MORAVIAN TO INDUCT SIX INTO ATHLETIC HALL
OF FAME FRIDAY;
CAROLINE SMITH NAMED HERBSTMAN AWARD WINNER & 1993 FOOTBALL
TEAM TO BE HONORED
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Tracy Wartman Bozik (Bethlehem, PA);
Paul J. Calvo (Bethlehem, PA); Charles J. Hoch, Jr. (Allentown,
PA); Shane Hollawell, (Wall, NJ); Augustus “Gus” Rampone,
Jr. (deceased, Newton, NJ) and Melissa Newhard
Torba (Bethlehem, PA) make up the class of 2006 that will
be inducted into the Moravian College Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday,
October 27. Also being honored at the 2006 Hall of Fame Induction
Ceremony will be Caroline Smith (Washington, DC)
with the Robert Martin Herbstman Award and the 1993 football team.
Bozik, a 1996 graduate, was a member of both
the cross country and track teams from 1992 to 1996. While at Moravian,
Bozik was a six time All-American: twice in cross country, once
in indoor track and three times in outdoor track, setting the school
record in both the 1,500 and 3,000m runs. In 1994, she was the National
Champion in the NCCA Division III outdoor track & field 1,500m
run. That same year, Bozik won the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC)
Champion and the NCAA Division III Regional Individual Champion.
She was also a MAC Individual Champion in 1995. Bozik also participated
in the NCAA Division III National Championship during the 1993,
1994, and 1995 seasons. The Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics for Women (LVAIAW) honored Bozik as its cross country
athlete of the year in 1994 and 1995, track athlete of the year
in 1995 and 1996, and its overall athlete of the year in 1996. She
was also given the Greyhound Award for Moravian’s Outstanding
Senior Female Athlete in 1996. Bozik helped to lead the Greyhounds
to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships three times,
where they placed third in 1993 and 1995. She also was a member
of the indoor track & field team that won the MAC Championships
in 1993 and 1996 and of the outdoor track & field team that
swept the MAC Championships from 1993 to 1996. Also while at Moravian,
Bozik was a member of the Sigma Theta Chi sorority, Junior Class
Treasure and on the Dean’s List. She currently resides in
Bethlehem with her husband Marc Bozik and their two children Adrianna,
13, and Payton Sofia, 2. Bozik teaches at Forks Elementary School
in the Easton School District and is currently working on a children’s
accessory company with her husband called Fuzzleberry.
Calvo, who graduated from Moravian in 1952, played
both football and basketball for the Greyhounds. Due to a career
ending broken leg, Calvo only played football during the 1948 and
1949 seasons, but later went on to become an assistant coach from
1954 to 1971 under his brother Rocco. His time playing basketball
was also cut short, making the 1949-1950 season his last. Calvo
went on to a successful coaching career in basketball, heading the
program at Bethlehem Catholic from 1955 to 1969. During his tenure,
the Golden Hawks were 260-155 and won two PCIAA Class “B”
state championships in 1960 and 1962. Calvo was a member of the
Bethlehem City Council from 1972 to 1997 and served as president
for four years. In 1985, he was inducted in to the Lehigh Valley
Basketball Hall of Fame and in 1993, the Bethlehem Catholic Wall
of Fame. Calvo majored in Education at Moravian, and is now retired
from the Bethlehem Area School District. He lives in Bethlehem where
he and his wife of 52 years Agnes, who passed away in 2002, raised
their four daughters, Paula, Jane, Tina and Lisa. Paula is a 1973
Moravian graduate.
Hoch, a member of the class of 1991, ran for
the Greyhounds on both the cross country and track teams from 1987
to 1991. He was a three time All-American at the NCAA Division III
Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 800m race, placing
sixth in 1988, second in 1989 and second in 1990. At the MAC Indoor
Track & Field Championships, Hoch was a ten time honoree: three
times in the 800m race, three times in the 4x400m relay, three times
in the 4x800m relay and once in the 1,500m run. During the outdoor
track and field season, Hoch was an NCAA Division III All-American
along with his teammates in the 4x400 relay in 1991. He was also
a five-time All-MAC athlete: twice for the 800m race, twice for
the 1,500m run and once for the 4x400 relay. Hoch set a total of
six school records while at Moravian, three indoor and three outdoor,
as well as helping to lead the Greyhounds to the MAC Outdoor Championship
in 1989 and 1991. He was named Track & Field MVP and received
the Greyhound Award for Moravian Outstanding Male Athlete in 1991.
Hoch also participated in the Criminal Justice Club at Moravian.
