22 GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO MIDDLE ATLANTIC STATES COLLEGIATE
ATHLETIC CORPORATION WINTER ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
ANNVILLE, PA --- The Moravian College winter athletic teams had 22 members named to the
2005-2006 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Winter Academic Honor
Roll announced Friday with at least one member from each of the four winter sports.
The Honor Roll, which has a total of 367 student-athletes on it, comprises those student-athletes
of sophomore class standing or higher who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered
a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) or higher and completed the playing
season in good standing.
The women’s track and field team had 11 honorees while the men’s track and
field team had five, the women’s basketball team had four and the men’s basketball
team had two members of their team on the MASCAC Winter Academic Honor Roll.
Leading the selections for the women’s track team, were seniors Alexis
Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/ Voorhees HS) and Rebecca Moore (Easton,
PA/Easton HS). Vergalla had a time of 11:59.09 in the 3000m
run and 5:53.43 in the 1 mile run while Moore had a 9-00.00 jump in
the pole vault and also competed in the 440y dash, 400m dash, 200m dash, and 60y dash.
Junior Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) had a time of 7.31
in the 55-meter dash at the MAC Indoor Championships. She also competed in the 60m dash,
200m dash, and 220y dash. Senior Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson
HS) had a time of 20:32.74 in the 5000m run.
Also earning spots on the MASCAC Winter Academic Honor Roll from the women’s track
and field squad were juniors Ashley McCuen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS), Suzanne
Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS), Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall
HS), Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS), and Jennifer
Connolly (Weare, NH/Manchester West HS), and sophomores Theresa Zataveski
(Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy), and Christina Roccamo (Quakertown,
PA/Quakertown HS).
Leading the men’s track and field team was sophomore Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville,
PA/Boyertown Area HS), who competed in the 55m hurdles with a best time of 7.64
at the NCAA Indoor Championships where he earned All-American honors with an eighth place
finish. Tussey also competed in the 60m hurdles and had the best time
of 7.34, and the 60y hurdles, with a time of 7.70 both at the Lafayette College Invitational.
Seniors William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and Greg Rarick
(Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) were also on the squad. Shimer had
his best time of 16:50.11 in the Susquehanna Orange & Maroon Classic in the open
5000m run, while Rarick had the best time for Moravian in the open 3000m
run with a time of 9:25.09. He also ran the mile run and had a personal best time of
4:50.51.
Sophomore Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had the best
time in the 5000m run at the Middle Atlantic Conference meet with a time of 16:18.15. He
also runs the mile run and had a personal best of 4:45.69. Sophomore Vince Pagano
(Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin HS) had a time of 59.91 in the 440y dash at the
Lafayette College Invitational and a time of 58.04 in the 400m dash.
The women’s basketball team had an outstanding record of 21-7 and was the runners-up
in both the Commonwealth Conference tournament. This was the first year that they made
it to the NCAA Division III tournament. Leading the team was senior forward Heather
MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS). She scored 43 points, grabbed 34 rebounds,
and had five assists, two steals, and two blocked shots this season. Senior guard Dianna
DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) had 13 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists,
three steals, and one block. Sophomore guard Megan Kocon (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty
HS) contributed 21 points, one rebound, two assists, and two steals, while classmate Sara
Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathon Dayton HS) had 126 points, 38 rebounds, 62
assists, 29 steals, 23 three-pointers, and one blocked shot.
The Moravian men’s basketball team posted a record of 9-16 overall record. Leading
the Greyhounds was senior forward Tyler Tripucka (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge HS).
He had 13 points this season with 15 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Also making the Academic Honor Roll was junior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville,
PA/Coatesville HS). He contributed 136 points, 110 rebounds, 17 assists, 15 steals,
five three-pointers, and 23 blocked shots this season.
