BORTZ & HENNESSY SELECTED AS COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE
PLAYER & PITCHER OF THE WEEK

ANNVILLE, PA --- Junior shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) of the Moravian College softball team has been named the first Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week for the 2004 season announced Monday while sophomore pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) was honored as the Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week for her performance last week.

Bortz led Moravian to a 3-1 record last week at the Atlantic versus East Challenge hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College. Bortz hit .500 for the week (seven of 14) and extended her school record hitting streak to 21 games dating back to the second game of a doubleheader at Messiah College on April 15, 2003. Bortz began the season with a two-for-three performance with a run scored and two stolen bases in a 3-2 loss to Christopher Newport (VA) University to open the season. She was two-for-three with a run scored and a stolen base in a 6-3, eight-inning victory versus Mary Washington (VA) College. Bortz was one-for-four with a run and a stolen base in the Greyhounds’ 4-2 victory versus Huntingdon (AL) College, and she finished the week with a two-for-four performance and two runs scored in a 4-2 victory over Chowan (NC) College. Bortz was also perfect in the field at her shortstop position last week with eight putouts and seven assists.

Hennessy was on the mound for a portion of all three Moravian wins last week, earning two complete game victories and a save. Hennessy began her sophomore season with a 6-3, eight-inning victory over Mary Washington. Hennessy allowed three unearned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out a school record 12 batters. She earned her first career save in Moravian’s 4-2 win versus Huntingdon. Hennessy pitched the final inning, striking out two of the three batters she faced. Hennessy closed out the week with a 4-2 victory over Chowan. She allowed two runs, just one earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out five batters. Hennessy also had a putout and two assists in the field last week.

Moravian is 3-1 overall this season and will return to action on Friday, March 12th at the 2004 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Leadoff Classic. The Greyhounds’ first game will be at 2:30 p.m. against defending NCAA Division III National Champion (Central (IA) College.
