32 GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO MASCAC SPRING ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

ANNVILLE, PA --- The Moravian College spring athletic teams had 32 members named to the 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Spring Academic Honor Roll announced Tuesday with at least one member from seven of the eight spring sports sponsored by Moravian.

The Honor Roll, which has a total of 464 student-athletes on it, comprises those student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) or higher and completed the playing season in good standing.

The women’s track and field team had 12 honorees while the softball squad had five. The golf and women’s lacrosse teams each had four honorees while the men’s track and field team and baseball squad each had three members of their team on the MASCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll. The men’s lacrosse team had one student-athlete honored.

Leading the selections for the women’s track team were senior Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) and sophomores Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) and Suzanne Tamlyn (Wapingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS), who all won title at the 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships to lead Moravian to its 13th straight team title. Mullins won the 10,000-meter run while Recker captured first place in the 100-meter dash, and she was part of Moravian’s first-place 4x100-meter relay squad with Tamlyn. Mullins also earned All-Conference honors in the 5,000-meter run while Recker and Tamlyn were both All-Conference in the 200-meter dash. Tamlyn also earned All-Conference accolades in the 400-meter dash.

In addition to the trio, eight of Moravian’s other nine women’s track & field honorees on the MASCAC Academic Honor Roll earned All-Conference honors with top six finishes at the 2005 MAC Championships. They were seniors Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), who earned All-Conference honors in the hammer and discus throws, Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS), who was All-Conference in both the 800 and 1,500-meter runs, Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS), who was All-Conference in the 1,500 meters, and Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS), who earned All-Conference honors in the 100 and 400-meter hurdle events, juniors Rebecca Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS), who was All-Conference in the pole vault), Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) and Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS), who were both All-Conference in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and sophomore Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS), who was All-Conference in the 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Ashley McCuen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS) was also named to the MASCAC Academic Honor Roll.

Leading the softball team’s selections were All-Americans senior shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) and junior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS). Bortz led Moravian with a .428 average with a team high 62 hits, 30 runs, six doubles, five triples and 21 RBIs. Bortz has also added two sacrifice flies, seven stolen bases and 15 walks. Bortz, a three-time All-American, is the first player in school history to reach 200 career hits and had 253 in her career. She led the team with 79 assists in the field and had 307 assists in her career, second all-time. Bortz was named to the NFCA/Louisville Slugger Division III All-American Second Team, the NFCA All-East Region First Team, the NCAA Division III Salisbury Regional All-Tournament Team, the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year and the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team.

Hennessy was 29-6 in the circle this season, a school record for wins, with a 0.64 ERA, 18 shutouts, three saves, three no-hitters, 277 strikeouts, all season school records, and just 131 hits, 44 walks and 37 runs (23 earned) allowed in a school record 250 innings. Hennessy continued to collect honors being named to the NFCA/Louisville Slugger Division III All-American Second Team, the NFCA All-East Region First Team, the NCAA Division III Salisbury Regional All-Tournament Team, and the Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Year, the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team and the Commonwealth Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player. Hennessy had three this, a runs and an RBI in just 13 at-bats.

Also being honored from the softball team were senior outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East HS) and sophomores outfielder/pitcher LeeAnna Roberts (Meshoppen, PA/Elk Lake HS) and first baseman Rebecca DeJulio (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart HS). Cianfichi had 18 hits, 12 runs, 11 RBIs and three stolen bases, and Cianfichi became the 20th player in school history to reach 100 hits with 102 in her career. Roberts had a 1-0 record with a 2.00 ERA and three strikeouts in seven innings of action, and she added 22 hits, 11 RBIs, 14 runs, a double, a triple, a home run and a .310 average. DeJulio had nine hits, a double and four RBIs.

Three of Moravian’s four golf team MASCAC honorees participated in the first-ever Commonwealth Conference Championship at the Hershey Country Club in which the Greyhounds placed second. Sophomore Brian Bergstol (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS) finished in a tie for 12th place with a tournament score of 165 after a second round score of 82. Sophomore Thad Miller (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) was tied for 20th at 170 after a second 18-hole round of 88 while junior John Donofrio (Easton, PA/Easton HS) finished in a tie for 26th with a two-day score of 171. Donofrio had an 85 on the second day of the tournament.

Bergstol had a season average of 76.6 strokes per round with a low score of 70 at the Moravian Fall Invitational at Southmoore Golf Course. He made it to Moravian’s record books having the second lowest average. Miller sported an average of 81.6 with a low round of 75 also at the Moravian Fall Invitational while Donofrio averaged 81.9 strokes per round with a 78 at the Moravian Spring Invitational. Also making the MASCAC Academic Honor Roll was sophomore John Gilbert (Allentown, PA/Freedom HS), who played five rounds and averaged 83.0 strokes per round.

The Moravian women’s lacrosse team was 3-12 in its third NCAA season and had four members named to the MASCAC Academic Honor Roll. Junior defender Lauren Johnston (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Upper Moreland HS) contributed 42 ground balls, eight draw controls, and eight caused turnovers while sophomore defender Jenna Abramson (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) contributed 18 ground balls, 17 draw controls and nine caused turnovers. Sophomore defender Jennifer Connolly (Manchester, NH/Manchester West HS) had two ground balls while senior attacks Hayley Zamek (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) had one ground ball.

Leading the men’s track and field team, who placed 4th in the MAC Outdoor Championships, was senior Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS), who earned All-Conference honors with a second place finish in the 100-meter dash and a fourth place in the 200-meter dash. Juniors William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) also competed at the MAC Championships with Shimer running in the 10,000 meters and Rarick participating in the 1,500-meter run.

The baseball team’s three honorees included juniors second baseman Andrew Wayne (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) and designated hitter Bryan Wolf (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) and sophomore pitcher Todd Remaley (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton HS). Wayne had eight hits with five runs, one double, and two RBIs while Wolf had seven hits with six runs, eight walks three doubles and four RBIs. Remaley was 1-1 on the season with six strikeouts, and nine walks in 6 1/3 innings to help the Greyhounds to a 10-26 overall record.

Sophomore midfielder Tristan Flis (Harleysville, PA/North Penn HS) was the lone member of the MASCAC Academic Honor Roll from the Moravian men’s lacrosse team. Flis scored four goals while helping the Greyhounds to a 6-11 record in just their second season as a varsity sport.
