CASTAGNA NAMED TO CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FIRST TEAM
WILLIAMSPORT, PA --- Senior Lauren Castagna (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) from
the Moravian College women’s tennis team has been named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic
All-District II College Division At-Large First Team selected by the College Sports Information
Directors of America.
By making the All-District First Team, Castagna is now forwarded onto
the national ballot to try for CoSIDA Academic All-American® accolades, which will
be announced on Thursday, June 17th. The At-Large program includes the sports of fencing,
golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo
for men and women, crew and field hockey for women and volleyball and wrestling for men.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must maintain
at least a 3.20 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter
or significant reserve. The College Division is made up of all the NCAA Division II and
III Schools in the nation as well as all NAIA schools. Student-athletes from NCAA Division
I schools are named to the University Division Teams. District II is made up of schools
from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Castagna helped Moravian win its fourth consecutive Middle Atlantic
Conference Championship last fall and post a 15-1 record. She was 14-4 at third singles
with an 8-3 mark in MAC competition. Castagna won 2003 MAC Doubles Championship
with partner junior Becky Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS), and the
duo was 16-3 at first doubles. Castagna was named to Commonwealth All-Conference
Second Team in October.
Over the last four years, Castagna has helped Moravian to four MAC titles
and a 58-3 record. She posted a career singles record of 37-7 and a 26-7 mark in doubles
action. Castagna was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete
in 2002, and she was a member of MAC All-Academic Team three times.
Castagna will now try to become the 27th CoSIDA Academic All-American
in Moravian history and the 23rd in the last 11 years.
