FOUR GREYHOUNDS NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Becky Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) of the women’s tennis team, freshman Amanda Gaun (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS) from the field hockey squad, sophomore Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS) of the football team and junior Todd Solecitto (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) from the golf squad have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Deringer, Moravian’s number two singles player and part of the Greyhounds’ second doubles team, posted a 4-1 singles mark and a 1-0 doubles record last week. Deringer earned both a singles and a doubles victory in Moravian’s 6-3 victory over rival Muhlenberg College, and she had a singles win in the Greyhounds’ 8-1 triumph over Albright College. Deringer posted a 2-1 record in the “B” Draw Singles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Tournament hosted by Mary Washington College over the weekend. Moravian is 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth this season, and the squad will return to action on Tuesday, September 30th in a MAC Commonwealth match at Lebanon Valley College beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Gaun, the Greyhounds goalie, earned her first collegiate shutout last week with a 1-0 victory over Albright in Commonwealth Conference action. Gaun made four saves after making a school record 33 stops in her previous start. Gaun also had six saves in Moravian’s 1-0 loss at Alvernia College last week. Moravian has a 3-6 overall record this season and will return to action on Wednesday, October 1st in a non-conference match at the University of Scranton beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Cline, a linebacker, led the Moravian defense with ten tackles, and he added a pass break-up and a blocked field goal attempt in the Greyhounds’ 42-7 MAC victory over Lebanon Valley College. Cline had four solo stops and blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter. Moravian is 2-2 overall and in the MAC this season. The Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday, October 4th in a MAC game at King’s College beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Solecitto averaged 73.5 strokes per round last week while helping the Greyhounds to win the Moravian Fall Invitational and tie for second at the Susquehanna University Fall Invitational. Solecitto fired a round of 74, which tied him for fourth of 95 golfers, on the par 71 Southmoore Golf Course in the Moravian tournament, and he first an 18-hole total of 73, which also tied him for fourth of 95 golfers, on the par 72 Edgewood-in-the-Pines Golf Club at the Susquehanna Tournament. The Greyhounds will return to action on Monday, October 13th in the Lebanon Valley College Invitational at the Lebanon Country Club beginning at 12:30 p.m.
