FOUR GREYHOUNDS HONORED AS MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Junior Brianne DeVries (Stockton, NJ/Delaware Valley HS) from the women’s soccer team, sophomore Tyler Chomik (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and senior John Panikiewsky (Carteret, NJ/Carteret HS) of the football squad and sophomore Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) from the men’s cross country team have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

DeVries, a forward, scored a trio of assists to help Moravian to a 4-0 victory over Elizabethtown College last week, clinching a berth in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference Playoffs. The victory over the Blue Jays was the first for the Greyhounds in nine tries and Elizabethtown had outscored Moravian, 28-7, in the previous eight matches. DeVries assisted on the first three goals of the match. The Greyhounds, ranked sixth in the region by the NCAA, fell to the University of Scranton, 2-0, in their only other match last week. Moravian is 9-2-3 overall and will host rival Muhlenberg College on Wednesday, October 29th at 3:00 p.m.

Chomik, a defensive back, put Moravian’s first points of the game on the board in a 26-14 loss to Lycoming College with a 96-yard kickoff return in the third quarter. The return was the second longest in Moravian history. Chomik finished with two kickoff returns for 114 yards, and he also fair caught a punt in the game. Chomik also had three tackles, an interception he returned 13 yards and two pass break-ups.

Panikiewsky led the Moravian defense with 14 tackles in the loss to Lycoming. Panikiewsky had one and a half sacks in the game for a loss of 15 yards as he played at linebacker for a majority of the contest instead of his normal strong safety position. Moravian is 3-4 overall and in the MAC. The team will host Widener University on Saturday, November 1st in an MAC game at 1:00 p.m.

Rarick won the 2003 Kutztown University Maroon & Gold Cross Country Invitational with a time of 16:33 over the 5,000-meter course to lead Moravian to a first place team finish in the seven-team race. There were 47 runners in the competition. The Greyhounds will compete at the 2003 Middle Atlantic Corporation Championships on Saturday, November 1st hosted by DeSales University in Center Valley.
