percent (7 of 9) behind the three-point line
and 100 percent (2 of 2) at the foul line while playing 25 minutes in each game. Moravian
is 19-6 overall this season and will host Lebanon Valley College in a Commonwealth Conference
Semifinal on Wednesday, February 26th at 7:00 p.m.
McGarvie, a distance runner, won her events to lead the Greyhounds at
the Keogh Invitational hosted by Haverford College. The meet was Moravian's last tune-up
before the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships this weekend at Susquehanna University. McGarvie captured
first in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:49.5.
Zaleski, a forward, led the Greyhounds to a 1-1 week and third place
finish in the Commonwealth Conference regular season. Zaleski had his
seventh double-double of the season to begin the week, netting 22 points and grabbing 15
rebounds in Moravian’s 73-67 loss to Susquehanna University. Zaleski added
12 points and four rebounds in the Greyhounds’ 76-55 victory over Juniata College.
For the week, Zaleski shot 41.4 percent (12 of 29) from the floor and
he connected on 90 percent (9 of 10) of his free throw attempts, while averaging 33 minutes
per game. Moravian is 16-9 overall this season and will travel to Elizabethtown College
for a Commonwealth Conference Semifinal on Wednesday, February 26th at 7:30 p.m.