He now works for the Lehigh County Juvenile Probation department
and lives in Allentown with his wife Jill, and their son Nicholas,

Hollawell, who graduated in 1994, played football
at Moravian and was a member of the defense that helped lead the
Greyhounds to a MAC Commonwealth League title in 1993. The team
also went on to play in the NCAA tournament. He was a four year
starter at Moravian from 1990 to 1993 and was the team’s MVP
in 1992 and 1993. Hollawell was All-MAC during those same years,
as well as Wilkes-Barre Touchdown Club MAC Defensive Player of the
Year. Also during his last season, Hollawell was named Eastern College
Athletic Conference Couth First Team All-Star and received a Champion
USA Division III Honorable Mention All-American. Hollawell went
to graduate school Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine
and currently works at the Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey. He
lives in Wall, NJ and has one daughter, Brooke, 2.
Rampone, a 1959 Moravian graduate, played football
for the Greyhounds from 1955 to 1958 and wrestled from 1957 to 1959.
He was a football Co-Captain in 1957 and Captain in 1958, and placed
second in the MAC Wrestling Championships at 185 lbs. Also while
at Moravian, Rampone was a member of the Omicron Gamma Omega fraternity,
Kappa Phi Kappa and the Triangle Honor Society. After leaving Moravian,
Rampone went on to Marywood College where he received his Masters
degree in Science. Rampone worked as an educator for over 35 years,
holding such posts as athletic director, head football coach, assistant
football coach, vice principal, and Board of Education President
and member at various New Jersey high schools. The beloved football
coach also was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 40 years,
a member of the Newton Recreation Committee for 20 years, and was
the Seeding Chairman of the SCIL district, NJSIAA Regional and NJSIAA
Super Regional wrestling tournaments for 25 years. Rampone spent
20 years as Treasurer of the Kiwanis Club, 31 one years total, and
was honored with the Kiwanis International Carrington Swain Fellowship
Award, the Legion of Honor, the Tablet of Honor, and the Kiwanis
Hixson Fellow Award. Rampone was also the recipient of the Good
Scouting Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 1999 and was inducted
into the Newton High School Hall of Fame in 2001. His Moravian College
accolades include the H.T.D. Gillespie Award in 1995, the Robert
Martin Herbstman Award in 1998, and the Medallion of Merit in 2000.
He was also a member of the Moravian Alumni Board, the Alumni Council
of the Blue Grey Club, and a four year chairman of Moravian Alumni
weekend. Rampone lived in Newton, NJ with his wife Jean and their
two daughters Michelle and Danielle. Rampone passed away in February
of 2001, but he continues to be honored and recognized for his great
contributions to his community.
Torba, a member of Moravian’s Class of
1994, was a four year participant for both the cross country and
basketball teams from 1990 to 1994. She led the cross country team
to the Regional team title, MAC team title and a third place finish
at the 1993 NCAA Division III National Championships. Torba also
helped the Greyhound basketball team to a second place finish in
the 1992 NCAA Division III National Championships and the MAC Championship
title in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Those same years, the team also qualified
for and played in the NCAA Division III tournament. Torba also played
a part in Moravian’s 1994 ECAC Tournament appearance. She
was the Lehigh Valley Player of the Year and won the Greyhound Award
as Moravian’s Outstanding Senior Female Athlete in 1994. She
set the school record for games played with 120, is the third all
time leading rebounder with 745 rebounds and had 925 career points.
Her other Moravian activities included the Sigma Theta Chi sorority
as a member, class officer and pledge master. Torba lives with her
husband Walt in Center Valley, PA and is employed by SunGard Pentamation
Inc.
Smith, of the class of 1996, played tennis at
Moravian from 1992 to 1995. She was a member of the finalist team
in the MAC doubles tournament in both 1994 and 1995 and placed second
both years. Smith was named to the MAC All-Academic team in 1993,
1994, and 1995 and was also the LVAIAW Player of the Year in 1995.
She was team captain and team MVP in 1994 and 1995, and received
the Blue & Grey Award as Moravian’s Outstanding Senior
Female Scholar Athlete in 1996. Smith went on to earn her Masters
degree and Doctorate in English from the University of Delaware,
as well as a Museum Studies certificate. While at the University
of Delaware, she taught various writing and literature classes for
both regular and honors sections, and some classes in the Women’s
Studies department. Currently, Smith is an Assistant Professor in
the University Writing Program at George Washington University.
She resides in Washington, DC and is engaged to Frank W. Stearns,
Jr.
The 1993 football posted an 8-3 overall record, won the MAC Commonwealth
League title and went onto the NCAA Division III Playoffs, falling
to Washington & Jefferson College in the first round.
