MORAVIAN
SENIOR CHRISTINA SCHERWIN PLACES 29TH IN JAVELIN PRELIMINARIES AT 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES
COMPETING FOR DENMARK
ATHENS, GREECE --- Moravian
College senior Christina Scherwin (Copenhagen, Denmark) competed in
javelin at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece for her native Denmark on WednesdAy,
placing 13th of 22 competitors in Group B and 29th of 44 overall. Scherwin's best
throw of the competition came on her third and final attempt with a toss of 56.86 meters
(186 feet, six inches).
Scherwin began
the competition in Athens with a toss of 56.79 meters and her second throw was 55.26
meters.
Scherwin,
who won the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Division III national championship in the event while
participating for the Greyhounds, hit the automatic qualifying standard with a new Danish
record of 59.36 meters (194 feet, nine inches) at a Javelin Fest 2004 at Yale University
on July 24th. Sherwin had to wait until Friday, July 30th to see if
she would be allowed to compete in the Olympics since Denmark had stated the distance
needed to be met by July 1st. However, an ankle injury had slowed Scherwin in
May and June, and the Danish Athletic and Olympic Committee accepted her distance and
allowed her to make the trip to Athens.
Scherwin also
competed at the 2004 Danish National Championships on August 6th and defended her title
in the javelin.
Following the closing ceremonies
in Athens, Scherwin will return to Moravian to complete her final semester
of academics and finish her degree in economics.
