21 GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO MASCAC WINTER ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

ANNVILLE, PA --- The Moravian College winter athletic teams had 21 members named to the 2004-2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Winter Academic Honor Roll announced Tuesday with at least one member from each of the four winter sports.

The Honor Roll, which has a total of 343 student-athletes on it, comprises those student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) or higher and completed the playing season in good standing.

The women’s track and field team had 13 honorees while the men’s track and field team had four, and the men’s and women’s basketball teams each had two members of their team on the MASCAC Winter Academic Honor Roll.

Leading the selections for the women’s track team, who won the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships, were seniors Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee SH). Anderson competed in the open weight throw and threw 14.27 meters (46 feet, 10 inches) while McGarvie won the 800-meter run in 2:19.58 at the MAC Indoor Championships. She went on to the 2005 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships. Junior Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/ Voorhees SH) placed sixth in a time of 10:33.38 while senior Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) was third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:32.03 and junior Rebecca Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS) finished second in the pole vault, clearing 3.04 meters (ten feet) all at the MAC Indoor Championships. Sophomore Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS). Recker had won the 55-meter dash at the MAC Indoor Championships with a Moravian College and record time of 7.26 seconds and also went on to the 2005 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships.

Also earning spots on the MASCAC Winter Academic Honor Roll from the women’s track and field squad were seniors Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS), and Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) junior Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS), and sophomores Ashley McCuen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS), Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS), Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS), and Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS).

Leading the men’s track and field team, who placed 4th in the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships, were junior William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and senior Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS). Shimer placed 12th in the 5,000-meter run at the MAC Championships while Rarick teamed up with fellow senior Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) and two other teammates to take sixth with a time of 10:52.10 in the 4,000-meter distance relay team. Senior Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) placed fourth in the finals of the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.67 seconds.

The Moravian men’s basketball team posted a record of 7-18 overall record. Leading the greyhounds was junior forward Tyler Tripucka (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge HS). He had ten points this season with eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Also making the Academic Honor Roll was sophomore forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS). He contributed 80 points, 67 rebounds, five assists, six steals, nine three-pointers, and 20 blocked shots this season.

The women’s basketball team had an outstanding record of 24-6 and was the runners-up in both the Commonwealth Conference tournament and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Southern Tournament. Leading the team was junior forward Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS). She scored 59 points, grabbed 47 rebounds, and had eight assists, nine steals, and six blocked shots this season. Junior guard Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) had 65 points, 23 rebounds, 19 assists, and nine steals.
