APPLEGATE AND WEILER NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Freshman Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) from
the women’s basketball team and senior Steve Weiler (Edgewater Park, NJ/Burlington
City HS) of the men’s basketball squad have been named the Moravian College
Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Applegate, a forward, helped the Greyhounds to a 2-0 mark last week,
including a 70-47 victory over Albright College to clinch a berth in the Commonwealth Conference
Tournament. She had 12 points, two assists, and one block in Moravian’s win over
Albright. Applegate also scored a career high 22 points and grabbed a
career best 12 rebounds, and had three blocked shots and one steal to lead Moravian to
an 81-68 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference action to close
out the 2003-2004 regular season. Applegate’s 22 points came off
a seven of eight performance from the floor and an eight of eight afternoon at the foul
line. For the week, Applegate was 11 of 15 (73.3 %) from the field and
12 of 14 (85.7 %) from the foul line. Moravian is 17-8 overall and 10-4 in Commonwealth
Conference action. The Greyhounds will host Lebanon Valley College in the semifinal game
on Wednesday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m.
Weiler closed out his career with the Greyhounds by scoring 19 points
in both games last week. In a 80-72 loss to Albright, Weiler also added
three three-pointers, four rebounds, and three assists for Moravian. In his last game of
his career, Weiler had three three-point field goals, two assists, two
steals, and one rebound in an 85-77 loss to Elizabethtown. Weiler’s combined
38 points last week came off a 15 of 32 (46.9 %) from the field, 6 of 16 (37.5 %) from
three-point range, and 2 of 2 (100 %) at the foul line. The Moravian men’s basketball
team finished the 2003-2004 with a 10-15 overall record and a 2-12 slate in the Commonwealth
Conference.
