52 GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO 2005 MIDDLE ATLANTIC STATES COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CORPORATION FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

ANNVILLE, PA --- The Moravian College fall athletic teams had 52 members named to the 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Fall Academic Honor Roll with at least one member from all eight of Moravian’s fall sports.

The MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll, which notes academic excellence by student-athletes, contains 690 honorees as announced by Executive Director Ken Andrews. The Honor Roll comprises those student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) or higher and completed the playing season in good standing. Student-athletes are selected from men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, volleyball, women’s tennis and men’s and women’s soccer.

The Moravian football team had 13 honorees, while the women’s tennis team had eight. The men’s soccer team and field hockey team each had seven members of their team honored, the women’s volleyball team have six, and the women’s cross country team had five athletes honored. The women’s soccer had four honorees and men’s cross country had two members on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Leading the selections from the football team, which posted a 7-4 record and won the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference Southwest Bowl Championship, were junior wide receiver Shawn Martell (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and senior quarterback Jerry Venturino (Hopatcong, NJ/Hopatcong HS). Martell scored four touchdowns this season, with 434 receiving yards on 26 receptions while Venturino completed 112 of 233 pass attempts for 1,705 yards and 15 touchdowns, and Venturino also scored five rushing touchdowns. Junior running back Marc Panepinto (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) had 439 rushing yards and three touchdowns while senior wide receiver Russell Demko (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) had eight catches for 133 yards.

Also earning spots on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll from the football squad were seniors wide receiver Andrew Mazurek (West Orange, NJ/West Orange HS), and offensive lineman Brenten Runne (Stanhope, NJ/Hopatcong HS), juniors defensive linemen Nick Feo (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) and offensive lineman Andy Remsing (Bath, PA/Northampton HS), and sophomores fullback Andrew Goodbred (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg HS), wide receiver Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS), quarterback Bradley Swartz (Temple, PA/Muhlenberg HS), defensive back Matthew Sheridan (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling HS), and tight end David Mann (Portsmouth, NH/Portsmouth HS).

The Moravian women’s tennis team had an overall record of 15-2 this year. Leading the Greyhounds on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll is sophomore Rebecca Angstadt (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg HS), who was 4-2 with in singles action. Senior Nicole Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS) had an 11-6 overall record at singles and a 10-2 second doubles record with sophomore partner Leah Bradshaw (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS).

Moravian’s other women’s tennis players on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll were senior Katie Cooke (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS) with a 11-1 sixth singles record, juniors Kristen Smith (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS), Courtney Hall (Denver, PA/Cocalico HS), and Margo Kokolus (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS), and sophomore Jennel Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS). Hall and Kokolus teamed up for a record of 11-7 at doubles while Yelito was 8-2 at fifth singles.

The Moravian men’s soccer team posted a 7-8-1 overall record. Leading the Greyhounds on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll is senior Ian Nuno (Middletown, DE/Caravel Academy HS). Other players that made it to the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll were seniors Casey Hoffman (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh HS), George Gray (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley HS), and Ryan Walker (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen HS), juniors Ken Wilson (Pittsgrove, NJ/Schalick HS), and Brian Tarulli (Bear Creek, PA/James Coughlin HS), and sophomore Daniel Scavone (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS).

The Greyhound field hockey team’s MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll honorees were led by sophomore defender Taranae Hashemi (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) who made one defensive save this fall. Joining Hashemi were senior defender Jill Brinckman (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS), who had two defensive saves, juniors Elyse Jurgen (York, PA/Red Lion HS), who had two goals and two assists, and Jennifer Gassner (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS), who had two goals and three assists, and sophomores Beverly Beaver (Merchantville, NJ/Pennsauken HS), who started in all 18 games, Erica Spatz (Pennsauken, PA/Pennsauken HS), who had one goal and two assists, and Jayme Baker (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh HS), who had six goals and two assists.

The Greyhound volleyball team posted a 21-10 mark this past fall. The Greyhounds were led on the court by All-Commonwealth Conference First Team senior middle hitter Lindsey Siracusa (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury HS). Siracusa led the Greyhounds with 112 blocks, 379 kills, 14 assists, 42 serve aces, and 59 digs. Junior outside hitter Kelly Bauer (Hellertown, PA/ Notre Dame HS), who was named to the Commonwealth All-Conference second team, had 410 kills, 27 assists, 41 serve aces, 352 digs, and 39 blocks. Junior setter Valerie Korsak (Coplay, PA/Whitehall HS) also contributed 137 kills, 1114 assists, 43 serve aces, 196 digs, and 53 blocks.

Joining these players on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll were junior Ashley Hugo (Bath, PA/Northampton HS), who contributed 190 digs, 15 serve aces, and 25 assists, and sophomores Katherine Perkins (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton HS), who added 50 kills, 29 assists, and 31 blocks, and Elisa Martin (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS), who had 136 digs, and 13 assists.

Leading the women’s cross country honorees were seniors Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS), and Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS). Bahnatka placed 14th in the MAC Championships while Vergalla placed 23rd. Joining these two women from the women’s cross country team was senior Alicia Hernandez (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS), junior Jen Connolly (Manchester, NH/Manchester West HS), and sophomore Christina Roccamo (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS).

The Moravian women’s soccer team posted a 16-6-1 overall mark this season making it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. Senior Erin Gonda (Bethlehem, PA/Salisbury HS), who was named an ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-American, led the Greyhounds on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll. She had three goals and one assist this season. Junior Alisha Davy (Oaklyn, NJ/Haddon Township HS) contributed two goals and five assists, and sophomores Jill Newswanger (Pine Grove, PA/Pine Grove HS), who had an assist, and Kelly Wight (Port Murray, NJ/West Morris Central HS), who made eight saves while in goal, also were honored on the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll.

The men’s cross country team was led by sophomore Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS), who placed 46th in the MAC Championships and 89th in the Regional meet. Senior William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), who finished 54th in the MAC Championships, was also named to the MASCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
