THREE MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED
WITH LVAIAW AWARDS
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Three Moravian College student-athletes, seniors
Megan Collins (Rehoboth Beach, DE/Ceasar Rodney HS)
and Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS)
and junior Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS),
were honored with the Outstanding Athlete Award for their sport
at the 2006 Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
for Women Annual Awards luncheon hosted by Moravian Tuesday.
The LVAIAW is made up of seven schools, Cedar Crest College, DeSales
University, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, Kutztown University
of Pennsylvania, Moravian and Muhlenberg College. For pictures from

Collins
(pictured at right) earned her award in the sport of soccer after
leading Moravian to a 16-6-1 record and its first-ever NCAA Division
III National Championship Tournament appearance. Collins,
the 2005 Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year, netted a team
high 16 goals and added six assists for 38 points and was named
a National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Second Team
All-American, the first in Moravian's history. Collins
had eight game-winning goals, and she finished her career second
all-time at Moravian with 98 points on 41 goals and 16 assists in
four seasons. Collins was on the Commonwealth All-Conference
First Team in 2005 and 2003 and was on the Second Team in 2004 and
2002.
Hennessy
was honored for her prowess on the softball diamond, and she was
also named Moravian's Outstanding Athlete Award winner as each school
selected on senior student-athlete to be honored. Moravian is currently
30-6 on the year. Hennessy, a two-time National
Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-American, is 19-4
in the circle this season with a 0.37 ERA, 13 shutouts, five saves,
two no-hitters, 209 strikeouts and just 65 hits, 46 walks and 15
runs (nine earned) in 169 2/3 innings of action. Hennessy,
who already owns every Moravian pitching record, is continuing to
climb the NCAA Division III record books. She is 7th in career strikeouts
with 818, tied for 2nd in shutouts with 50, tied for 8th in wins
with 86, tied for 9th in career ERA at 0.86, 9th in innings pitched
with 754.2, tied for 11th in complete games with 96, 16th in games
started with 105, and tied for 15th games with 120. Hennessy,
who has been the Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Week five
times this season and Eastern College Athletic Conference Division
III South Pitcher of the Week once, has one hit at the plate this
spring and has scored 11 runs.
Applegate
helped Moravian's women's basketball team to a 21-7 record this
season and a return to the NCAA Division III National Championship
Tournament. Applegate, who was named the Commonwealth
Conference Player of the Year and to the Commonwealth All-Conference
First Team, the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball December
Team of the Month, the Women's DIII News December Player
of the Month, the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Team of
the Year and the Lehigh Valley Small College Women's Basketball
Player of the Year, led Moravian at 19.1 points and 7.6 rebounds
per game. Applegate was also named to the Kodak/Women’s
Basketball Coaches Association/ Kodak and WDIII News Honorable Mention
All-American squads. Applegate, who was ranked
in the top 25 nationally in field goal percentage, also added 37
assists, 43 steals and 26 blocked shots while shooting 55.7 percent
(192 of 345) from the field, 55.6 percent on three-pointers (five
of nine) and 76.4 percent at the foul line (146 of 191). Applegate,
who broke the school record for free throws attempted in a season,
became the 17th player in Moravian history to score 1,000 career
points in the final regular season game and has 1,075 points in
her career.
